1 Vi era tra i farisei un uomo di nome Nicodèmo, uno dei capi dei Giudei.	1 There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,
2 Costui andò da Gesù, di notte, e gli disse: «Rabbì, sappiamo che sei venuto da Dio come maestro; nessuno infatti può compiere questi segni che tu compi, se Dio non è con lui».	2 who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; forno one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'
3 Gli rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità io ti dico, se uno non nasce dall’alto, non può vedere il regno di Dio».	3 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born fromabove.
4 Gli disse Nicodèmo: «Come può nascere un uomo quando è vecchio? Può forse entrare una seconda volta nel grembo di sua madre e rinascere?».	4 Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the wombagain and be born?'
5 Rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità io ti dico, se uno non nasce da acqua e Spirito, non può entrare nel regno di Dio.	5 Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born throughwater and the Spirit;
6 Quello che è nato dalla carne è carne, e quello che è nato dallo Spirito è spirito.	6 what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Non meravigliarti se ti ho detto: dovete nascere dall’alto.	7 Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.
8 Il vento soffia dove vuole e ne senti la voce, ma non sai da dove viene né dove va: così è chiunque è nato dallo Spirito».	8 The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from orwhere it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
9 Gli replicò Nicodèmo: «Come può accadere questo?».	9 'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.
10 Gli rispose Gesù: «Tu sei maestro d’Israele e non conosci queste cose?	10 Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!
11 In verità, in verità io ti dico: noi parliamo di ciò che sappiamo e testimoniamo ciò che abbiamo veduto; ma voi non accogliete la nostra testimonianza.	11 'In al truth I tel you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.
12 Se vi ho parlato di cose della terra e non credete, come crederete se vi parlerò di cose del cielo?	12 If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how wil you believe me when Ispeak to you about heavenly things?
13 Nessuno è mai salito al cielo, se non colui che è disceso dal cielo, il Figlio dell’uomo.	13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;
14 E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che sia innalzato il Figlio dell’uomo,	14 as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up
15 perché chiunque crede in lui abbia la vita eterna.	15 so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
16 Dio infatti ha tanto amato il mondo da dare il Figlio unigenito, perché chiunque crede in lui non vada perduto, ma abbia la vita eterna.	16 For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him maynot perish but may have eternal life.
17 Dio, infatti, non ha mandato il Figlio nel mondo per condannare il mondo, ma perché il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui.	17 For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might besaved.
18 Chi crede in lui non è condannato; ma chi non crede è già stato condannato, perché non ha creduto nel nome dell’unigenito Figlio di Dio.	18 No one who believes in him wil be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, becausethat person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.
19 E il giudizio è questo: la luce è venuta nel mondo, ma gli uomini hanno amato più le tenebre che la luce, perché le loro opere erano malvagie.	19 And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness tothe light because their deeds were evil.
20 Chiunque infatti fa il male, odia la luce, e non viene alla luce perché le sue opere non vengano riprovate.	20 And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from beingshown up;
21 Invece chi fa la verità viene verso la luce, perché appaia chiaramente che le sue opere sono state fatte in Dio».	21 but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear asdone in God.'
22 Dopo queste cose, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli nella regione della Giudea, e là si tratteneva con loro e battezzava.	22 After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there andbaptised.
23 Anche Giovanni battezzava a Ennòn, vicino a Salìm, perché là c’era molta acqua; e la gente andava a farsi battezzare.	23 John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were goingthere and were being baptised.
24 Giovanni, infatti, non era ancora stato gettato in prigione.	24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
25 Nacque allora una discussione tra i discepoli di Giovanni e un Giudeo riguardo alla purificazione rituale.	25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,
26 Andarono da Giovanni e gli dissero: «Rabbì, colui che era con te dall’altra parte del Giordano e al quale hai dato testimonianza, ecco, sta battezzando e tutti accorrono a lui».	26 so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, theman to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'
27 Giovanni rispose: «Nessuno può prendersi qualcosa se non gli è stata data dal cielo.	27 John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.
28 Voi stessi mi siete testimoni che io ho detto: “Non sono io il Cristo”, ma: “Sono stato mandato avanti a lui”.	28 'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go infront of him."
29 Lo sposo è colui al quale appartiene la sposa; ma l’amico dello sposo, che è presente e l’ascolta, esulta di gioia alla voce dello sposo. Ora questa mia gioia è piena.	29 'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listensto him, is fil ed with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.
30 Lui deve crescere; io, invece, diminuire».	30 He must grow greater, I must grow less.
31 Chi viene dall’alto è al di sopra di tutti; ma chi viene dalla terra, appartiene alla terra e parla secondo la terra. Chi viene dal cielo è al di sopra di tutti.	31 He who comes from above is above al others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks inan earthly way. He who comes from heaven
32 Egli attesta ciò che ha visto e udito, eppure nessuno accetta la sua testimonianza.	32 bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;
33 Chi ne accetta la testimonianza, conferma che Dio è veritiero.	33 though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,
34 Colui infatti che Dio ha mandato dice le parole di Dio: senza misura egli dà lo Spirito.	34 since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.
35 Il Padre ama il Figlio e gli ha dato in mano ogni cosa.	35 The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.
36 Chi crede nel Figlio ha la vita eterna; chi non obbedisce al Figlio non vedrà la vita, ma l’ira di Dio rimane su di lui.	36 Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son willnever see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'
