Primo libro dei Maccabei 8

1 Giuda sentì dire che i Romani eran potenti, che si prestavano a tutto quello che era loro domandato, e diventavano amici di tutti quelli che si rivolgevano a loro, che eran potentissimi.	1 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they are powerful and strong, and willingly agree to all things that are requested of them: and that whosoever have come to them, they have made amity with them, and that they are mighty in power.
2 Gli furono raccontate le loro guerre, le prodezze da loro fatte nella Galazia, che avevan sottomessa e resa tributaria;	2 And they heard of their battles, and their noble acts, which they had done in Galatia, how they conquered them, and brought them under tribute:
3 e quanto avevan fatto nella Spagna, come s'erano impossessati delle miniere d'argento e d'oro, ed avevano sottomesso quel paese colla prudenza e colla pazienza;	3 And how great things they had done in the land of Spain, and that they had brought under their power the mines of silver and of gold that are there, and had gotten possession of all the place by their counsel and patience:
4 e come avevan soggiogate nazioni da loro lontanissime, e sconfitti re che s'eran mossi contro di loro dall'estremità della terra; li avevano abbuttuti del tutto, e tutti gli altri pagavano loro l'annuo tributo;	4 And had conquered places that were very far off from them, and kings that came against them from the ends of the earth, and had overthrown them with great slaughter: and the rest pay them tribute every year.
5 e che avevan vinto e soggiogato Filippo e Perseo re dei Cetei, e gli altri che avevan prese le armi contro di loro;	5 And that they had defeated in battle Philip, and Perses the king of the Ceteans, and the rest that had borne arms against them, and had conquered them:
6 e che Antioco il Grande, re d'Asia, venuto a battaglia contro di essi, con centoventi elefanti, e cavalieri e cocchi e grandissimo esercito, era stato da loro sconfitto,	6 And how Antiochus the great king of Asia, who went to fight against them, having a hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was routed by them:
7 e che, caduto vivo nelle loro mani, fu costretto a pagare, egli e i suoi successori nel regno, un forte tributo, e a dare, secondo i patti, gli ostaggi,	7 And how they took him alive, and appointed to him, that both he and they that should reign after him, should pay a great tribute, and that he should give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,
8 e il paese degli Indiani, e la Media, e la Lidia, ottime provinole che essi presero e dettero al re Eumene.	8 And the country of the Indians, and of the Medes, and of the Lydians, some of their best provinces: and those which they had taken from them they gave to king Eumenes.
9 (Gli fu raccontato) come quelli della Grecia avessero fatto disegno di andare ad abbatterli, ma che essi lo seppero,	9 And that they who were in Greece had a mind to go and to destroy them: and they had knowledge thereof,
10 mandato contro di essi un solo generale, li combatterono, ne uccisero in gran numero, e menarono in schiavitù le loro mogli e i loro figli, saccheggiarono i loro beni, s'impadronirono delle loro terre, abbatterono le loro mura, e li ridussero in servitù, come sono al presente;	10 And they sent a general against them, and fought with them, and many of them were slain, and they carried away their wives and their children captives, and spoiled them, and took possession of their land, and threw down their walls, and brought them to be their servants unto this day.
11 e come avevan desolato e ridotto in loro potere gli altri regni e le isole che una volta avevan loro resistito;	11 And the other kingdoms, and islands, that at any time had resisted them, they had destroyed and brought under their power.
12 ma che coi loro amici e con quelli che confidavano in loro conservavano l'amicizia; e che si erano impadroniti dei regni vicini e dei lontani, perchè tutti quelli che sentivan il loro nome ne avevan paura;	12 But with their friends, and such as relied upon them, they kept amity, and had conquered kingdoms that were near, and that were far off: for all that heard their name, were afraid of them.
13 che regnavano quelli ai quali volevano dare aiuto, perchè giungessero al regno, e scacciavan dal trono quelli che volevano; e che avevan grandissima potenza;	13 That whom they had a mind to help to a kingdom, those reigned: and whom they would, they deposed from a kingdom: and they were greatly exalted.
14 e che, non ostante tutto questo, nessuno portava diadema, nè si vestiva di porpora per grandeggiare;	14 And none of all these wore a crown, or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby.
