Proverbios 23

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Si te sientas a comer con poderoso, mira bien al que está frente a ti;	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 pon un cuchillo a tu garganta si eres hombre de apetito;	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 no desees sus manjares, porque es alimento engañoso.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 No te fatigues por eniquecerte, deja de pensar en ello.	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 Pones tus ojos en ello y no hay nada. Porque se hace alas como águila, y se vuela hasta el cielo.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 No comas pan con hombre de malas intenciones, ni desees sus manjares.	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 Porque, según lo que calcula en su interior, te dice: «¡Come y bebe!», pero su corazón no está contigo.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 Nada más comer lo vomitarías y tus palabras amables serían tu ruina.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 A oídos de necio no hables, porque se burlará de la prudencia de tus dichos.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 No desplaces el lindero antiguo, no entres en el campo de los huérfanos,	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 porque su vengador es poderoso, y defendería su pleito contra ti.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 No ahorres corrección al niño, que no se va a morir porque le castigues con la vara.	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 Con la vara le castigarás y librarás su alma del seol.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará también mi corazón,	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 y exultarán mis riñones al decir tus labios cosas rectas.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, más bien en el temor de Yahveh permanezca todo el día,	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 porque hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Escucha, hijo, y serás sabio, y endereza tu corazón por el camino...	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 No seas de los que se emborrachan de vino, ni de los que se ahítan de carne,	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 porque borracho y glotón se empobrecen y el sopor se viste de harapos.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Escucha a tu padre, que él te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre por ser vieja.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas: la sabiduría, la instrucción, la inteligencia.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 El padre del justo rebosa de gozo, quien engendra un sabio por él se regocija.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Se alegrarán tu padre y tu madre, y gozará la que te ha engendrado.	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y que tus ojos hallen deleite en mis caminos.	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 Fosa profunda es la prostituta, pozo angosto la mujer extraña.	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 También ella como ladrón pone emboscadas, y multiplica entre los hombres los traidores.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 ¿Para quién las «Desgracias»? ¿para quién los «Ayes»? ¿para quién los litigios? ¿para quién los lloros? ¿para quién los golpes sin motivo? ¿para quién los ojos turbios?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Para los que se eternizan con el vino, los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 No mires el vino: ¡Qué buen color tiene! ¡cómo brinca en la copa! ¡qué bien entra!	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Pero, a la postre, como serpiente muerde, como víbora pica.	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 Estarás como acostado en el corazón del mar, o acostado en la punta de un mástil.	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 «Me han golpeado, pero no estoy enfermo; me han tundido a palos, pero no lo he sentido, ¿Cuándo me despertaré...?, me lo seguiré preguntando».	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
