1 Demetrio, saputa la morte di Nicà­nore e la sconfitta del suo esercito, decisedi mandare di nuovo in Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, con l'ala destra del suo esercito.	1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.
2 Questi, presa la strada che mena a Gaigala, posero il campo a Masalot, in quel di Arbelle, che essi occuparono, uccidendo molta gente.	2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.
3 Il primo mese dell'anno centocinquantadue si avvicinarono coll'esercito a Gerusalemme,	3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;
4 e, levato il campo, andarono a Borea, con venti mila fanti e due mila cavalieri.	4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.
5 Giuda, con tre mila uomini scelti, aveva posto il campo a Laisa.	5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.
6 I suoi nel vedere la moltitudine di quell'esercito n'ebbero gran paura, e molti fuggirono dal campo, ove non restarono che ottocento soldati.	6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.
7 Giuda vedendo così assottigliato il suo esercito nell'imminenza della battaglia, senti serrarsi il cuore, perchè non v'era tempo di radunarli, e si scoraggi.	7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.
8 Ma poi disse a quelli che restarono: « Su via, andiamo incontro ai nostri nemici, e tentiamo la battaglia ».	8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'
9 Ma essi lo dissuadevano, col dire: « È impossibile: è meglio per ora mettersi in salvo, andare a trovare i nostri fratelli, e poi tornare a combattere contro costoro. Ora siam troppo pochi ».	9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'
10 Ma Giuda disse: « Lungi da noi il fuggire da loro: se è giunta l'ora nostra, moriamo da valorosi per i nostri fratelli, senza lasciare questa macchia alla nostra gloria ».	10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'
11 Mosso l'esercito dagli accampamenti, i nemici vennero loro incontro colla cavalleria divisa in due parti, coi frombolieri e gli arcieri alla testa dell'esercito, con tutta la gente di maggior valore nelle prime file.	11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;
12 Bacchide era nell'ala destra: le schiere si avvicinavano dai due lati al suono delle trombe.	12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,
13 Anche i soldati di Giuda alzarono le grida: la terra tremò al rumor degli eserciti, e cominciò la battaglia, che durò dalla mattina fino alla sera.	13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.
14 Giuda, avendo osservato che la parte più forte dell'esercito di Bacchide era l'ala destra, prese seco i più valorosi	14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,
15 e la sconfisse, inseguì il nemico fino al monte d'Azoto.	15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.
16 Ma quelli dell'ala sinistra, vedendo sconfitta l'ala destra, corsero dietro a Giuda e ai suoi e li presero alle spalle.	16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.
17 La battaglia divenne accanita: vi furono da ambo le parti gran numero di morti.	17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.
18 Morì anche Giuda e gli altri fuggirono.	18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.
19 Gionata e Simone, preso il cadavere di Giuda loro fratello, lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri nella città di Mondin.	19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.
20 E tutto il popolo d'Israele ne fece gran lutto, e lo pianse per molto tempo,	20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.
21 e dicevano: « Come mai è caduto l'eroe, il salvatore del popolo d'Israele? »	21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'
22 Tutte le altre guerre di Giuda, e gli: eroismi che fece e la sua grandezza non sono scritte, perchè troppo grande ne sarebbe il numero.	22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.
23 Dopo la morte di Giuda, gl'iniqui scapparon fuori in tutto il territorio d'Israele, e alzarono il capo tutti gli operatori; d'iniquità.	23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.
24 Essendoci stata in quel tempo grandissima fame, tutto il paese e gli abitanti si assoggettarono a Bacchide.	24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.
25 E Bacchide scelse gli uomini empii e li; pose al governo del paese.	25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.
26 E questi andavano a cercare e a scovare gli amici di; Giuda, e li portavano a Bacchide, che si vendicava sopra di loro e ne prendeva, gioco.	26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.
27 E grande fu la tribolazione in Israele, quale non ci fu mai dal tempo in cui non si vide più un profeta in Israele.	27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.
28 Allora si adunarono tutti gli amici dì Giuda e dissero a Gionata:	28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,
29 « Da che è morto tuo fratello Giuda, non si trova un uomo simile a lui, che possa combattere contro i nostri nemici, contro Bacchide e contro coloro che odiano la nostra nazione.	29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.
30 Or noi ti eleggiamo in questo giorno come principe in luogo di lui, e come dùce nelle nostre guerre ».	30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'
31 Allora Gionata accettò il principato, e successe a Giuda suofratello.	31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.
32 Bacchide, appena avutane la notizia, cercò di farlo uccidere.	32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.
33 Ma, accortisene Gionata, Simone suo fratello e tutti quelli che eran con lui, fuggirono nel deserto di Tecua, e si fermarono presso il lago di Asfar.	33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.
34 Bacchide ne fu informato, e in giorno di sabato col suo esercito andò di là dal Giordano.	34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)
35 E Gionata mandò suo fratello, capo del popolo, a pregare i Nabatei suoi amici, per affidar loro i propri bagagli, che eran imolti.	35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.
36 Ma i figli di lambri, usciti di Madaba, presero Giovanni con tutto quel che aveva, e se ne andarono colla preda.	36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.
37 Dopo tali cose fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello, che i figli di lambri celebravano delle nozze solenni, e conducevano con gran pompa da Madaba la sposa, la quale era figliola di uno dei più grandi principi di Canaan. 3	37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.
38 Allora, ricordandosi del sangue di Giovanni loro fratello, si mossero e si nascosero dietro un riparo del monte.	38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.
