BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste sono le parole dette da Mosè a tutto Israele di là dal Giordano nella pianura del deserto dirimpetto al mar Rosso, tra Pharan e Tophel e Laban e Haseroth, dove si trova moltissimo oro.	1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.
2 In distanza di undici giornate da Horeb prendendo la strada del monte Seir fino a Cadesbarne,	2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.
3 Il quarantesimo anno, l’undecimo mese, il primo mese annunziò Mosè ai figliuoli d'Israele tutto quello che il Signore gli avea comandato di dire ad essi;	3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.
4 Dopo la sconfitta di Sehon re degli Amorrhei, il quale abitava in Hesebon, e di Og re di Basan, il quale abitò in Astaroth, e in Edrai,	4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.
5 Di là dal Giordano nella terra di Moab. E prese Mosè a spiegar la legge, e disse:	5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:
6 Il Signore Dio nostro ha parlato a noi sull'Horeb, dicendo: Assai tempo avete voi fatto dimora presso a questa montagna:	6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
7 Movetevi, e venite al monte degli Amorrhei, e agli altri luoghi vicini alle pianure, e alle colline, e alle valli verso mezzodì, e lungo il lido del mare, alla terra de' Cananei, e del Libano sino al gran fiume Eufrate.	7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.
8 Ecco (diss'egli), ch'io l'ho data a voi: entratevi, e occupatela: ella è quella che il Signore promise con giuramento a' padri vostri Abramo, Isacco, e Giacobbe di dare a loro, e a’ loro discendenti dopo di essi.	8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."
9 E io in quel tempo vi dissi:	9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.
10 Non posso io solo reggervi: perché il Signore Dio vostro vi ha moltiplicati, e siete in oggi in numero grande, come le stelle del cielo.	10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.
11 (Il Signore Dio dei padri vostri aggiunga a questo numero molte migliaia, e vi benedica, come ho già detto).	11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.
12 Non posso io solo reggere a' vostri affari, e alla fatica, e alle dispute.	12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?
13 Scegliete tra voi degli uomini saggi, e di esperienza, e la vita de' quali sia lodata nelle vostre tribù, affinché io ve li dia per vostri capi.	13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."
14 Allora voi mi rispondeste: Buona cosa è quella che tu vuoi fare.	14 You replied, "Your plan is good."
15 E io presi uomini saggi e nobili delle vostre tribù, e li dichiarai principi, e tribuni, e capi di cento, e di cinquanta, e di dieci uomini, affinché v'istruissero di tutte le cose.	15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.
16 E gli avvertii, e dissi loro: Ascoltateli, e giudicate secondo il giusto, o si tratti d'un cittadino, o d'un forestiere:	16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.
17 Non si farà differenza di persone; ascoltate il piccolo come il grande: e non sarete accettatori di persone; perocché in luogo di Dio giudicate voi. Che se alcuna cosa vi parrà difficile, datene parte a me, e io la sentirò.	17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.
18 E ordinai tutto quello che far dovevate.	18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."
19 Partiti poi da Horeb passammo per un deserto terribile e grandissimo, qual voi lo vedeste, andando verso il monte degli Amorrhei, come il Signore Dio nostro ci avea comandato. E giunti a Cadesbarne,	19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.
20 Io vi dissi: Voi siete giunti al monte degli Amorrhei, di cui il Signore Dio nostro ci farà padroni.	20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.
21 Mira la terra, che dà a te il Signore Dio tuo: entravi, e prendine il possesso, come disse il Signore Dio nostro a' padri tuoi: non temere, e non paventare di nulla.	21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."
22 E veniste da me tutti, e diceste: Mandiamo gente a visitare la terra, affinché ci riferiscano, per quale strada dobbiamo entrarvi, e verso quali città dobbiamo incamminarci.	22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."
23 E io avendo acconsentito, mandai dodici de' vostri, uno per ogni tribù.	23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
24 I quali essendo andati, e avendo valicati i monti, arrivarono fino alla valle del Grappolo, e disaminata la terra,	24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.
25 Presero de' suoi frutti, e per mostrarne la fecondità, li portarono a noi, e dissero: Buona terra è quella che il Signore Dio nostro vuol dare a noi.	25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."
26 Ma voi non voleste andarvi, ma increduli alle parole del Signore Dio nostro,	26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.
27 Mormoravate nelle vostre tende, e dicevate: II Signore ci vuol male, e per questo ci ha tratti dalla terra d'Egitto per darci nelle mani degli Amorrhei, e sterminarci.	27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.
28 Dove andremo noi? gli esploratori ci hanno sbigottiti dicendo: La moltitudine è grande, e di statura più alta della nostra: città grandi e fortificate sino al cielo: noi vi abbiam veduto de' figliuoli di Enacim.	28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."
29 E io vi dissi: Non temete, e non abbiate paura di loro:	29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.
30 Il Signore Dio, che è vostro condottiere, combatterà egli stesso per voi, come fece in Egitto a vista di tutti.	30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.
31 E nella solitudine (tu l’hai veduto) il Signore Dio tuo ti ha portato per tutto il tuo viaggio fino all’arrivo in questo luogo, come suole un uomo portare il piccolo suo fanciullo.	31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."
32 E nemmeno con tutto questo voi credeste al Signore Dio vostro,	32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,
33 Il quale è venuto innanzi a voi nel cammino, e ha misurati i luoghi, ove dovevate piantar le tende, mostrandovi di notte la strada col fuoco, e di giorno colla colonna della nuvola.	33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.
34 E avendo il Signore udito il rumor di vostre parole, sdegnato giurò, e disse:	34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,
35 Nissuno degli uomini di questa generazione pessima vedrà quella terra buona, la quale io con giuramento promisi a' padri vostri,	35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,
36 Eccetto Caleb figliuolo di Jephone: perocché egli la vedrà, e a lui, e a' suoi figliuoli darò la terra, che egli ha calcato, perché egli ha seguito il Signore.	36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."
37 Né dee far meraviglia lo sdegno di lui contro il popolo, mentre con me ancora sdegnato per cagion vostra il Signore disse: Neppur tu vi entrerai:	37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.
38 Ma Giosuè figliuolo di Nun, tuo ministro, vi entrerà egli in tuo luogo: ammoniscilo, e fagli coraggio, ed egli dividerà a sorte la terra ad Israele.	38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.
39 I vostri fanciulli, dei quali avete detto, che sarebbero menati schiavi, e i vostri figliuoli, che oggi ignorano la differenza dal bene al male, eglino vi entreranno: e ad essi darò la terra, ed ei la possederanno.	39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.
40 Ma voi tornale indietro, e andatevene nel deserto per la strada, che mena al mar Rosso.	40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."
41 E voi mi rispondeste: Abbiam peccato contro il Signore: noi anderemo, e combatteremo, come ordinò il Signore Dio nostro. E mentre voi armati di tutto punto v'incamminavate verso il monte,	41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.
42 Il Signore mi disse: Fa' lor sapere, che non vadano e non combattano, perocché io non sono con essi, affinché non restino abbattuti appiè de' loro nemici.	42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."
43 Io parlai, e voi non mi ascoltaste: ma andando contro al comando del Signore, e gonfi di superbia saliste al monte.	43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.
44 Allora l’Amorrheo, che abitava nella montagna, vi venne incontro, e vi assaltò, come sogliono assaltare le api: e fece strage di voi da Seir fino ad Horma.	44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.
45 E al vostro ritorno piangendo voi dinanzi al Signore, egli non vi ascoltò, né volle esaudire le voci vostre.	45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.
46 Steste dunque a sedere per lungo tempo a Cadesbarne.	46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'
