| 1 E avvenne che quando Gesù ebbe terminato di dare istruzioni ai suoi discepoli, partì di là per insegnare e predicare nelle loro città. | 1 When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns. |
| 2 Giovanni, avendo saputo nel carcere delle opere del Cristo, gli mandò a dire per mezzo dei suoi discepoli: | 2 When John heard in prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him |
| 3 « Sei tu colui che deve venire o dobbiamo aspettarne un altro? ». | 3 with this question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" |
| 4 Rispose loro Gesù: « Andate a riferire a Giovanni quel che udite e vedete: | 4 Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: |
| 5 i ciechi riacquistano la vista, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati, ai poveri è annunziata la buona novella, | 5 the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. |
| 6 e beato colui per il quale io non sarò occasione di scandalo ». | 6 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me." |
| 7 Mentre costoro se ne andavano, Gesù si mise a dire alle folle, a proposito di Giovanni: « Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? una canna agitata dal vento? | 7 As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? | 8 Ebbene, che cosa siete andati a vedere? un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Ecco, quelli che indossano morbide vesti sono nei palazzi dei re. | 8 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. |

| 11 In verità vi dico: fra i nati di donna non è apparso uno più grande di Giovanni il Battista; e tuttavia il più piccolo del regno dei cieli è più grande di lui. | 11 Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. |
| 12 Ma dai giorni di Giovanni il Battista fino ad ora il regno dei cieli soffre violenza e i violenti se ne impadroniscono. | 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force. |

For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. |
| 22 Ebbene, io vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio Tiro e Sidone avranno una sorte più sopportabile della vostra. | 22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. |
| 23 E tu, Cafarnao, credi che sarai innalzata fino al cielo? Fino all’ade sarai precipitata, perchè se i miracoli compiuti in te fossero stati fatti a Sodoma, essa sarebbe là ancora oggi. | 23 And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.' For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. |

| 27 Tutto mi è stato dato da mio Padre, e nessuno conosce il Figlio se non il Padre, e nessuno conosce il Padre se non il Figlio e colui al quale il Figlio voglia rivelarlo. | 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. | 28 Venite a me, voi tutti che siete stanchi e aggravati, ed io vi darò riposo. | 28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. |
| 29 Prendete il mio giogo su di voi e imparate da me, che sono mite ed umile di cuore, e troverete riposo per le anime vostre; 30 il mio giogo, difatti, è agevole, e il mio carico è leggero ». | 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. |
| 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light." |
