Prima lettera ai Corinzi 8

1 Riguardo poi alle cose consacrate agli idoli, noi sappiamo d'aver tutti della scienza. Ma la scienza gonfia, mentre la carità edifica.	1 Now about food which has been dedicated to false gods. We are wel aware that al of us haveknowledge; but while knowledge puffs up, love is what builds up.
2 Se uno poi crede di saper qualche cosa, egli non ha ancora capito come si deve sapere;	2 Someone may think that he has ful knowledge of something and yet not know it as wel as he should;
3 ma se uno ama Dio, egli è da Dio riconosciuto.	3 but someone who loves God is known by God.
4 A proposito dunque del mangiar le vivande consacrate agl'idoli, sappiam bene che l'idolo è un niente nel mondo, e non v'è che un Dio solo.	4 On the subject of eating foods dedicated to false gods, we are wel aware that none of the false godsexists in reality and that there is no God other than the One.
5 E se anche ci sono in cielo o in terra esseri chiamati dèi (e son molti i chiamati dèi e molti chiamati signori),	5 Though there are so-cal ed gods, in the heavens or on earth -- and there are plenty of gods and plentyof lords-
6 per noi non c'è che un solo Dio, il Padre, da cui vengono tutte ìe cose e nel quale siamo, e un solo Signore, Gesù Cristo, per cui son tutte le cose ed anche noi per lui.	6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father from whom al things come and for whom we exist, and oneLord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist.
7 Ma non tutti san bene questo. Anzi, alcuni, conservando ancora l'idea dell'idolo, mangiano le vivande come immolate agli idoli, e la loro coscienza, che è debole, ne rimane contaminata.	7 However, not everybody has this knowledge. There are some in whose consciences false gods stillplay such a part that they take the food as though it had been dedicated to a god; then their conscience, beingvulnerable, is defiled,
8 Non è il cibo che ci rende cari a Dio: se mangeremo, non avremo nulla di più, e se non mangeremo, nulla avremo di meno.	8 But of course food cannot make us acceptable to God; we lose nothing by not eating it, we gain nothingby eating it.
9 Ma badate che questa vostra libertà non divenga un inciampo per i deboli.	9 Only be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way turn into an obstacle to trip those whoare vulnerable.
10 Infatti se uno vede colui che sa come stanno le cose, a tavola nel luogo degli idoli, la sua coscienza, che è debole, non sarà persuasa a mangiare le cose immolate agli idoli?	10 Suppose someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some false god,do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be encouraged to eat foods dedicated to falsegods?
11 E perchè tu sai le cose come stanno, perirà il debole fratello per il quale Cristo è morto?	11 And then it would be through your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as heis, has been lost.
12 In tal guisa peccando contro i fratelli e offendendo la loro debole coscienza, voi peccate contro Cristo.	12 So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable consciences, you would be sinningagainst Christ.
13 Se dunque un cibo serve di scandalo al mio fratello, non mangerò carne in eterno, per non scandalizzare il mio fratello.	13 That is why, if food can be the cause of a brother's downfal , I wil never eat meat any more, ratherthan cause my brother's downfal .
