1 Giuda sentì dire che i Romani eran potenti, che si prestavano a tutto quello che era loro domandato, e diventavano amici di tutti quelli che si rivolgevano a loro, che eran potentissimi.	1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.
2 Gli furono raccontate le loro guerre, le prodezze da loro fatte nella Galazia, che avevan sottomessa e resa tributaria;	2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.
3 e quanto avevan fatto nella Spagna, come s'erano impossessati delle miniere d'argento e d'oro, ed avevano sottomesso quel paese colla prudenza e colla pazienza;	3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,
4 e come avevan soggiogate nazioni da loro lontanissime, e sconfitti re che s'eran mossi contro di loro dall'estremità della terra; li avevano abbuttuti del tutto, e tutti gli altri pagavano loro l'annuo tributo;	4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.
5 e che avevan vinto e soggiogato Filippo e Perseo re dei Cetei, e gli altri che avevan prese le armi contro di loro;	5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.
6 e che Antioco il Grande, re d'Asia, venuto a battaglia contro di essi, con centoventi elefanti, e cavalieri e cocchi e grandissimo esercito, era stato da loro sconfitto,	6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.
7 e che, caduto vivo nelle loro mani, fu costretto a pagare, egli e i suoi successori nel regno, un forte tributo, e a dare, secondo i patti, gli ostaggi,	7 They had taken him alive and obliged him and the kings who succeeded him to pay a heavy tribute, to give hostages and a section of

Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.
11 e come avevan desolato e ridotto in loro potere gli altri regni e le isole che una volta avevan loro resistito;	11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;
12 ma che coi loro amici e con quelli che confidavano in loro conservavano l'amicizia; e che si erano impadroniti dei regni vicini e dei lontani, perchè tutti quelli che sentivan il loro nome ne avevan paura;	12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.
13 che regnavano quelli ai quali volevano dare aiuto, perchè giungessero al regno, e scacciavan dal trono quelli che volevano; e che avevan grandissima potenza;	13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.
14 e che, non ostante tutto questo, nessuno portava diadema, nè si vestiva di porpora per grandeggiare;	14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.
15 e che avevan formato un senato, e ogni giorno consultavano trecentoventi persone, che deliberavano negli affari del popolo, per far quello che era conveniente;	15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.
16 e che ogni anno conferiscono la loro magistratura ad un sol uomo, il comando su tutte le loro terre, e che tutti obbediscono a uno solo, e che tra loro non c'è nè invidia nè gelosia.	16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.
17 Allora Giuda elesse Eupolerno, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Giacobbe, e Giasone, figlio di Eleazaro, e li mandò a Roma, per fare con essi amicizia e alleanza,	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.
18 affinché i Romani li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci che, come vedevano, riducevano in schiavitù il regno d'Israele.	18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.
19 Essi adunque andarono a Roma. Dopo lungo viaggio entrarono nella curia, e dissero:	19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:
20 « Giuda, Maccabeo, i suoi fratelli e il popolo Giudeo ci hanno mandati a voi a stabilire con voi alleanza e pace, affinchè ci ascriviate fra i vostri alleati e amici ».	20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."
21 La richiesta fu accolta favorevolmente.	21 The proposal pleased the Romans,
22 Ed ecco il rescritto che fu inciso in tavole di bronzo e mandato a Gerusalemme, affinchè ivi fosse per i Giudei un memoriale di questa pace e alleanza:	22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:
23 « Prosperità ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, sul mare e sulla terra in eterno! Lungi da loro la spada e il nemico!	23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.
24 Se i Romani o qualcuno dei loro confederati, in tutto il loro dominio, si troveranno per i primi in guerra,	24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,
25 la nazione dei Giudei darà loro, di tutto cuore e secondo le circostanze, aiuto,	25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;
26 senza ricevere per i combattenti nè armi, nè danaro, nè navi, secondo la volontà dei Romani: obbediranno senza ricever nulla.	26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.
27 Parimente, se avverrà che la nazione dei Giudei sia la prima ad essere in guerra, i Romani Valuteranno con tutto l'animo, come lo permetteranno le circostanze,	27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,
28 senza ricevere per l'aiuto, grano, armi, danaro, navi, secondo la volontà dei Romani, che obbediranno senza frode.	28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.
29 Questo è il patto dei Romani coi Giudei.	29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.
30 Se poi in seguito o gli uni o gli altri volessero aggiungerne o levarne qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo, e allora sarà obbligatorio l'aggiunto e il levato ».	30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.
31 In quanto poi ai mali fatti loro dal re Demetrio, gli abbiamo scritto in questi termini: « Perchè hai reso pesante il tuo giogo sopra i Giudei nostri amici e alleati?	31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?
32 Se un'altra volta ricorreranno a noi contro di te, noi sosterremo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per terra e per mare ».	32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"
