1 Vi era tra i farisei un uomo di nome Nicodèmo, uno dei capi dei Giudei.	1 Now there was a man among the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.
2 Costui andò da Gesù, di notte, e gli disse: «Rabbì, sappiamo che sei venuto da Dio come maestro; nessuno infatti può compiere questi segni che tu compi, se Dio non è con lui».	2 He went to Jesus at night, and he said to him: “Rabbi, we know that you have arrived as a teacher from God. For no one would be able to accomplish these signs, which you accomplish, unless God were with him.”
3 Gli rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità io ti dico, se uno non nasce dall’alto, non può vedere il regno di Dio».	3 Jesus responded and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one has been reborn anew, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”
4 Gli disse Nicodèmo: «Come può nascere un uomo quando è vecchio? Può forse entrare una seconda volta nel grembo di sua madre e rinascere?».	4 Nicodemus said to him: “How could a man be born when he is old? Surely, he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be reborn?”
5 Rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità io ti dico, se uno non nasce da acqua e Spirito, non può entrare nel regno di Dio.	5 Jesus responded: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one has been reborn by water and the Holy Spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God.
6 Quello che è nato dalla carne è carne, e quello che è nato dallo Spirito è spirito.	6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Non meravigliarti se ti ho detto: dovete nascere dall’alto.	7 You should not be amazed that I said to you: You must be born anew.
8 Il vento soffia dove vuole e ne senti la voce, ma non sai da dove viene né dove va: così è chiunque è nato dallo Spirito».	8 The Spirit inspires where he wills. And you hear his voice, but you do not know where he comes from, or where he is going. So it is with all who are born of the Spirit.”
9 Gli replicò Nicodèmo: «Come può accadere questo?».	9 Nicodemus responded and said to him, “How are these things able to be accomplished?”
10 Gli rispose Gesù: «Tu sei maestro d’Israele e non conosci queste cose?	10 Jesus responded and said to him: “You are a teacher in Israel, and you are ignorant of these things?
11 In verità, in verità io ti dico: noi parliamo di ciò che sappiamo e testimoniamo ciò che abbiamo veduto; ma voi non accogliete la nostra testimonianza.	11 Amen, amen, I say to you, that we speak about what we know, and we testify about what we have seen. But you do not accept our testimony.
12 Se vi ho parlato di cose della terra e non credete, come crederete se vi parlerò di cose del cielo?	12 If I have spoken to you about earthly things, and you have not believed, then how will you believe, if I will speak to you about heavenly things?
13 Nessuno è mai salito al cielo, se non colui che è disceso dal cielo, il Figlio dell’uomo.	13 And no one has ascended to heaven, except the one who descended from heaven: the Son of man who is in heaven.
14 E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che sia innalzato il Figlio dell’uomo,	14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so also must the Son of man be lifted up,
15 perché chiunque crede in lui abbia la vita eterna.	15 so that whoever believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life.
16 Dio infatti ha tanto amato il mondo da dare il Figlio unigenito, perché chiunque crede in lui non vada perduto, ma abbia la vita eterna.	16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that all who believe in him may not perish, but may have eternal life.
17 Dio, infatti, non ha mandato il Figlio nel mondo per condannare il mondo, ma perché il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui.	17 For God did not send his Son into the world, in order to judge the world, but in order that the world may be saved through him.
18 Chi crede in lui non è condannato; ma chi non crede è già stato condannato, perché non ha creduto nel nome dell’unigenito Figlio di Dio.	18 Whoever believes in him is not judged. But whoever does not believe is already judged, because he does not believe in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
19 E il giudizio è questo: la luce è venuta nel mondo, ma gli uomini hanno amato più le tenebre che la luce, perché le loro opere erano malvagie.	19 And this is the judgment: that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness more than light. For their works were evil.
20 Chiunque infatti fa il male, odia la luce, e non viene alla luce perché le sue opere non vengano riprovate.	20 For everyone who does evil hates the Light and does not go toward the Light, so that his works may not be corrected.
21 Invece chi fa la verità viene verso la luce, perché appaia chiaramente che le sue opere sono state fatte in Dio».	21 But whoever acts in truth goes toward the Light, so that his works may be manifested, because they have been accomplished in God.”
22 Dopo queste cose, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli nella regione della Giudea, e là si tratteneva con loro e battezzava.	22 After these things, Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea. And he was living there with them and baptizing.
23 Anche Giovanni battezzava a Ennòn, vicino a Salìm, perché là c’era molta acqua; e la gente andava a farsi battezzare.	23 Now John was also baptizing, at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water in that place. And they were arriving and being baptized.
24 Giovanni, infatti, non era ancora stato gettato in prigione.	24 For John had not yet been cast into prison.
25 Nacque allora una discussione tra i discepoli di Giovanni e un Giudeo riguardo alla purificazione rituale.	25 Then a dispute occurred between the disciples of John and the Jews, about purification.
26 Andarono da Giovanni e gli dissero: «Rabbì, colui che era con te dall’altra parte del Giordano e al quale hai dato testimonianza, ecco, sta battezzando e tutti accorrono a lui».	26 And they went to John and said to him: “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, about whom you offered testimony: behold, he is baptizing and everyone is going to him.”
27 Giovanni rispose: «Nessuno può prendersi qualcosa se non gli è stata data dal cielo.	27 John responded and said: “A man is not able to receive anything, unless it has been given to him from heaven.
28 Voi stessi mi siete testimoni che io ho detto: “Non sono io il Cristo”, ma: “Sono stato mandato avanti a lui”.	28 You yourselves offer testimony for me that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but that I have been sent before him.
29 Lo sposo è colui al quale appartiene la sposa; ma l’amico dello sposo, che è presente e l’ascolta, esulta di gioia alla voce dello sposo. Ora questa mia gioia è piena.	29 He who holds the bride is the groom. But the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to Him, rejoices joyfully at the voice of the groom. And so, this, my joy, has been fulfilled.
30 Lui deve crescere; io, invece, diminuire».	30 He must increase, while I must decrease.
31 Chi viene dall’alto è al di sopra di tutti; ma chi viene dalla terra, appartiene alla terra e parla secondo la terra. Chi viene dal cielo è al di sopra di tutti.	31 He who comes from above, is above everything. He who is from below, is of the earth, and he speaks about the earth. He who comes from heaven is above everything.
32 Egli attesta ciò che ha visto e udito, eppure nessuno accetta la sua testimonianza.	32 And what he has seen and heard, about this he testifies. And no one accepts his testimony.
33 Chi ne accetta la testimonianza, conferma che Dio è veritiero.	33 Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified that God is truthful.
34 Colui infatti che Dio ha mandato dice le parole di Dio: senza misura egli dà lo Spirito.	34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God. For God does not give the Spirit by measure.
35 Il Padre ama il Figlio e gli ha dato in mano ogni cosa.	35 The Father loves the Son, and he has given everything into his hand.
36 Chi crede nel Figlio ha la vita eterna; chi non obbedisce al Figlio non vedrà la vita, ma l’ira di Dio rimane su di lui.	36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. But whoever is unbelieving toward the Son shall not see life; instead the wrath of God remains upon him.”
