1 Anch’io sono un uomo mortale uguale a tutti, discendente del primo uomo plasmato con la terra. La mia carne fu modellata nel grembo di mia madre,	1 I too am mortal like everyone else, a descendant of the first man formed from the earth. I was model edin flesh inside a mother's womb,
2 nello spazio di dieci mesi ho preso consistenza nel sangue, dal seme d’un uomo e dal piacere compagno del sonno.	2 where, for ten months, in blood I acquired substance -- the result of virile seed and pleasure, sleep'scompanion.
3 Anch’io alla nascita ho respirato l’aria comune e sono caduto sulla terra dove tutti soffrono allo stesso modo; come per tutti, il pianto fu la mia prima voce.	3 I too, when I was born, drew in the common air, I fel on the same ground that bears us al , and cryingwas the first sound I made, like everyone else.
4 Fui allevato in fasce e circondato di cure;	4 I was nurtured in swaddling clothes, with every care.
5 nessun re ebbe un inizio di vita diverso.	5 No king has known any other beginning of existence;
6 Una sola è l’entrata di tutti nella vita e uguale ne è l’uscita.	6 for there is only one way into life, and one way out of it.
7 Per questo pregai e mi fu elargita la prudenza, implorai e venne in me lo spirito di sapienza.	7 And so I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
8 La preferii a scettri e a troni, stimai un nulla la ricchezza al suo confronto,	8 I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
9 non la paragonai neppure a una gemma inestimabile, perché tutto l’oro al suo confronto è come un po’ di sabbia e come fango sarà valutato di fronte a lei l’argento.	9 I reckoned no precious stone to be her equal, for compared with her, al gold is a pinch of sand, andbeside her, silver ranks as mud.
10 L’ho amata più della salute e della bellezza, ho preferito avere lei piuttosto che la luce, perché lo splendore che viene da lei non tramonta.	10 I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps.
11 Insieme a lei mi sono venuti tutti i beni; nelle sue mani è una ricchezza incalcolabile.	11 In her company al good things came to me, and at her hands incalculable wealth.
12 Ho gioito di tutto ciò, perché lo reca la sapienza, ma ignoravo che ella è madre di tutto questo.	12 All these delighted me, since Wisdom brings them, though I did not then realise that she was theirmother.
13 Ciò che senza astuzia ho imparato, senza invidia lo comunico, non nascondo le sue ricchezze.	13 What I learned diligently, I shal pass on liberally, I shal not conceal how rich she is.
14 Ella è infatti un tesoro inesauribile per gli uomini; chi lo possiede ottiene l’amicizia con Dio, è a lui raccomandato dai frutti della sua educazione.	14 For she is to human beings an inexhaustible treasure, and those who acquire this win God'sfriendship, commended to him by the gifts of instruction.
15 Mi conceda Dio di parlare con intelligenza e di riflettere in modo degno dei doni ricevuti, perché egli stesso è la guida della sapienza e dirige i sapienti.	15 May God grant me to speak as he would wish and conceive thoughts worthy of the gifts I havereceived, since he is both guide to Wisdom and director of sages;
16 Nelle sue mani siamo noi e le nostre parole, ogni sorta di conoscenza e ogni capacità operativa.	16 for we are in his hand, yes, ourselves and our sayings, and al intellectual and al practical knowledge.
17 Egli stesso mi ha concesso la conoscenza autentica delle cose, per comprendere la struttura del mondo e la forza dei suoi elementi,	17 He it was who gave me sure knowledge of what exists, to understand the structure of the world andthe action of the elements,
18 il principio, la fine e il mezzo dei tempi, l’alternarsi dei solstizi e il susseguirsi delle stagioni,	18 the beginning, end and middle of the times, the alternation of the solstices and the succession of theseasons,
19 i cicli dell’anno e la posizione degli astri,	19 the cycles of the year and the position of the stars,
20 la natura degli animali e l’istinto delle bestie selvatiche, la forza dei venti e i ragionamenti degli uomini, la varietà delle piante e le proprietà delle radici.	20 the natures of animals and the instincts of wild beasts, the powers of spirits and human mentalprocesses, the varieties of plants and the medical properties of roots.
21 Ho conosciuto tutte le cose nascoste e quelle manifeste, perché mi ha istruito la sapienza, artefice di tutte le cose.	21 And now I understand everything, hidden or visible, for Wisdom, the designer of all things, hasinstructed me.
22 In lei c’è uno spirito intelligente, santo, unico, molteplice, sottile, agile, penetrante, senza macchia, schietto, inoffensivo, amante del bene, pronto,	22 For within her is a spirit intel igent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, incisive, unsul ied, lucid,invulnerable, benevolent, shrewd,
23 libero, benefico, amico dell’uomo, stabile, sicuro, tranquillo, che può tutto e tutto controlla, che penetra attraverso tutti gli spiriti intelligenti, puri, anche i più sottili.	23 irresistible, beneficent, friendly to human beings, steadfast, dependable, unperturbed, almighty, al -surveying, penetrating al intel igent, pure and most subtle spirits.
24 La sapienza è più veloce di qualsiasi movimento, per la sua purezza si diffonde e penetra in ogni cosa.	24 For Wisdom is quicker to move than any motion; she is so pure, she pervades and permeates allthings.
25 È effluvio della potenza di Dio, emanazione genuina della gloria dell’Onnipotente; per questo nulla di contaminato penetra in essa.	25 She is a breath of the power of God, pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; so nothing impurecan find its way into her.
26 È riflesso della luce perenne, uno specchio senza macchia dell’attività di Dio e immagine della sua bontà.	26 For she is a reflection of the eternal light, untarnished mirror of God's active power, and image of hisgoodness.
27 Sebbene unica, può tutto; pur rimanendo in se stessa, tutto rinnova e attraverso i secoli, passando nelle anime sante, prepara amici di Dio e profeti.	27 Although she is alone, she can do everything; herself unchanging, she renews the world, and,generation after generation, passing into holy souls, she makes them into God's friends and prophets;
28 Dio infatti non ama se non chi vive con la sapienza.	28 for God loves only those who dwel with Wisdom.
29 Ella in realtà è più radiosa del sole e supera ogni costellazione, paragonata alla luce risulta più luminosa;	29 She is indeed more splendid than the sun, she outshines al the constel ations; compared with light,she takes first place,
30 a questa, infatti, succede la notte, ma la malvagità non prevale sulla sapienza.	30 for light must yield to night, but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail.