15 e che avevan formato un senato, e ogni giorno consultavano trecentoventi persone, che deliberavano negli affari del popolo, per far quello che era conveniente;	15 And that they made themselves a senate house, and consulted daily three hundred and twenty men, that sat in council always for the people, that they might do the things that were right.
16 e che ogni anno conferiscono la loro magistratura ad un sol uomo, il comando su tutte le loro terre, e che tutti obbediscono a uno solo, e che tra loro non c'è nè invidia nè gelosia.	16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, to rule over all their country, and they all obey one, and there is no envy, nor jealousy amongst them.
17 Allora Giuda elesse Eupolerno, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Giacobbe, e Giasone, figlio di Eleazaro, e li mandò a Roma, per fare con essi amicizia e alleanza,	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Jacob, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and he sent them to Rome to make a league of amity and confederacy with them.
18 affinché i Romani li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci che, come vedevano, riducevano in schiavitù il regno d'Israele.	18 And that they might take off from them the yoke of the Grecians, for they saw that they oppressed the kingdom of Israel with servitude.
19 Essi adunque andarono a Roma. Dopo lungo viaggio entrarono nella curia, e dissero:	19 And they went to Rome, a very long journey, and they entered into the senate house, and said:
20 « Giuda, Maccabeo, i suoi fratelli e il popolo Giudeo ci hanno mandati a voi a stabilire con voi alleanza e pace, affinchè ci ascriviate fra i vostri alleati e amici ».	20 Judas Machabeus, and his brethren, and the people of the Jews have sent us to you, to make alliance and peace with you, and that we may be registered your confederates and friends.
21 La richiesta fu accolta favorevolmente.	21 And the proposal was pleasing in their sight.
22 Ed ecco il rescritto che fu inciso in tavole di bronzo e mandato a Gerusalemme, affinchè ivi fosse per i Giudei un memoriale di questa pace e alleanza:	22 And this is the copy of the writing that they wrote back again, graven in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that it might be with them there for a memorial of the peace and alliance.
23 « Prosperità ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, sul mare e sulla terra in eterno! Lungi da loro la spada e il nemico!	23 GOOD SUCCESS BE TO THE ROMANS, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: and far be the sword and enemy from them.
24 Se i Romani o qualcuno dei loro confederati, in tutto il loro dominio, si troveranno per i primi in guerra,	24 But if there come first any war upon the Romans, or any of their confederates, in all their dominions:
25 la nazione dei Giudei darà loro, di tutto cuore e secondo le circostanze, aiuto,	25 The nation of the Jews shall help them according as the time shall direct, with all their heart:
26 senza ricevere per i combattenti nè armi, nè danaro, nè navi, secondo la volontà dei Romani: obbediranno senza ricever nulla.	26 Neither shall they give them, whilst they are fighting, or furnish them with wheat, or arms, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans: and they shall obey their orders, without taking any thing of them.
27 Parimente, se avverrà che la nazione dei Giudei sia la prima ad essere in guerra, i Romani Valuteranno con tutto l'animo, come lo permetteranno le circostanze,	27 In like manner also if war shall come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall permit them.
28 senza ricevere per l'aiuto, grano, armi, danaro, navi, secondo la volontà dei Romani, che obbediranno senza frode.	28 And there shall not be given to them that come to their aid, either wheat, or arms, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans: and they shall observe their orders without deceit.
29 Questo è il patto dei Romani coi Giudei.	29 According to these articles did the Romans covenant with the people of the Jews.
30 Se poi in seguito o gli uni o gli altri volessero aggiungerne o levarne qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo, e allora sarà obbligatorio l'aggiunto e il levato ».	30 And if after this one party or the other shall have a mind to add to these articles, or take away anything, they may do it at their pleasure: and whatsoever they shall add, or take away, shall be ratified.
31 In quanto poi ai mali fatti loro dal re Demetrio, gli abbiamo scritto in questi termini: « Perchè hai reso pesante il tuo giogo sopra i Giudei nostri amici e alleati?	31 Moreover concerning the evils that Demetrius the king hath done against them, we have written to him, saying: Why hast thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends, and allies, the Jews?
32 Se un'altra volta ricorreranno a noi contro di te, noi sosterremo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per terra e per mare ».	32 If therefore they come again to us complaining of thee, we will do them justice, and will make war against thee by sea and land.
