1 In quei giorni Mattatia, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Simone, sacerdote della stirpe di Ioarìb, partì da Gerusalemme e venne a stabilirsi a Modin.	1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.
2 Egli aveva cinque figli: Giovanni chiamato anche Gaddì,	2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,
3 Simone chiamato Tassì,	3 Simon cal ed Thassi,
4 Giuda chiamato Maccabeo,	4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,
5 Eleàzaro chiamato Auaràn, Giònata chiamato Affus.	5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.
6 Viste le azioni sacrileghe che si commettevano in Giuda e a Gerusalemme,	6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,
7 disse: «Ohimè! Perché mai sono nato per vedere lo strazio del mio popolo e lo strazio della città santa e debbo starmene qui mentre essa è in balìa dei nemici e il santuario è in mano agli stranieri?	7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.
8 Il suo tempio è diventato come un uomo ignobile,	8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,
9 gli arredi della sua gloria sono stati portati via come preda, sono stati trucidati i suoi bambini nelle piazze e i fanciulli dalla spada nemica.	9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.

11 Ogni ornamento le è stato strappato, da padrona è diventata schiava.	11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.
12 Ecco, le nostre cose sante, la nostra bellezza, la nostra gloria sono state devastate, le hanno profanate le nazioni.	12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!
13 Perché vivere ancora?».	13 What have we left to live for?'
14 Mattatia e i suoi figli si stracciarono le vesti, si vestirono di sacco e fecero grande lutto.	14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.
15 Ora i messaggeri del re, incaricati di costringere all’apostasia, vennero nella città di Modin per indurre a offrire sacrifici.	15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.
16 Molti Israeliti andarono con loro; invece Mattatia e i suoi figli si raccolsero in disparte.	16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.
17 I messaggeri del re si rivolsero a Mattatia e gli dissero: «Tu sei uomo autorevole, stimato e grande in questa città e sei sostenuto da figli e fratelli.	17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.
18 Su, fatti avanti per primo e adempi il comando del re, come hanno fatto tutti i popoli e gli uomini di Giuda e quelli rimasti a Gerusalemme; così tu e i tuoi figli passerete nel numero degli amici del re e tu e i tuoi figli avrete in premio oro e argento e doni in quantità».	18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'
19 Ma Mattatia rispose a gran voce: «Anche se tutti i popoli che sono sotto il dominio del re lo ascoltassero e ognuno abbandonasse la religione dei propri padri e volessero tutti aderire alle sue richieste,	19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,
20 io, i miei figli e i miei fratelli cammineremo nell’alleanza dei nostri padri.	20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.
21 Non sia mai che abbandoniamo la legge e le tradizioni.	21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.
22 Non ascolteremo gli ordini del re per deviare dalla nostra religione a destra o a sinistra».	22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'
23 Quando ebbe finito di pronunciare queste parole, si avvicinò un Giudeo alla vista di tutti per sacrificare sull’altare di Modin secondo il decreto del re.	23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.
24 Ciò vedendo, Mattatia arse di zelo; fremettero le sue viscere e fu preso da una giusta collera. Fattosi avanti di corsa, lo uccise sull’altare;	24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.
25 uccise nel medesimo tempo il messaggero del re, che costringeva a sacrificare, e distrusse l’altare.	25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.
26 Egli agiva per zelo verso la legge, come aveva fatto Fineès con Zambrì, figlio di Salom.	26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.
27 La voce di Mattatia tuonò nella città: «Chiunque ha zelo per la legge e vuole difendere l’alleanza mi segua!».	27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'
28 Fuggì con i suoi figli tra i monti, abbandonando in città quanto possedevano.	28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.
29 Allora molti che ricercavano la giustizia e il diritto scesero nel deserto, per stabilirvisi	29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,
30 con i loro figli, le loro mogli e il bestiame, perché si erano inaspriti i mali sopra di loro.	30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.
31 Fu riferito agli uomini del re e alle milizie che stavano a Gerusalemme, nella Città di Davide, che laggiù, in luoghi nascosti del deserto, si erano raccolti uomini che avevano infranto l’editto del re.	31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.
32 Molti corsero a inseguirli, li raggiunsero, si accamparono di fronte a loro e si prepararono a dare battaglia in giorno di sabato.	32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,
33 Dicevano loro: «Ora basta! Uscite, obbedite ai comandi del re e avrete salva la vita».	33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'
34 Ma quelli risposero: «Non usciremo, né seguiremo gli ordini del re, profanando il giorno del sabato».	34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'
35 Quelli si precipitarono all’assalto contro di loro.	35 The royal forces at once went into action,
36 Ma essi non risposero loro, né lanciarono pietre, né ostruirono i nascondigli,	36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.
