NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
Erat autem in proximo dies festus Iudaeorum, Scenopegia.2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
Dixerunt ergo adeum fratres eius: “ Transi hinc et vade in Iudaeam, ut et discipuli tuivideant opera tua, quae facis.3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
Si haec facis, manifesta teipsum mundo ”.4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
Neque enimfratres eius credebant in eum.5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
Dicit ergo eis Iesus: “ Tempus meum nondumadest, tempus autem vestrum semer est paratum.6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
Vos ascendite ad diem festum; ego non ascendo ad diem festum istum, quia meumtempus nondum impletum est ”.8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
Haec autem cum dixisset, ipse mansit inGalilaea.
Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
Iudaei ergo quaerebant eum in die festo etdicebant: “ Ubi est ille? ”.11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
Et murmur multus de eo erat in turba. Aliiquidem dicebant: “ Bonus est! ”; alii autem dicebant: “ Non, sed seducitturbam! ”.12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
Nemo tamen palam loquebatur de illo propter metum Iudaeorum.
Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
Mirabantur ergo Iudaei dicentes: “ Quomodo hic litteras scit, cum nondidicerit? ”.15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
Respondit ergo eis Iesus et dixit: “ Mea doctrina non estmea sed eius, qui misit me.16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
Si quis voluerit voluntatem eius facere, cognoscet de doctrina utrum ex Deo sit, an ego a meipso loquar.17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
Nonne Moysesdedit vobis legem? Et nemo ex vobis facit legem. Quid me quaeritis interficere?”.19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
Respondit turba: “ Daemonium habes! Quis te quaerit interficere? ”.20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
Respondit Iesus et dixit eis: “ Unum opus feci, et omnes miramini.21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
Propterea Moyses dedit vobis circumcisionem — non quia ex Moyse est sed expatribus — et in sabbato circumciditis hominem.22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
Si circumcisionem accipithomo in sabbato, ut non solvatur lex Moysis, mihi indignamini, quia totumhominem sanum feci in sabbato?23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
Nolite iudicare secundum faciem, sed iustumiudicium iudicate ”.
Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
Dicebant ergo quidam ex Hierosolymitis: “ Nonne hic est, quem quaeruntinterficere?25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
Numquid verecognoverunt principes quia hic est Christus?26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
Sed hunc scimus unde sit,Christus autem cum venerit, nemo scit unde sit ”.27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
Clamavit ergo docens intemplo Iesus et dicens: “ Et me scitis et unde sim scitis. Et a meipso nonveni, sed est verus, qui misit me, quem vos non scitis.28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
Ego scio eum, quia abipso sum, et ipse me misit ”.29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
Quaerebant ergo eum apprehendere, et nemomisit in illum manus, quia nondum venerat hora eius.30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
Audierunt pharisaei turbam murmurantem de illo haec et miserunt pontifices etpharisaei ministros, ut apprehenderent eum.32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
Dixit ergo Iesus: “ Adhucmodicum tempus vobiscum sum et vado ad eum, qui misit me.33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
Quaeretis me et noninvenietis; et ubi sum ego, vos non potestis venire ”.34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
Numquid indispersionem Graecorum iturus est et docturus Graecos?35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
In novissimo autem die magno festivitatis stabat Iesus et clamavit dicens:“ Si quis sitit, veniat ad me et bibat,37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
qui credit in me. Sicut dixitScriptura, flumina de ventre eius fluent aquae vivae ”.38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
”;40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
alii dicebant: “ Hic est Christus! ”; quidam autemdicebant: “ Numquid a Galilaea Christus venit?41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
Nonne Scriptura dixit: “Exsemine David et de Bethlehem castello, ubi erat David, venit Christus”? ”.42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
Dissensio itaque facta est in turba propter eum.
So the people could not agree about him.
Quidam autem ex ipsis volebant apprehendere eum, sed nemo misit super illummanus.44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
”.45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
Responderunt ministri: “ Numquamsic locutus est homo ”.46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
Responderunt ergo eis pharisaei: “ Numquid et vosseducti estis?47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
Numquid aliquis ex principibus credidit in eum aut expharisaeis?48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
”.49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
Dicit Nicodemus ad eos, ille qui venit ad eum antea, qui unus erat ex ipsis:50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
“ Numquid lex nostra iudicat hominem, nisi audierit ab ipso prius etcognoverit quid faciat? ”.51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
Scrutare et vide quia propheta a Galilaea non surgit! ”.52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
Etreversi sunt unusquisque in domum suam.
They al went home,
