| 1 Per questo sei senza scusa tu che ti erigi a gli giudice, chiunque tu sia; sì, mentre giudichi gli altri condanni te stesso, perché commetti le medesime azioni tu, il giudice. | 1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. |
| 2 Ora sappiamo che il giudizio di Dio condanna secondo verità gli autori di opere simili. | 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. |
| 3 E pensi tu, che giudichi coloro che compiono tali azioni mentre tu pure le fai, di poter sfuggire al giudizio di Dio? | 3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? |
| 4 Oppure disprezzi le ricchezze della sua bontà, della sua pazienza, della sua longanimità; non comprendendo che questa bontà di Dio ti spinge solo al pentimento? | 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? |
| 5 Con la tua ostinatezza e con il tuo cuore impenitente accumuli sul tuo capo l’ira per il giorno dell’ira, quando si manifesterà il giusto giudizio di Dio, | 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; |
| 6 il quale renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere: | 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: |
| 7 a quelli che, con perseveranza nella pratica del bene, ricercano gloria, onore e incorruttibilità, egli darà la vita eterna; | 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: |
| 8 mentre incorreranno collera e sdegno i ricalcitranti che si rifiutano alla verità e aderiscono all’ingiustizia. | 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, |
| 9 Tribolazione e angoscia ricadrà su ognuno che opera il male: sopra il giudeo prima e poi sul greco; | 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; |
| 10 all’opposto, chiunque opera il bene avrà gloria, onore e pace: il giudeo prima e poi il greco. | 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: |
| 11 Poiché dinanzi a Dio non hanno luogo parzialità. | 11 For there is no respect of persons with God. |
| 12 Infatti, quanti avranno peccato senza la legge, periranno altresì senza la legge; e quanti avranno peccato sotto la legge, saranno giudicati in base alla legge; | 12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; |
| 13 non l’uditore della legge è giusto innanzi a Dio; solo colui che la osserva sarà riconosciuto tale. | 13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. |
| 14 Quando, infatti, i pagani, che non hanno la legge, compiono, seguendo natura, ciò che la legge prescrive, essi, pur privi di legge, son legge a se stessi. | 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: |
| 15 Essi mostrano scritta nei loro cuori la realtà della legge, poiché ad essa: rendono concorde testimonianza la loro coscienza e quei pensieri che, succedendosi a vicenda, ora li accusano ora li difendono... | 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) |
| 16 Lo si vedrà nel giorno in cui Iddio giudicherà le azioni occulte degli uomini, per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, secondo il mio evangelo. | 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. |
| 17 Ma tu che ti fregi del nome di giudeo, e riposi sicuro sopra la legge, e ti glorii in Dio, | 17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, |
| 18 ne conosci la volontà e, istruito dalla legge, sai discernere il meglio, | 18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; |
| 19 presumi d’essere tu stesso guida dei ciechi, luce di chi è nelle tenebre, | 19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, |
| 20 dottore degli ignoranti, maestro dei fanciulli, perché possiedi nella legge l’espressione stessa della scienza e della verità. | 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. |
| 21 ebbene, tu che istruisci gli altri, non sai istruire te stesso? tu che predichi di non rubare, rubi? | 21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? |
| 22 tu che condanni l’adulterio, lo commetti? tu che hai in abominio gli idoli, ne spogli i templi? | 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? |
| 23 tu che poni il tuo vanto nella legge, disonori poi Iddio col trasgredire la legge? | 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? |
| 24 Perciò sta scritto che a causa vostra il nome di Dio è bestemmiato tra i pagani. | 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. |
| 25 La stessa circoncisione ti giova solo se osservi la legge; ma se tu trasgredisci la legge, la tua circoncisione risulta inesistente. | 25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. |
| 26 Che se poi un incirconciso osserva le prescrizioni della legge, non sarà forse tenuto come circonciso pur non avendo la circoncisione? | 26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? |
| 27 Anzi, colui che è fisicamente incirconciso e osserva la legge, giudicherà te, che nonostante la legge e la circoncisione sei trasgressore della legge. | 27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? |
| 28 Poiché vero giudeo non è chi lo è esternamente, né la vera circoncisione è quella che appare sulla carne; | 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: |
| 29 vero giudeo è colui che lo è internamente, e vera circoncisione è quella del cuore, quella cioè non nella lettera, ma nello spirito, a cui il vanto deriva non dagli uomini, ma da Dio. | 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. |
