| 1 L’ira di Jahvè si accese di nuovo contro gli Israeliti ed egli incitò David contro di loro dicendo: «Va’, fa’ il censimento di Israele e di Giuda». | 1 Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go, number Israel and Judah." |
| 2 Il re disse dunque a Joab e ai capi dell’esercito che erano con lui: «Girate per tutte le tribù di Israele da Dan a Bersabea e passate in rassegna la popolazione, così che io possa saperne il numero». | 2 So the king said to Joab and the commanders of the army, who were with him, "Go through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beer-sheba, and number the people, that I may know the number of the people." |
| 3 Rispose Joab al re: «Jahvè tuo Dio moltiplichi la popolazione cento volte quanto essa è ora, e gli occhi del mio signore re lo vedano! Ma perché il mio signore re desidera una cosa simile?» | 3 But Joab said to the king, "May the LORD your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king still see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?" |
| 4 Tuttavia l’ordine del re prevalse contro Joab e contro i capi dell’esercito e così Joab e i capi dell’esercito si allontanarono dal re per fare il censimento della popolazione di Israele. | 4 But the king's word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel. |
| 5 Passarono il Giordano e si accamparono ad Aroer, a sud della città che si trova in mezzo alla valle, poi proseguirono per Gad fino a Jàzer. | 5 They crossed the Jordan, and began from Aroer, and from the city that is in the middle of the valley, toward Gad and on to Jazer. |
| 6 Poi giunsero in Galaad e nella regione sottostante all’Hermon; andarono poi a Dan e da Dan piegarono verso Sidone. | 6 Then they came to Gilead, and to Kadesh in the land of the Hittites; and they came to Dan, and from Dan they went around to Sidon, |
| 7 Vennero alla fortezza di Tiro e a tutte le città degli Hivvei e dei Cananei, infine uscirono al Negheb di Giuda, a Bersabea. | 7 and came to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites; and they went out to the Negeb of Judah at Beer-sheba. |
| 8 Girarono dunque tutto il paese e giunsero a Gerusalemme al termine di nove mesi e venti giorni. | 8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. |
| 9 Joab diede al re il totale del censimento della popolazione che risultò: per Israele, ottocentomila uomini capaci di maneggiare la spada; per Giuda, cinquecentomila uomini. | 9 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: in Israel there were eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand. |
| 10 Però il cuore fece sentire a David il rimprovero, dopo che ebbe fatto il censimento del popolo. Disse allora David a Jahvè: «Ho peccato grandemente in ciò che ho fatto! Ora dunque, o Jahvè, perdona l’iniguità del tuo servitore! Sì, sono stato stolto grandemente!» | 10 But David's heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O LORD, I pray thee, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly." |
| 11 Mentre David si alzava, la mattina seguente, la parola di Jahvè fu rivolta al profeta Gad, veggente di David: | 11 And when David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, |
| 12 «Va’ e parla a David: così dice Jahvè: “Tre cose io ti metto innanzi: scegli una tra di esse e io te la farò”». | 12 "Go and say to David, 'Thus says the LORD, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you." |
| 13 Gad andò a portare la notizia a David e gli disse: «Vuoi che ti sopraggiunga per tre anni la fame nel paese oppure tre mesi di fuga di fronte al nemico che ti insegua oppure che ci siano tre giorni di peste nel paese? Ora dunque rifletti e vedi che cosa devo riferire a chi mi manda». | 13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, "Shall three years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me." |
| 14 David rispose a Gad: «Sono in grande imbarazzo: ebbene, cadiamo in mano a Jahvè poiché grande è la sua misericordia, ma non voglio cadere in mano all’uomo!» | 14 Then David said to Gad, "I am in great distress; let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man." |
| 15 Allora Jahvè mandò la peste in Israele, dall’alba al tempo fissato: morirono da Dan fino a Bersabea settantamila persone del popolo. | 15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time; and there died of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. |
| 16 Jahvè mandò un angelo anche a Gerusalemme per distruggerla. | 16 And when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented of the evil, and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, "It is enough; now stay your hand." And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. |
| 17 Ora, avendo David visto l’angelo che colpiva il popolo, disse a Jahvè: «Ecco, sono io che ho peccato! Sono io che ho commesso l’iniquità! Queste pecore che cosa hanno fatto? Sia la tua mano contro di me e la casa di mio padre!» Allora Jahvè si pentì del male e disse all’angelo che distruggeva il popolo: «Basta! Ora rallenta la mano». L’angelo di Jahvè si trovava presso l’aia di Arauna il Gebuseo. | 17 Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who was smiting the people, and said, "Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me and against my father's house." |
| 18 Gad venne da David quel giorno stesso e gli disse: «Sali, innalza a Jahvè un altare nell’aia di Arauna il Gebuseo». | 18 And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, "Go up, rear an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite." |
| 19 David salì secondo la parola di Gad, secondo quanto Jahvè aveva ordinato. | 19 So David went up at Gad's word, as the LORD commanded. |
| 20 Arauna guardò e vide il re con i suoi servitori salire da lui; uscì, si prostrò con la faccia a terra innanzi al re | 20 And when Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming on toward him; and Araunah went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground. |
| 21 e disse: «Perché il mio signore re è venuto dal suo servitore?» David rispose: «A comperare da te l’aia per edificare un altare a Jahvè, onde cessi il flagello dal popolo». | 21 And Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" David said, "To buy the threshing floor of you, in order to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be averted from the people." |
| 22 Disse Arauna a David: «Il mio signore re la prenda pure e faccia quanto è bene ai suoi occhi. Ecco i buoi per il sacrificio, le tregge e gli arnesi dei buoi per la legna: | 22 Then Araunah said to David, "Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him; here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. |
| 23 tutto dona Arauna al re!» Arauna soggiunse: «Jahvè tuo Dio ti sia propizio». | 23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king." And Araunah said to the king, "The LORD your God accept you." |
| 24 Ma il re rispose ad Arauna: «No! Intendo solo comprare da te a prezzo, perché non voglio offrire sacrifici gratuiti a Jahvè mio Dio». David comprò l’aia e i buoi a denaro contato: cinquanta sicli. | 24 But the king said to Araunah, "No, but I will buy it of you for a price; I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. |
| 25 Poi David edificò là un altare a Jahvè e offrì olocausti e sacrifici pacifici. Jahvè si placò con il paese così che il flagello cessò da Israele. | 25 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD heeded supplications for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel. |