39 Alzati gli occhi osservarono, ed ecco gran movimento e numeroso corteo; lo sposo coi suoi amici e i suoi fratelli si avanzava incontro ad essi con timpani e strumenti musicali e molte armi.	39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.
40 Allora uscirono dall'imboscata e li assalirono e li uccisero: molti caddero feriti, il resto fuggì alla montagna, ed essi ne presero tutto le spoglie.	40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.
41 Così le nozze si cambiarono in lutto, e i suoni delle lor musiche in lamentazioni.	41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.
42 Ed essi, vendicato il sangue del loro fratello, tornarono verso le rive del Giordano.	42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.
43 Bacchide, avendo ciò risaputo, in giorno di sabato, con grande esercito, andò fino alle rive del Giordano.	43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.
44 Allora donata disse ai suoi: « Su via, combattiamo contro i nostri nemici, perchè noi non siamo nel caso di ieri e dei giorni precedenti:	44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.
45 abbiamo infatti di faccia in armi il nemico, di qua e di là le acque del Giordano, le rive, le paludi, le boscaglie; non c'è luogo di uscita.	45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.
46 Or dunque alzate le voci al cielo, per esser liberati dalle mani dei vostri nemici ». E si attaccò la battaglia.	46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'
47 Gionata stese la mano per colpire; Bacchide, ma questi lo schivò, tirandosi indietro.	47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,
48 E Gionata e i suoi saltarono nel Giordano, e lo passarono a nuoto sotto gli occhi dei nemici.	48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.
49 E dei soldati di Bacchide perirono in quel giorno mille uomini, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme.	49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.
50 E fecero delle piazze forti nella Giudea: le fortezze che erano in Gerico, in Ammaus, in Betoron, in Betel, in Tamnata, in Fara, in Topo, le munirono di alte mura, di porte e di sbarre.	50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,
51 E (Bacchide) vi mise dei presidii per rinnovare le ostilità contro Israele.	51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.
52 E fortificò la città di Betsura, e Gazara, e la cittadella, e vi pose dei presidii e depositi di viveri.	52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.
53 Presi poi in ostaggio i figli dei principali del paese, li tenne prigionieri nella cittadella di Gerusalemme.	53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.
54 Or nell'anno centocinquantatrè, nel secondo mese, Alcimo comandò di atterrare il muro della parte interiore della casa santa, e di distruggere le opere dei profeti, e cominciò a distruggere.	54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition
55 Ma in quel tempo Alcimo fu percosso (da Dio), e le sue imprese furono impedite; la sua bocca restò chiusa, fu tutto paralizzato, e non potè più dire una parola, nè dare alcun ordine riguardo alla sua casa.	55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;
56 E in quel tempo morì Aleimo, in mezzo a grandi tormenti.	56 it was not long before he died in great agony.
57 Visto che Alcimo era morto, Bacchide se ne tornò al re, e il paese stette in pace per due anni.	57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.
58 Allora tutti gl'iniqui pensarono e dissero: « Ecco Gionata e i suoi stanno tranquilli, senza alcun timore: or dunque facciamo venire Bacchide, e li prenderà tutti in una sola notte.	58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'
59 E andarono a dargli questo consiglio.	59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.
60 Ed egli si mise in marcia con grosso esercito, e scrisse segretamente ai suoi partigiani che erano nella Giudea, d'impadronirsi di Gionata e della sua gente; ma non poteron farlo, perchè i loro disegni furon da essi conosciuti.	60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,
61 E (Gionata) prese cinquanta uomini del paese, che erano stati a capo delle milizie e li fece morire.	61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.
62 Poi Gionata e Simone colla loro gente si ritirarono a Betbessen, che è nel deserto, ne ripararono le rovine e la fortificarono.	62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.
63 Bacchide, saputa la cosa, radunò tutte le sue truppe, e ne mandò avviso a quelli che erano nella Giudea.	63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.
64 E andò a porre il campo sopra Betbessen, e l'assediò per molti giorni, e fece le macchine.	64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.
65 Ma Gionata, lasciato nella città Simone suo fratello, so ne andò pel paese e tornò con un po' di gente.	65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.
66 E battè Odaren e i suoi fratelli, e i figli di Faseron nelle loro tende, e cominciò a fare strage e a crescere nelle forze.	66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.
67 Intanto Simone e la sua gente uscirono dalla città e die dero fuoco alle macchine.	67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.
68 Allora assalirono Bacchide e lo sconfissero e lo gettarono in profonda tristezza facendogli andare in fumo tutti i suoi disegni e i suoi tentativi.	68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,
69 Egli, sdegnato con quei malvagi che l'avevan consigliato ad andare nel loro paese, ne fece ammazzare molti, e poi decise di tornarsene col rimanente dei suoi nel suo paese.	69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.
70 Gionata, quando lo seppe, gli spedì ambasciatori per far pace con lui e riavere i prigionieri.	70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.
71 L'altro li accolse e ne accettò le proposte, e giurò di non fargli alcun male per tutto il tempo della sua vita,	71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.
72 e gli restituì i prigionieri che nel passato aveva fatti nel paese di Giuda, e parti, e se ne andò al suo paese, e non tornò mai più nella Giudea.	72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.
73 Così fini la guerra in Israele. Gionata fissò la sua dimora a Macmas, ed ivi cominciò a render giustizia al popolo, e fece sparire gli empi da Israele.	73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.
