Proverbios 23

1 Si te sientas a comer con poderoso, mira bien al que está frente a ti;	1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 pon un cuchillo a tu garganta si eres hombre de apetito;	2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 no desees sus manjares, porque es alimento engañoso.	3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
4 No te fatigues por eniquecerte, deja de pensar en ello.	4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5 Pones tus ojos en ello y no hay nada. Porque se hace alas como águila, y se vuela hasta el cielo.	5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
6 No comas pan con hombre de malas intenciones, ni desees sus manjares.	6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 Porque, según lo que calcula en su interior, te dice: «¡Come y bebe!», pero su corazón no está contigo.	7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8 Nada más comer lo vomitarías y tus palabras amables serían tu ruina.	8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9 A oídos de necio no hables, porque se burlará de la prudencia de tus dichos.	9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 No desplaces el lindero antiguo, no entres en el campo de los huérfanos,	10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11 porque su vengador es poderoso, y defendería su pleito contra ti.	11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
12 Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.	12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 No ahorres corrección al niño, que no se va a morir porque le castigues con la vara.	13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 Con la vara le castigarás y librarás su alma del seol.	14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará también mi corazón,	15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16 y exultarán mis riñones al decir tus labios cosas rectas.	16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17 No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, más bien en el temor de Yahveh permanezca todo el día,	17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
18 porque hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.	18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19 Escucha, hijo, y serás sabio, y endereza tu corazón por el camino...	19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 No seas de los que se emborrachan de vino, ni de los que se ahítan de carne,	20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21 porque borracho y glotón se empobrecen y el sopor se viste de harapos.	21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22 Escucha a tu padre, que él te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre por ser vieja.	22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas: la sabiduría, la instrucción, la inteligencia.	23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 El padre del justo rebosa de gozo, quien engendra un sabio por él se regocija.	24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25 Se alegrarán tu padre y tu madre, y gozará la que te ha engendrado.	25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y que tus ojos hallen deleite en mis caminos.	26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 Fosa profunda es la prostituta, pozo angosto la mujer extraña.	27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 También ella como ladrón pone emboscadas, y multiplica entre los hombres los traidores.	28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
29 ¿Para quién las «Desgracias»? ¿para quién los «Ayes»? ¿para quién los litigios? ¿para quién los lloros? ¿para quién los golpes sin motivo? ¿para quién los ojos turbios?	29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 Para los que se eternizan con el vino, los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.	30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 No mires el vino: ¡Qué buen color tiene! ¡cómo brinca en la copa! ¡qué bien entra!	31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 Pero, a la postre, como serpiente muerde, como víbora pica.	32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son.	33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34 Estarás como acostado en el corazón del mar, o acostado en la punta de un mástil.	34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 «Me han golpeado, pero no estoy enfermo; me han tundido a palos, pero no lo he sentido, ¿Cuándo me despertaré...?, me lo seguiré preguntando».	35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
