1 Per amor del denaro molti peccano, chi cerca di arricchire procede senza scrupoli.	1 Many have sinned for the sake of profit, one who hopes to be rich must turn a blind eye.
2 Fra le giunture delle pietre si conficca un piuolo, tra la compra e la vendita si insinua il peccato.	2 A peg wil stick in the joint between two stones, and sin wil wedge itself between sel ing and buying.
3 Se uno non si aggrappa in fretta al timor del Signore, la sua casa andrà presto in rovina.	3 Whoever does not firmly hold to the fear of the Lord, his house wil soon be overthrown.
4 Quando si agita un vaglio, restano i rifiuti; così quando un uomo riflette, gli appaiono i suoi difetti.	4 In a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind, so too the defects of a person appear in speech.
5 La fornace prova gli oggetti del vasaio, la prova dell'uomo si ha nella sua conversazione.	5 The kiln tests the work of the potter, the test of a person is in conversation.
6 Il frutto dimostra come è coltivato l'albero, così la parola rivela il sentimento dell'uomo.	6 The orchard where the tree grows is judged by its fruit, similarly words betray what a person feels.
7 Non lodare un uomo prima che abbia parlato, poiché questa è la prova degli uomini.	7 Do not praise anyone who has not yet spoken, since this is where people are tested.
8 Se cerchi la giustizia, la raggiungerai e te ne rivestirai come di un manto di gloria.	8 If you pursue virtue, you will attain it and put it on like a festal gown.
9 Gli uccelli sostano presso i loro simili, la lealtà ritorna a quelli che la praticano.	9 Birds consort with their kind, truth comes home to those who practise it.
10 Il leone sta in agguato della preda, così il peccato di coloro che praticano l'ingiustizia.	10 The lion lies in wait for its prey, so does sin for those who do wrong.
11 Nel discorso del pio c'è sempre saggezza, lo stolto muta come la luna.	11 The conversation of the devout is wisdom at all times, but the fool is as changeable as the moon.
12 Tra gli insensati bada al tempo, tra i saggi fèrmati a lungo.	12 When visiting stupid people, choose the right moment, but among the thoughtful take your time.
13 Il discorso degli stolti è un orrore, il loro riso fra i bagordi del peccato.	13 The conversation of fools is disgusting, raucous their laughter in their sinful pleasures.
14 Il linguaggio di chi giura spesso fa rizzare i capelli, e le loro questioni fan turare gli orecchi.	14 The talk of hard-swearing people makes your hair stand on end, their brawling makes you stop yourears.
15 Uno spargimento di sangue è la rissa dei superbi, le loro invettive sono un ascolto penoso.	15 A quarrel between the proud leads to bloodshed, and their insults are embarrassing to hear.
16 Chi svela i segreti perde la fiducia e non trova più un amico per il suo cuore.	16 A betrayer of secrets forfeits al trust and wil never find the kind of friend he wants.
17 Ama l'amico e sii a lui fedele, ma se hai svelato i suoi segreti, non seguirlo più,	17 Be fond of a friend and keep faith with him, but if you have betrayed his secrets, do not go after himany more;
18 perché come chi ha perduto un defunto, così tu hai perduto l'amicizia del tuo prossimo.	18 for, as one destroys a person by kil ing him, so you have kil ed your neighbour's friendship,
19 Come un uccello, che ti sei fatto scappare di mano, così hai lasciato andare il tuo amico e non lo riprenderai.	19 and as you let a bird slip through your fingers, so you have let your friend go, and wil not catch him.
20 Non seguirlo, perché ormai è lontano; è fuggito come una gazzella dal laccio.	20 Do not go after him -- he is far away, he has fled like a gazel e from the snare.
21 Poiché una ferita si può fasciarla e un'ingiuria si può riparare, ma chi ha svelato segreti non ha più speranza.	21 For a wound can be bandaged and abuse forgiven, but for the betrayer of a secret there is no hope.
22 Chi ammicca con l'occhio trama il male, e nessuno potrà distoglierlo.	22 Someone with a sly wink is plotting mischief, no one can dissuade him from it.
23 Davanti a te il suo parlare è tutto dolce, ammira i tuoi discorsi, ma alle tue spalle cambierà il suo parlare e porrà inciampo alle tue parole.	23 Honey-tongued to your face, he is lost in admiration at your words; but behind your back he has otherthings to say, and turns your words into a stumbling-block.
24 Io odio molte cose, ma nessuna quanto lui, anche il Signore lo ha in odio.	24 I have found many things to hate, but nothing as much as him, and the Lord hates him too.
25 Chi scaglia un sasso in alto, se lo scaglia sulla testa, e un colpo a tradimento ferisce chi lo vibra.	25 Whoever throws a stone in the air, throws it on to his own head; a treacherous blow cuts both ways.
26 Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà dentro, chi tende un laccio vi resterà preso.	26 The man who digs a pit falls into it, whoever sets a snare wil be caught by it.
27 Il male si riverserà su chi lo fa, egli non saprà neppure da dove gli venga.	27 On anyone who does evil, evil wil recoil, without his knowing where it comes from.
28 Derisione e insulto per il superbo, la vendetta, come un leone, lo attende al varco.	28 Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of the arrogant, but vengeance lies in wait like a lion for such a one.
29 Saran presi al laccio quanti gioiscono per la caduta dei pii, il dolore li consumerà prima della loro morte.	29 The trap will close on all who rejoice in the downfal of the devout, and pain wil eat them up beforethey die.
30 Anche il rancore e l'ira sono un abominio, il peccatore li possiede.	30 Resentment and anger, these are foul things too, and a sinner is a master at them both.
