VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Non zeles mulierem sinus tui,
ne ostendat super te malitiam doctrinæ nequam.
1 Be not jealous of the wife of your bosom, lest you teach her to do evil against you.
2 Non des mulieri potestatem animæ tuæ,
ne ingrediatur in virtutem tuam, et confundaris.
2 Give no woman power over you to trample upon your dignity.
3 Ne respicias mulierem multivolam,
ne forte incidas in laqueos illius.
3 Be not intimate with a strange woman, lest you fall into her snares.
4 Cum saltatrice ne assiduus sis,
nec audias illam, ne forte pereas in efficacia illius.
4 With a singing girl be not familiar, lest you be caught in her wiles.
5 Virginem ne conspicias,
ne forte scandalizeris in decore illius.
5 Entertain no thoughts against a virgin, lest you be enmeshed in damages for her.
6 Ne des fornicariis animam tuam in ullo,
ne perdas te et hæreditatem tuam.
6 Give not yourself to harlots, lest you surrender your inheritance.
7 Noli circumspicere in vicis civitatis,
nec oberraveris in plateis illius.
7 Gaze not about the lanes of the city and wander not through its squares;
8 Averte faciem tuam a muliere compta,
et ne circumspicias speciem alienam.
8 Avert your eyes from a comely woman; gaze not upon the beauty of another's wife-- Through woman's beauty many perish, for lust for it burns like fire.
9 Propter speciem mulieris multi perierunt :
et ex hoc concupiscentia quasi ignis exardescit.
9 With a married woman dine not, recline not at table to drink by her side, Lest your heart be drawn to her and you go down in blood to the grave.
10 Omnis mulier quæ est fornicaria,
quasi stercus in via conculcabitur.
10 Discard not an old friend, for the new one cannot equal him. A new friend is like new wine which you drink with pleasure only when it has aged.
11 Speciem mulieris alienæ multi admirati, reprobi facti sunt :
colloquium enim illius quasi ignis exardescit.
11 Envy not a sinner's fame, for you know not what disaster awaits him.
12 Cum aliena muliere ne sedeas omnino,
nec accumbas cum ea super cubitum :
12 Rejoice not at a proud man's success; remember he will not reach death unpunished.
13 et non alterceris cum illa in vino,
ne forte declinet cor tuum in illam,
et sanguine tuo labaris in perditionem.
13 Keep far from the man who has power to kill, and you will not be filled with the dread of death. But if you approach him, offend him not, lest he take away your life; Know that you are stepping among snares and walking over a net.
14 Ne derelinquas amicum antiquum :
novus enim non erit similis illi.
14 As best you can, take your neighbors' measure, and associate with the wise.
15 Vinum novum amicus novus :
veterascet, et cum suavitate bibes illud.
15 With the learned be intimate; let all your conversation be about the law of the LORD.
16 Non zeles gloriam et opes peccatoris :
non enim scis quæ futura sit illius subversio.
16 Have just men for your table companions; in the fear of God be your glory.
17 Non placeat tibi injuria injustorum,
sciens quoniam usque ad inferos non placebit impius.
17 Skilled artisans are esteemed for their deftness; but the ruler of his people is the skilled sage.
18 Longe abesto ab homine potestatem habente occidendi,
et non suspicaberis timorem mortis.
18 Feared in the city is the man of railing speech, and he who talks rashly is hated.
19 Et si accesseris ad illum, noli aliquid committere,
ne forte auferat vitam tuam.
20 Communionem mortis scito,
quoniam in medio laqueorum ingredieris,
et super dolentium arma ambulabis.
21 Secundum virtutem tuam cave te a proximo tuo,
et cum sapientibus et prudentibus tracta.
22 Viri justi sint tibi convivæ,
et in timore Dei sit tibi gloriatio :
23 et in sensu sit tibi cogitatus Dei,
et omnis enarratio tua in præceptis Altissimi.
24 In manu artificum opera laudabuntur,
et princeps populi in sapientia sermonis sui,
in sensu vero seniorum verbum.
25 Terribilis est in civitate sua homo linguosus :
et temerarius in verbo suo odibilis erit.