37 dichiarando: «Moriamo tutti nella nostra innocenza. Ci sono testimoni il cielo e la terra che ci fate morire ingiustamente».	37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'
38 Così quelli si lanciarono contro di loro in battaglia di sabato, ed essi morirono con le mogli e i figli e il loro bestiame, in numero di circa mille persone.	38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.
39 Quando Mattatia e i suoi amici lo seppero, ne fecero grande pianto.	39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly
40 Poi dissero tra loro: «Se faremo tutti come hanno fatto i nostri fratelli e non combatteremo contro i pagani per la nostra vita e per le nostre leggi, in breve ci faranno sparire dalla terra».	40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'
41 Presero in quel giorno stesso questa decisione: «Combatteremo contro chiunque venga a darci battaglia in giorno di sabato e non moriremo tutti come sono morti i nostri fratelli nei nascondigli».	41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'
42 Allora si unì a loro il gruppo degli Asidei, uomini di grande valore in Israele, tutti impegnati a difendere la legge;	42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.
43 inoltre quanti fuggivano davanti alle sventure si univano a loro e divenivano loro rinforzo.	43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.
44 Così organizzarono un contingente di forze e percossero con ira i peccatori e gli uomini perversi con furore; i restanti fuggirono tra i pagani per salvarsi.	44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.
45 Mattatia, poi, e i suoi amici andarono in giro a demolire gli altari	45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars
46 e fecero circoncidere a forza tutti i bambini non circoncisi che trovarono nel territorio d’Israele.	46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.
47 Non diedero tregua ai superbi e l’impresa ebbe buona riuscita nelle loro mani;	47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.
48 difesero la legge dalla prepotenza dei popoli e dei re e non la diedero vinta ai peccatori.	48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.
49 Intanto si avvicinava per Mattatia l’ora della morte ed egli disse ai figli: «Ora dominano superbia e ingiustizia, è il tempo della distruzione e dell’ira rabbiosa.	49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.
50 Ora, figli, mostrate zelo per la legge e date la vostra vita per l’alleanza dei nostri padri.	50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.
51 Ricordate le gesta compiute dai padri ai loro tempi e traetene gloria insigne e nome eterno.	51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.
52 Abramo non fu trovato forse fedele nella tentazione e ciò non gli fu accreditato a giustizia?	52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?
53 Giuseppe nell’ora dell’oppressione osservò il precetto e divenne signore dell’Egitto.	53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.
54 Fineès, nostro padre, per lo zelo dimostrato conseguì l’alleanza del sacerdozio perenne.	54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.
55 Giosuè, obbedendo alla divina parola, divenne giudice in Israele.	55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.
56 Caleb, testimoniando nell’assemblea, ebbe in sorte parte del nostro paese.	56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.
57 Davide per la sua pietà ottenne il trono del regno per sempre.	57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.
58 Elia, poiché aveva dimostrato zelo ardente per la legge, fu assunto in cielo.	58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.
59 Anania, Azaria e Misaele per la loro fede furono salvati dalla fiamma.	59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.
60 Daniele nella sua innocenza fu sottratto alle fauci dei leoni.	60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.
61 Così, di seguito, considerate di generazione in generazione: quanti hanno fiducia in lui non soccombono.	61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.
62 Non abbiate paura delle parole del perverso, perché la sua gloria andrà a finire ai rifiuti e ai vermi;	62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.
63 oggi è esaltato, domani non si trova più, perché ritorna alla polvere e i suoi progetti falliscono.	63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.
64 Figli, siate valorosi e forti nella legge, perché in essa sarete glorificati.	64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.
65 Ecco qui vostro fratello Simone; io so che è un uomo saggio: ascoltatelo sempre, egli sarà vostro padre.	65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.
66 Giuda Maccabeo, forte guerriero dalla sua gioventù, sarà capo del vostro esercito e condurrà la battaglia contro i popoli.	66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.
67 Radunate, dunque, intorno a voi quanti praticano la legge e vendicate il vostro popolo;	67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.
68 rendete il meritato castigo ai pagani e attenetevi all’ordinamento della legge».	68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'
69 Poi li benedisse e si riunì ai suoi padri.	69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.
70 Morì nell’anno centoquarantasei e fu sepolto nella tomba dei suoi padri a Modin; tutto Israele fece grande pianto su di lui.	70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.
