1 Una molestia grande è destinata a tutti gli uomini, e un giogo pesante posa sopra i figliuoli di Adamo dal giorno, in cui escon dall'utero della madre fino al di della lor sepoltura nel seno della madre comune.	1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,
2 Le loro sollecitudini, i timori del cuore, le apprensioni di quel, che aspettano, e il di che tutto finisce:	2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--
3 Da colui, che è assiso sopra un seggio di gloria, fino a quello, che giace per terra, e sulla cenere:	3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,
4 Da colui, che veste l'iacinto, e porta corona, fino a quello, che è coperto di rozza tela di lino: il furore, la gelo sia, l'inquietezza, l'agitazione, il timor della morte, l'ira ostinata, e le risse,	4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--
5 Anche nel tempo di ristorarsi nel letto, il sonno della notte la immaginazione di lui perturba.	5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.
6 Poco, e quasi nulla ha di requie, e dipoi ne' suoi sogni, come quando uno sta di sentinella,	6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;
7 E turbato dalle visioni del suo spirito, e come chi fugge nel giorno della battaglia, si sveglia allorché è in salvo, e ammira il suo vano timore:	7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.
8 Così va per tutti gli animali dall'uomo fino alla bestia, ma sette volte peggio pei peccatori.	8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.
9 Oltre a ciò la morte, le uccisioni, la spada, le oppressioni, la fame, le rovine; i flagelli:	9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:
10 Tutte queste cose furon fatte per gli iniqui, e per essi venne il diluvio.	10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.
11 Tutto quel, che vien dalla terra torna nella terra, come tutte le acque ritornano al mare.	11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.
12 Tutte le largizioni, e le ingiustizie periranno; ma la rettitudine sussisterà per tutti i secoli.	12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.
13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si seccheranno come un torrente, e il loro fracasso è come di un gran tuono in tempo di pioggia.	13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,
14 Uno si allegrerà nell'aprire la mano; ma i prevaricatori alla fine anderanno in fumo.	14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.
15 I nipoti degli empj non moltiplicheranno i rami loro, e le radici immonde sulla cima di un masso fanno romore.	15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;
16 Come ogni erba verde in sito umido, e sul margine del fiume è spiantata prima d'ogni altra erba.	16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;
17 La benignità è come un giardino benedetto; e la misericordia non perisce giammai.	17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.
18 Dolce è la vita dell'operaio contento di sua sorte, e in essa egli troverà un tesoro.	18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.
19 Danno un nome di durata i figliuoli, e la fondazione di una città; ma a queste cose sarà preferita una moglie immacolata.	19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;
20 Il vino, e la musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più di ambedue que'ste cose l'amore della sapienza.	20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.
21 Il flauto, e il saltero fan soave concerto, ma l'un, e l'altro è superato da una lingua soave.	21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.
22 Piacerà al tuo occhio la venustà, o la bellezza, ma più di queste i verdeggianti seminati.	22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.
23 L'amico, e il compagno, che vengono opportunamente (son graditi), ina più dell'uno, e dell'altro una moglie unita col marito.	23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.
24 I fratelli sono un buon soccorso nel tempo di afflizione; ma la misericordia più di essi è atta a salvare.	24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.
25 L'oro, e l'argento tengono l'uomo in piedi, ma più di essi piace il buon consiglio.	25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.
26 Le ricchezze, e il valore ingrandiscono il cuore: ma più di queste cose il timor del Signore.	26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:
27 Non manca mai nulla al timore di Dio, e con esso non occorre cercar chi ajuti.	27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.
28 Il timor del Signore è come un giardino di benedizione, egli è ammantato di magnificenza, che ogni altra sorpassa.	28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;
29 Figliuolo, nel tempo di tua vita non ridurti in mendicità; perocché o meglio morire, che mendicare.	29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:
30 Un uomo, che ha l'occhio alla mensa altrui, non impiega sua vita a provvedere il suo vitto, perché si sostenta della pietanza d'un altro:	30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.
31 Ma un uomo ben educato, e saggio si guarderà da tal cosa.
32 Alla bocca dello stolto sarà dolce la mendicità, e nel ventre di lui arderà il fuoco.
