BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El insomnio por la riqueza consume las carnes, las preocupaciones que trae ahuyentan el sueño.	1 The sleeplessness brought by wealth makes a person lose weight, the worry it causes drives awaysleep.
2 Las preocupaciones del día impiden dormir, la enfermedad grave quita el sueño.	2 The worries of the daytime prevent you from sleeping, like a serious il ness, they keep sleep at bay.
3 Se afana el rico por juntar riquezas, y cuando descansa, se hastía de sus placeres.	3 The rich for ever toils, piling up money, and then, leaving off, he is gorged with luxuries;
4 Se afana el pobre por falta de sustento, y cuando descansa, se acaba en la indigencia.	4 the poor for ever toils, barely making a living, and then, leaving off, is poorer than ever.
5 El que ama el oro no se verá justificado, el que anda tras el lucro se extraviará en él.	5 No one who loves money can easily avoid sinning, whoever pursues profit wil be corrupted by it.
6 Muchos se arruinaron por causa del oro, su perdición la tenían delante.	6 Gold has been the ruin of many; their coming destruction was self-evident,
7 Es leño de tropiezo para los que le ofrecen sacrificios, y todo insensato queda preso en él.	7 since it is a snare for those who sacrifice to it and stupid people al get caught in it.
8 Feliz el rico que fue hallado intachable, que tras el oro no se fue.	8 Happy the rich who is found to be blameless and does not go chasing after gold.
9 ¿Quién es, y le felicitaremos?, pues obró maravillas en su pueblo.	9 Who is he, so that we can congratulate him, for he has achieved marvels among his fellows?
10 ¿Quién sufrió esta prueba y fue hallado perfecto? será para él motivo de gloria. ¿Quién pudo prevaricar y no prevaricó, hacer mal y no lo hizo?	10 Who has been through this test and emerged perfect? He may wel be proud of that! Who has had thechance to sin and has not sinned, had the chance to do wrong and has not done it?
11 Sus bienes se consolidarán, y la asamblea hablará de sus bondades.	11 His fortune wil be firmly based and the assembly wil acclaim his generosity.
12 ¿En mesa suntuosa te has sentado?, no abras hacia ella tus fauces, no digas: «¡Qué de cosas hay aquí!»	12 If you are sitting down to a lavish table, do not display your greed, do not say, 'What a lot to eat!'
13 Recuerda que es cosa mala tener un ojo ávido, ¿qué ha sido creado peor que el ojo? por eso, por cualquier cosa llora.	13 Remember, it is bad to have a greedy eye. Is any creature more wicked than the eye? - That is why itis always weeping!
14 Donde mire tu huésped no extiendas tú la mano, y no te eches sobre el plato al tiempo que él.	14 Do not reach out for anything your host has his eye on, do not jostle him at the dish.
15 Juzga al prójimo como a ti mismo, y en todo asunto actúa con reflexión.	15 Judge your fel ow-guest's needs by your own, be thoughtful in every way.
16 Come como hombre bien educado lo que tienes delante, no te muestres glotón, para no hacerte odioso.	16 Eat what is offered you like a well brought-up person, do not wolf your food or you wil earn dislike.
17 Termina el primero por educación, no seas insaciable, y no tendrás tropiezo.	17 For politeness' sake be the first to stop; do not act the glutton, or you will give offence,
18 Si en medio de muchos te has sentado a la mesa, no alargues tu mano antes que ellos.	18 and if you are sitting with a large party, do not help yourself before the others do.
19 ¡Qué poco le basta a un hombre bien educado!, y luego en el lecho no resuella.	19 A little is quite enough for a wel -bred person; his breathing is easy when he lies in bed.
20 A vientre moderado, sueño saludable, se levanta temprano y es dueño de sí. Insomnio, vómitos y cólicos le esperan al hombre insaciable.	20 A moderate diet ensures sound sleep, one gets up early, in the best of spirits. Sleeplessness,biliousness and gripe are what the glutton has to endure.
21 Si te viste obligado a comer demasiado, levántate, vomítalo lejos, y quedarás tranquilo.	21 If you are forced to eat too much, get up, go and vomit, and you will feel better.
22 Oyeme, hijo, y no me desprecies, al fin comprenderás mis palabras. En todo lo que hagas sé moderado, y no te vendrá enfermedad alguna.	22 Listen to me, my child, do not disregard me, eventually you wil see the force of my words. Bemoderate in al your activities and il ness wil never overtake you.
23 Al espléndido en las comidas le bendicen los labios, el testimonio de su munificencia es firme.	23 People praise the person who keeps a splendid table, and their opinion of his munificence is sound.
24 Al mezquino en la comida le murmura la ciudad, el testimonio de su mezquindad es minucioso.	24 But a niggardly host provokes universal resentment and people wil retail instances of his meanness.
25 Con el vino no te hagas el valiente, porque a muchos ha perdido el vino.	25 Do not play the valiant at your wine, for wine has been the undoing of many.
26 El horno prueba el temple del acero, así el vino a los corazones en disputa de orgullosos.	26 The furnace proves the temper of steel, and wine proves hearts in the drinking bouts of braggarts.
27 Como la vida es el vino para el hombre, si lo bebes con medida. ¿Qué es la vida a quien le falta el vino, que ha sido creado para contento de los hombres?	27 Wine gives life if drunk in moderation. What is life worth without wine? It came into being to makepeople happy.
28 Regocijo del corazón y contento del alma es el vino bebido a tiempo y con medida.	28 Drunk at the right time and in the right amount, wine makes for a glad heart and a cheerful mind.
29 Amargura del alma, el vino bebido con exceso por provocación o desafío.	29 Bitterness of soul comes of wine drunk to excess out of temper or bravado.
30 La embriaguez acrecienta el furor del insensato hasta su caída, disminuye la fuerza y provoca las heridas.	30 Drunkenness excites the stupid to a fury to his own harm, it reduces his strength while leading toblows.
31 En banquete no reproches a tu prójimo, no le desprecies cuando está contento, palabra injuriosa no le digas ni le molestes reclamándole dinero.	31 Do not provoke your fel ow-guest at a wine feast, do not make fun of him when he is enjoying himself, do not take him to task or annoy him by reclaiming money owed.
