1 Al suo posto sorse il figlio di lui, Giuda, chiamato Maccabeo;	1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
2 lo aiutavano tutti i suoi fratelli e quanti si erano legati al padre e conducevano la battaglia d’Israele con entusiasmo.	2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.
3 Egli accrebbe la gloria del suo popolo, rivestì la corazza come gigante, cinse l’armatura di guerra e sostenne battaglie, difendendo il campo con la spada.	3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
4 Nelle sue gesta fu simile a leone, come leoncello ruggente sulla preda.	4 In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.
5 Inseguì gli iniqui braccandoli, i perturbatori del popolo distrusse con il fuoco.	5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.
6 Gli iniqui sbigottirono per paura di lui, tutti i malfattori furono confusi e la salvezza per mezzo di lui ebbe buon esito.	6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.
7 Inflisse amarezze a molti re, rallegrò con le sue gesta Giacobbe; sempre la sua memoria sarà benedetta.	7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.
8 Percorse le città di Giuda e vi sterminò i rinnegati e distolse l’ira da Israele.	8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
9 Divenne celebre fino all’estremità della terra e radunò coloro che erano dispersi.	9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
10 Apollònio radunò dei pagani e un forte esercito dalla Samaria per combattere Israele.	10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.
11 Giuda lo seppe e avanzò contro di lui, lo sconfisse e lo uccise; molti caddero colpiti a morte e i superstiti fuggirono.	11 Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.
12 Così s’impadronirono delle loro spoglie e Giuda si riservò la spada di Apollònio e l’adoperò in guerra per tutto il tempo della sua vita.	12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.
13 Quando Seron, comandante delle forze di Siria, seppe che Giuda aveva radunato un contingente e c’era con lui uno stuolo di fedeli e uomini preparati alla guerra,	13 Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
14 disse: «Mi farò un nome e mi coprirò di gloria nel regno, combattendo Giuda e i suoi uomini che hanno disprezzato gli ordini del re».	14 He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.
15 Fece i preparativi e si unì a lui un forte gruppo di rinnegati per aiutarlo a vendicarsi dei figli d’Israele.	15 So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.
16 Si spinse fino alla salita di Bet-Oron e Giuda gli andò incontro con una piccola schiera.	16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:
17 Ma quando videro lo schieramento avanzare contro di loro, dissero a Giuda: «Come faremo noi così pochi ad attaccare battaglia contro una moltitudine così forte? Oltre tutto, siamo rimasti oggi senza mangiare».	17 Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?
18 Giuda rispose: «Non è impossibile che molti cadano in mano a pochi e non c’è differenza per il Cielo tra salvare per mezzo di molti e salvare per mezzo di pochi;	18 Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:
19 perché la vittoria in guerra non dipende dalla moltitudine delle forze, ma è dal Cielo che viene la forza.	19 For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.
20 Costoro vengono contro di noi pieni d’insolenza e d’iniquità per eliminare noi, le nostre mogli e i nostri figli e saccheggiarci;	20 They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:
21 noi combattiamo per la nostra vita e le nostre leggi.	21 But we fight for our lives and our laws.
22 Sarà lui a stritolarli davanti a noi. Voi dunque non temeteli».	22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
23 Quando ebbe finito di parlare, piombò su di loro all’improvviso e Seron con il suo schieramento fu sgominato davanti a lui.	23 Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.
24 Lo inseguirono nella discesa di Bet-Oron fino alla pianura: caddero tra loro circa ottocento uomini, gli altri fuggirono nel territorio dei Filistei.	24 And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
25 Così cominciò a diffondersi il timore di Giuda e dei suoi fratelli e le genti intorno furono prese da terrore.	25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:
26 La fama di lui giunse fino al re, e delle sue imprese militari parlavano le genti.	26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.
27 Quando il re Antioco seppe queste cose, si adirò furiosamente e diede ordine di radunare tutte le forze militari del suo regno, un esercito molto potente.	27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.
28 Aprì il suo tesoro e diede alle truppe il soldo per un anno, ordinando loro di stare pronti per ogni evenienza.	28 He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.
29 Ma si accorse che non bastavano le riserve delle sue casse e che le entrate del paese erano poche, a causa delle rivolte e delle rovine che aveva provocato nella regione, per estirpare le tradizioni che erano in vigore dai tempi antichi;	29 Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;
30 temette di non avere, come altre volte in passato, le risorse per le spese e i doni, che faceva con mano prodiga, superando i re precedenti.	30 He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.
31 Ne fu grandemente angustiato e prese la decisione di invadere la Persia, per riscuotere i tributi di quelle province e ammassare molto denaro.	31 Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.
