Proverbios 23

BIBLIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Si te sientas a comer con poderoso, mira bien al que está frente a ti;	1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is before you;
2 pon un cuchillo a tu garganta si eres hombre de apetito;	2 And put a knife to your throat if you have a ravenous appetite.
3 no desees sus manjares, porque es alimento engañoso.	3 Do not desire his delicacies; they are deceitful food.
4 No te fatigues por eniquecerte, deja de pensar en ello.	4 Toil not to gain wealth, cease to be concerned about it;
5 Pones tus ojos en ello y no hay nada. Porque se hace alas como águila, y se vuela hasta el cielo.	5 While your glance flits to it, it is gone! for assuredly it grows wings, like the eagle that flies toward heaven.
6 No comas pan con hombre de malas intenciones, ni desees sus manjares.	6 Do not take food with a grudging man, and do not desire his dainties;
7 Porque, según lo que calcula en su interior, te dice: «¡Come y bebe!», pero su corazón no está contigo.	7 For in his greed he is like a storm. "Eat and drink," he says to you, though his heart is not with you;
8 Nada más comer lo vomitarías y tus palabras amables serían tu ruina.	8 The little you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your agreeable words.
9 A oídos de necio no hables, porque se burlará de la prudencia de tus dichos.	9 Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 No desplaces el lindero antiguo, no entres en el campo de los huérfanos,	10 Remove not the ancient landmark, nor invade the fields of orphans;
11 porque su vengador es poderoso, y defendería su pleito contra ti.	11 For their redeemer is strong; he will defend their cause against you.
12 Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.	12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.
13 No ahorres corrección al niño, que no se va a morir porque le castigues con la vara.	13 Withhold not chastisement from a boy; if you beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Con la vara le castigarás y librarás su alma del seol.	14 Beat him with the rod, and you will save him from the nether world.
15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará también mi corazón,	15 My son, if your heart be wise, my own heart also will rejoice;
16 y exultarán mis riñones al decir tus labios cosas rectas.	16 And my inmost being will exult, when your lips speak what is right.
17 No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, más bien en el temor de Yahveh permanezca todo el día,	17 Let not your heart emulate sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD always;
18 porque hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.	18 For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Escucha, hijo, y serás sabio, y endereza tu corazón por el camino...	19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the right way.
20 No seas de los que se emborrachan de vino, ni de los que se ahítan de carne,	20 Consort not with winebibbers, nor with those who eat meat to excess;
21 porque borracho y glotón se empobrecen y el sopor se viste de harapos.	21 For the drunkard and the glutton come to poverty, and torpor clothes a man in rags.
22 Escucha a tu padre, que él te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre por ser vieja.	22 Listen to your father who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.
23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas: la sabiduría, la instrucción, la inteligencia.	23 Get the truth, and sell it not-- wisdom, instruction and understanding.
24 El padre del justo rebosa de gozo, quien engendra un sabio por él se regocija.	24 The father of a just man will exult with glee; he who begets a wise son will have joy in him.
25 Se alegrarán tu padre y tu madre, y gozará la que te ha engendrado.	25 Let your father and mother have joy; let her who bore you exult.
26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y que tus ojos hallen deleite en mis caminos.	26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.
27 Fosa profunda es la prostituta, pozo angosto la mujer extraña.	27 For the harlot is a deep ditch, and the adulteress a narrow pit;
28 También ella como ladrón pone emboscadas, y multiplica entre los hombres los traidores.	28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the faithless among men.
29 ¿Para quién las «Desgracias»? ¿para quién los «Ayes»? ¿para quién los litigios? ¿para quién los lloros? ¿para quién los golpes sin motivo? ¿para quién los ojos turbios?	29 Who scream? Who shriek? Who have strife? Who have anxiety? Who have wounds for nothing? Who have black eyes?
30 Para los que se eternizan con el vino, los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.	30 Those who linger long over wine, those who engage in trials of blended wine.
31 No mires el vino: ¡Qué buen color tiene! ¡cómo brinca en la copa! ¡qué bien entra!	31 Look not on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the glass. It goes down smoothly;
32 Pero, a la postre, como serpiente muerde, como víbora pica.	32 but in the end it bites like a serpent, or like a poisonous adder.
33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son.	33 Your eyes behold strange sights, and your heart utters disordered thoughts;
34 Estarás como acostado en el corazón del mar, o acostado en la punta de un mástil.	34 You are like one now lying in the depths of the sea, now sprawled at the top of the mast.
35 «Me han golpeado, pero no estoy enfermo; me han tundido a palos, pero no lo he sentido, ¿Cuándo me despertaré...?, me lo seguiré preguntando».	35 "They struck me, but it pained me not; They beat me, but I felt it not; When shall I awake to seek wine once again?"
