1 Era in quel tempo Jephte di Galaad uomo valorosissimo nel mestiero dell'armi, figliuolo di Galaad, e di una donna meretrice.	1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
2 Or Galaad avea moglie, e da lei ebbe de' figliuoli, i quali cresciuti in età cacciarono Jephte dicendo: Tu non puoi esser erede nella casa del padre nostro, perchè se’ nato di un'altra donna.	2 And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
3 Ed egli fuggendo, e nascondendosi a loro, abitò nella terra di Tob: e si adunarono presso di lui degli uomini miserabili che viveano di preda, e lo seguitavano come loro principe.	3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
4 In que' giorni combattevano i figliuoli di Ammon contro Israele.	4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 E avendolo quelli ridotto in grandi strettezze, andarono i seniori di Galaad a prendere dalla terra di Tob Jephte per loro soccorso,	5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
6 E dissero a lui: Vieni, e sii nostro principe, e combatti contro i figliuoli di Ammon.	6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
7 Ma egli rispose loro: Non siete voi quegli che mi odiate, e mi avete scacciato dalla casa del padre mio? E adesso stretti dalla necessità ricorrete a me.	7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
8 E i principi di Galaad dissero a Jephte: Per questo appunto siamo ora venuti da te; affinchè tu venga con noi, e combatta contro i figliuoli di Ammon, e sii condottiero di tutti quelli che abitano in Galaad.	8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
9 Ma Jephte rispose loro: Se veramente siete venuti a trovarmi, affinchè io combatta per voi contro i figliuoli di Ammon, quando egli avvenga che il Signore li dia in mio potere, sarò il vostro principe?	9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10 E quelli risposero a lui: II Signore che ascolta queste cose, egli è mezzano, e testimone, come noi adempiremo le nostre promesse.	10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
11 Andò adunque Jephte co' principi di Galaad, e tutto il popolo lo creò suo principe. E parlò Jephte di tutte le cose sue dinanzi al Signore in Maspha.	11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
12 E mandò ambasciadori al re de' figliuoli di Ammon, i quali a suo nome dicessero: Che hai da fare con me tu, che ti se' mosso contro di me e dai il guasto al mio paese?	12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13 Ma quegli rispose loro: Israele occupò il mio paese in venendo dall'Egitto da' confini di Arnon sino a Jaboc, e al Giordano: ora adunque rendilo a me colle buone.	13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14 Jephte pe' medesimi uomini diede risposta, e comandò loro di dire al re di Ammon:	14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:
15 Queste cose dice Jephte: Israele non si prese la terra di Moab, nè la terra de' figliuoli di Ammon;	15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16 Ma allorché uscirono dall'Egitto, camminarono pel deserto fino al mar Rosso, e giunti a Cades,	16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 Mandarono ambasciadori al re di Edom, dicendo: Permettici di passare per la tua terra. Ma egli non volle esaudire queste preghiere. Mandarono anche al re di Moab, il quale negò anch'egli con disprezzo di concedere il transito; ond'essi si fermaron in Cades.	17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18 E costeggiò la terra di Edom, e la terra di Moab, e arrivò verso la parte orientale della terra di Moab, e pose il campo di là da Arnon, e non volle mettere il piede dentro i confini di Moab; perocché Arnon è il confine della terra di Moab.	18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.
19 Mandò adunque Israele ambasciadori a Sehon re degli Amorrhei che abitava in Hesebon, i quali gli dissero: Permettici di passare pel tuo paese sino al fiume.	19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
20 Ma egli pure disprezzando le parole d'Israele non gli permise di passare dentro i suoi confini, ma, radunata una immensa moltitudine, si mosse contro di lui fino a Jasa, e si opponeva a lui con gran forza.	20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 Ma il Signore diede lui, e tutto il suo esercito in potere d'Israele, il quale lo sconfisse, e divenne padrone di tutta la terra degli Amorrhei che abitavano in quella regione,	21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 E di tutto quello che era compreso dentro i loro confini dall'Arnon sino a Jaboc, e dalla solitudine sino al Giordano.	22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
23 Avendo adunque il Signore Dio cacciati gli Amorrhei per mezzo d'Israele suo popolo che fece guerra contro di essi, tu vuoi adesso esser padrone della lor terra?	23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
24 Non è egli vero che è di tua ragione tutto quello che appartiene al tuo dio Chamos? Sarà adunque di nostra proprietà tutto quello che il Signore Dio nostro acquistò colla vittoria:	24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25 Se pure tu forse non sei qualche cosa di più che Balac figliuolo di Sephor re di Moab; ovvero hai da far vedere che questi abbia mosso querela ad Israele, e abbia impugnate le armi contro di lui,	25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26 Per tutto il tempo che questi ha abitato in Hesebon, e ne' suoi villaggi, e in Aroer, e ne' suoi villaggi, e in tutte quante le città vicine al Giordano, cioè per trecento anni. Per qual ragione in si lungo spazio di tempo nulla tentaste, e nulla aveste da ripetere?	26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
27 Non fo adunque io torto a te, ma tu male ti porti contro di me, intimandomi una guerra non giusta. Giudichi il Signore arbitro in questo dì tra Israele, e i figliuoli di Ammon.	27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28 Ma il re de' figliuoli di Ammon non volle restar appagato delle parole di Jephte riferite a lui dagli ambasciadori.	28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Entrò adunque in Jephte io spirito del Signore, ed egli andò in giro per tutto il paese di Galaad, e di Manasse, e di Maspha di Galaad, e di là si avanzò verso i figliuoli di Ammon.	29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 E fece voto al Signore, e disse: Se tu darai in mio potere i figliuoli di Ammon,	30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31 Il primo, chiunque egli sia, che uscirà dalle porte di casa mia, e verrà incontro a me nel ritornar che farò vincitore de' figliuoli di Ammon, l'offerirò in olocausto al Signore.	31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32 E Jephte andò contro i figliuoli di Ammon per combatterli: e il Signore li diede nelle sue mani.	32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.
33 Ed espugnò venti città da Aroer sino a Mennith, e sino ad Abel che è circondata di vigne, sconfitta grande oltre modo colla quale furono abbattuti i figliuoli di Ammon da' figliuoli d'Israele.	33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 Ma nel ritornar che faceva Jephte a casa sua in Maspha, gli andò incontro la sua unica figlia (imperocché non avea egli altri figliuoli) menando carole al suono di timpani.	34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 E com'ei l’ebbe veduta, stracciò le sue vesti, e disse: Ahi, figliuola mia! Tu mi hai ingannato, e ti se' ingannata anche tu: perocché io ho data parola al Signore, e non potrò fare altra cosa.	35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
36 Rispose ella a lui: Padre mio, se tu hai data parola al Signore, fa di me quello che hai promesso, essendo stato a te conceduto di far vendetta dei tuoi nemici, e di vincerli.	36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37 E disse di poi al padre: Questo solo concedimi, di che ti prego. Lasciami andar per due mesi girando attorno pe' monti colle mie compagne a piangere la mia verginità.	37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
38 Ed ei rispose: Va pure. E lasciolla andare per due mesi: ed ella partì colle sue compagne, e amiche, e piangeva su' monti la sua verginità.	38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39 E finiti i due mesi se ne tornò al padre, ed egli fece di lei quel che avea promesso con voto, ed ella non conobbe uomo. E quindi venne in Israele il costume, e si è conservata questa consuetudine,	39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 Che una volta l’anno si radunino insieme le fanciulle d'Israele a piangere la figliuola di Jephte di Galaad per quattro giorni.	40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