32 Lasciò Lisia, uomo illustre e di stirpe regale, alla direzione degli affari del re, dall’Eufrate fino ai confini dell’Egitto,	32 So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:
33 e con l’incarico di curare l’educazione del figlio Antioco fino al suo ritorno.	33 And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.
34 A lui affidò metà dell’esercito e gli elefanti e gli diede istruzioni per tutte le cose che voleva fossero eseguite; riguardo agli abitanti della Giudea e di Gerusalemme	34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:
35 gli ordinò di mandare contro di loro milizie, per distruggere ed eliminare le forze d’Israele e quanto restava a Gerusalemme e cancellare il loro ricordo dalla regione,	35 To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;
36 di trasferire stranieri su tutti i loro monti e di distribuire le loro terre.	36 And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.
37 Il re poi prese l’altra metà dell’esercito e partì da Antiòchia, la capitale del suo regno, nell’anno centoquarantasette; passò l’Eufrate e percorse le regioni settentrionali.	37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.
38 Allora Lisia scelse Tolomeo, figlio di Dorimene, Nicànore e Gorgia, uomini potenti tra gli amici del re,	38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:
39 e spedì ai loro ordini quarantamila fanti e settemila cavalieri nella terra di Giuda, per devastarla secondo il comando del re.	39 And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.
40 Questi partirono con tutte le truppe e andarono ad accamparsi vicino a Èmmaus, nella pianura.	40 So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.
41 I mercanti della regione ne ebbero notizia e si rifornirono in abbondanza d’oro e d’argento e di catene e vennero presso l’accampamento per acquistare come schiavi gli Israeliti. A loro si aggiunsero forze della Siria e del territorio dei Filistei.	41 And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.
42 Giuda e i suoi fratelli videro che i mali si erano aggravati e che l’esercito era accampato nel loro territorio; vennero a conoscere quanto il re aveva ordinato di fare per la rovina e l’annientamento del loro popolo.	42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;
43 Allora si dissero l’un l’altro: «Facciamo risorgere il popolo dalla sua rovina e combattiamo per il nostro popolo e per il luogo santo».	43 They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.
44 Si radunò l’assemblea per prepararsi alla battaglia e per pregare e chiedere pietà e misericordia.	44 Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.
45 Gerusalemme era disabitata come un deserto, nessuno dei suoi figli vi entrava o ne usciva, il santuario era calpestato, gli stranieri erano nella Cittadella, soggiorno dei pagani. La gioia era sparita da Giacobbe, erano scomparsi il flauto e la cetra.	45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.
46 Si radunarono dunque e vennero a Masfa di fronte a Gerusalemme, perché nei tempi antichi a Masfa c’era un luogo di preghiera in Israele.	46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.
47 In quel giorno digiunarono e si vestirono di sacco, si cosparsero di cenere il capo e si stracciarono le vesti.	47 Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,
48 Aprirono il libro della legge per scoprirvi quanto i pagani cercavano di sapere dagli idoli dei loro dèi.	48 And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.
49 Portarono le vesti sacerdotali, le primizie e le decime e fecero venire avanti i nazirei, che avevano terminato i giorni del loro voto,	49 They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.
50 e alzarono la voce al Cielo gridando: «Che cosa faremo di costoro e dove li condurremo,	50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?
51 mentre il tuo santuario è calpestato e profanato e i tuoi sacerdoti sono in lutto e desolazione?	51 For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.
52 Ecco, i pagani si sono alleati contro di noi per distruggerci; tu sai quello che vanno macchinando contro di noi.	52 And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
53 Come potremo resistere di fronte a loro, se tu non ci aiuterai?».	53 How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
54 Diedero fiato alle trombe e gridarono a gran voce.	54 Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
55 Dopo questo, Giuda stabilì i condottieri del popolo, i comandanti di mille, di cento, di cinquanta e di dieci uomini.	55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.
56 A coloro che costruivano case o che stavano per prendere moglie, a quelli che piantavano la vigna o che erano paurosi disse di tornare a casa loro, secondo la legge.	56 But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
57 Poi levò il campo e si disposero a mezzogiorno di Èmmaus.	57 So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.
58 Giuda ordinò: «Cingetevi e siate forti e state preparati per l’alba di domani a dar battaglia a questi pagani, che si sono alleati per distruggere noi e il nostro santuario.	58 And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:
59 Del resto è meglio per noi morire in battaglia, che vedere la rovina della nostra gente e del santuario.	59 For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.
60 Però, qualunque sia la volontà del Cielo, così accadrà».	60 Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
