Lettera ai Galati 4

1 Or io dico: fino a tanto che l'erede è fanciullo, in nulla differisce dal servo, sebbene sia padrone di tutto,	1 But I say that, during the time an heir is a child, he is no different from a servant, even though he is the owner of everything.
2 ma rimane sotto i tutori e i procuratori fino al tempo presi abilito dal padre.	2 For he is under tutors and caretakers, until the time which was predetermined by the father.
3 Così anche noi, quando eravamo fanciulli, eravamo tenuti in schiavitù sotto gli elementi del mondo;	3 So also we, when we were children, were subservient to the influences of the world.
4 ma giunta la pienezza del tempo, Dio mandò il suo Figliolo, fatto di Donna, sottomesso alla legge,	4 But when the fullness of time arrived, God sent his Son, formed from a woman, formed under the law,
5 per redimere quelli che eran sotto la legge e per farci ricevere l'adozione di figlioli.	5 so that he might redeem those who were under the law, in order that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 E siccome siete figlioli, Dio ha infuso lo Spirito del suo Figliolo nei vostri cuori, che grida: Abba, Padre.	6 Therefore, because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying out: “Abba, Father.”
7 Dunque non sei più servo, ma figlio; e se figlio anche erede, per la grazia di Dio.	7 And so now he is not a servant, but a son. But if he is a son, then he is also an heir, through God.
8 In passato, non conoscendo Dio, voi eravate servi di coloro che in realtà non son dèi;	8 But then, certainly, while ignorant of God, you served those who, by nature, are not gods.
9 ma ora che avete conosciuto Dio, anzi siete stati conosciuti da Dio, perchè rivolgersi indietro a deboli e poveri elementi, e voler tornare a servirli?	9 But now, since you have known God, or rather, since you have been known by God: how can you turn away again, to weak and destitute influences, which you desire to serve anew?
10 Voi osservate giorni, mesi, stagioni ed anni.	10 You serve the days, and months, and times, and years.
11 Allora temo per voi d'essermi tra voi inutilmente affaticato.	11 I am afraid for you, lest perhaps I may have labored in vain among you.
12 Siate come me, ve ne scongiuro, o fratelli, giacché io sono come voi. Voi non mi avete fatto alcun torto;	12 Brothers, I beg you. Be as I am. For I, too, am like you. You have not injured me at all.
13 anzi, ben sapete che tra le afflizioni della carne vi annunziai il Vangelo, e che voi, non ostante la tentazione che avevo nella mia carne,	13 But you know that, in the weakness of the flesh, I have preached the Gospel to you for a long time, and that your trials are in my flesh.
14 non mi disprezzaste, non mi discacciaste; ma mi accoglieste come un angelo di Dio, come Cristo Gesù.	14 You did not despise or reject me. But instead, you accepted me like an Angel of God, even like Christ Jesus.
15 Or dove sono andati i vostri trasporti di gioia? Vi attesto che se fosse stato possibile, vi sareste levati gli occhi per darmeli.	15 Therefore, where is your happiness? For I offer to you testimony that, if it could be done, you would have plucked out your own eyes and would have given them to me.
16 Son dunque divenuto vostro nemico a dirvi la verità?	16 So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
17 Con malizia mostrano zelo verso di voi, per staccarvi da noi e legarvi a se stessi.	17 They are not imitating you well. And they are willing to exclude you, so that you might imitate them.
18 Ma voi zelate il bene per il bene, sempre, e non soltanto quando io sono presente in mezzo a voi.	18 But be imitators of what is good, always in a good way, and not only when I am present with you.
19 Figlioletti miei, che porto nuovamente nel mio seno, finché in voi non sia formato Cristo,	19 My little sons, I am giving birth to you again, until Christ is formed in you.
20 oh come vorrei esser ora presente fra voi e cambiar tono, essendo perplesso a vostro riguardo!	20 And I would willingly be present with you, even now. But I would alter my voice: for I am ashamed of you.
21 Ditemi, voi che volete essere sotto la legge, non l'avete letta la legge?	21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, have you not read the law?
22 Or sta scritto che Abramo ebbe due figlioli: uno dalla schiava e uno dalla libera,	22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: one by a servant woman, and one by a free woman.
23 e mentre quello della schiava nacque secondo la carne, quello della libera nacque in virtù della promessa.	23 And he who was of the servant was born according to the flesh. But he who was of the free woman was born by the promise.
24 Queste cose hanno un senso allegorico. Rappresentano le due alleanze: una del monte Sinai, che genera schiavi, e sarebbe Agar:	24 These things are said through an allegory. For these represent the two testaments. Certainly the one, on Mount Sinai, gives birth unto servitude, which is Hagar.
25 Infatti il Sinai è un monte dell'Arabia, ed ha molta relazione colla Gerusalemme attuale, che è schiava con i suoi figlioli.	25 For Sinai is a mountain in Arabia, which is related to the Jerusalem of the present time, and it serves with her sons.
26 Ma la Gerusalemme superiore è libera, essa è la nostra madre;	26 But that Jerusalem which is above is free; the same is our mother.
27 sta scritto infatti: Rallegrati, o sterile che non partorisci, prorompi in grida di gioia, tu che non divieni madre, perchè molti sono i figlioli dell'abbandonata, e più numerosi di quelli di colei che ha marito.	27 For it was written: “Rejoice, O barren one, though you do not conceive. Burst forth and cry out, though you do not give birth. For many are the children of the desolate, even more than of her who has a husband.”
28 Quanto a noi, o fratelli, siamo, come Isacco, figlioli della promessa;	28 Now we, brothers, like Isaac, are sons of the promise.
29 Come allora quello nato secondo la carne perseguitava colui che era nato secondo lo spirito, così pure succede ora.	29 But just as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
30 Ma che dice la Scrittura? Caccia la schiava e il suo figliolo, perchè non deve essere il figlio della schiava erede col figlio della libera.	30 And what does Scripture say? “Cast out the woman servant and her son. For the son of a servant women shall not be an heir with the son of a free woman.”
31 Pertanto, o fratelli, noi non siam figli della schiava, ma della libera, per quella libertà colla quale Cristo ci ha affrancati.	31 And so, brothers, we are not the sons of the servant woman, but rather of the free woman. And this is the freedom with which Christ has set us free.
