1 Ti hanno fatto capotavola? Non esaltarti; comportati con gli altri come uno di loro. Pensa a loro e poi mettiti a tavola;	1 Have they made you the presider? Do not let it go to your head, behave like everyone else in the party,see that they are happy and then sit down yourself.
2 quando avrai assolto il tuo compito, accòmodati per ricrearti con loro e ricevere la corona per la tua cortesia.	2 Having discharged your duties, take your place so that your joy may be through theirs, and you mayreceive the crown for your competence.
3 Parla, o anziano, ciò ti s'addice, ma con discrezione e non disturbare la musica.	3 Speak, old man -- it is proper that you should -- but with discretion: do not spoil the music.
4 Quando ascolti non effonderti in chiacchiere, non fare fuori luogo il sapiente.	4 If someone is singing, do not ramble on and do not play the sage at the wrong moment.
5 Sigillo di rubino in un anello d'oro è un concerto musicale in un banchetto.	5 An amber seal on a precious stone, such is a concert of music at a wine feast.
6 Sigillo di smeraldo in una guarnizione d'oro è la melodia dei canti unita alla dolcezza del vino.	6 An emerald seal in a golden setting, such are strains of music with a vintage wine.
7 Parla, giovinetto, se è necessario, ma appena un paio di volte, se interrogato.	7 Speak, young man, when you must, but twice at most, and then only if questioned.
8 Compendia il tuo discorso, molte cose in poche parole; compòrtati come uno che sa ma che tace.	8 Keep to the point, say much in few words; give the impression of knowing but not wanting to speak.
9 Fra i grandi non crederti loro uguale, se un altro parla, non ciarlare troppo.	9 Among eminent people do not behave as though you were their equal; do not make frivolous remarkswhen someone else is speaking.
10 Prima del tuono viene la folgore, la grazia precede l'uomo modesto.	10 Lightning comes before the thunder, favour goes ahead of a modest person.
11 All'ora stabilita àlzati e non restare per ultimo, corri a casa e non indugiare.	11 Leave in good time, do not bring up the rear, and hurry home without loitering.
12 Là divèrtiti e fa' quello che desideri, ma non peccare con un discorso arrogante.	12 There amuse yourself, and do what you have a mind to, but do not sin by arrogant talk.
13 Per tutto ciò benedici chi ti ha creato, chi ti colma dei suoi benefici.	13 And for all this bless your Creator, who intoxicates you with his favours.
14 Chi teme il Signore accetterà la correzione, coloro che lo ricercano troveranno il suo favore.	14 Whoever fears the Lord wil accept his correction; those who look for him wil win his favour.
15 Chi indaga la legge ne sarà appagato, ma l'ipocrita vi troverà motivo di scandalo.	15 Whoever seeks the Law wil be nourished by it, the hypocrite will find it a stumbling-block.
16 Quanti temono il Signore troveranno la giustizia, le loro virtù brilleranno come luci.	16 Those who fear the Lord win his approval, their good deeds shining like a light.
17 Un uomo peccatore schiva il rimprovero, trova scuse secondo i suoi capricci.	17 The sinner waves reproof aside, he finds an excuse for headstrong behaviour.
18 Un uomo assennato non trascura l'avvertimento, quello empio e superbo non prova alcun timore.	18 A sensible person never scorns a warning; foreigners and the proud do not know about fear.
19 Non far nulla senza riflessione, alla fine dell'azione non te ne pentirai.	19 Never act without reflection, and you wil not regret your actions.
20 Non camminare in una via piena d'ostacoli, per non inciampare contro i sassi.	20 Do not venture on a rough road, for fear of stumbling over the stones.
21 Non fidarti di una via senza inciampi,	21 Do not be over-confident on an even road
22 e guàrdati anche dai tuoi figli.	22 and beware of your own children.
23 In ogni azione abbi fiducia in te stesso, poiché anche questo è osservare i comandamenti.	23 Watch yourself in everything you do; this is also the way to keep the commandments.
24 Chi crede alla legge è attento ai comandamenti, chi confida nel Signore non resterà deluso.	24 Anyone who trusts in the Law obeys its precepts, no one who has confidence in the Lord wil come toharm.
