1 Gorgia, presi seco cinquemila fanti e mille cavalieri scelti, si mosse di notte,	1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight
2 per avvicinarsi al campo dei Giudei, assalirli all'improvviso, mentre quelli della fortezza facevano loro da guida.	2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.
3 Ma Giuda, appena lo seppe, si mosse coi più valorosi, per assalire il grosso dell'esercito del re, che era in Einmaus,	3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,
4 giacché tal esercito era ancora sparpagliato fuori degli alloggiamenti.	4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.
5 Gorgia, giunto di notte agli accampamenti di Giuda o non trovandoci nessuno, li andò a cercare per i monti, dicendo: « Ci fuggono ».	5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'
6 Ma, fattosi giorno, Giuda comparve nella pianura con tre mila fanti, soli e privi di scudo e di spada.	6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.
7 Essi stavano a guardare il formidabile accampamento delle genti, circondato di corazzieri e di cavalieri addestrati alla battaglia;	7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.
8 ma Giuda disse ai suoi: « non vi spaventi il loro numero, non abbiate paura del loro attacco.	8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.
9 Ricordate come i nostri padri furon salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando Faraone l'inseguiva con grande esercito.	9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.
10 Or dunque alziamo la voce al cielo, e il Signore avrà pietà di noi, e, ricordandosi dell'alleanza fatta coi padri nostri, oggi distruggerà dinanzi a noi quest'esercito,	10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;
11 e tutte le genti conosceranno che vi è un Salvatore che libera Israele ».	11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'
12 Gli stranieri, alzati gli occhi, e veduti i Giudei che andavano verso di loro,	12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,
13 usciron fuori dagli accampamenti, per combattere, mentre quelli che eran con Giuda davan fiato alle trombe.	13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet
14 Appiccatasi la battaglia, le genti furon messe in rotta e fuggirono per le campagne;	14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain
15 però gli ultimi restarono sotto la spada, essendo inseguiti fino a Gezeron, fino alle campagne d'Idumea, d'Azoto e di Iamnia: ne morirono circa tre mila.	15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.
16 Ma Giuda tornò indietro coll'esercito cho lo seguiva,	16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men
17 e disse alla sua gente: « Non vi fermate per la preda, perchè la guerra non è finita,	17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.
18 e Gorgia col suo esercito è nella montagna vicino a noi: orsù a combattere contro i nostri nemici, a vincerli, o dopo tranquillamente alla preda ».	18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'
19 Giuda parlava ancora, quand'ecco apparire una divisione che scendeva del monte.	19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.
20 Allora Gorgia s'accorse che i suoi erano stati messi in fuga e che n'erano stati incendiati gli accampamenti, perchè il fumo che si vedeva manifestava quanto era accaduto.	20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-
21 A tal vista i suoi furono presi dallo spavento; mirando poi come Giuda stesse nella pianura col suo esercito pronto alla battaglia,	21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,
22 fuggiron tutti nel paese degli stranieri.	22 they al fled into Philistine territory.
23 Allora Giuda tornò a saccheggiare gli accampamenti, dove presero molto oro, argento, giacinto, porpora di mare e grandi ricchezze.	23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.
24 Ritornando cantavano l'inno, benedicendo ad alta voce Dio, « perchè è buono, perchè la sua misericordia è eterna ».	24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'
25 In quel giorno Israele ebbe una grande vittoria liberatrice.	25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.
26 Or tutti gli stranieri scampati andarono a raccontare a Lisia quanto era accaduto.	26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.
27 A queste notizie egli restò coster­nato e abbattuto, perchè non era avvenuto a Israele secondo i suoi desideri e gli ordini del re.	27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.
28 L'anno seguente, Lisia mise insieme un esercito di sessanta mila uomini scelti e di cinque mila cavalieri per debellare i Giudei.	28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.
29 Entrati in Giudea, s'accamparono vicino a Botoron. Giuda andò loro incontro con dieci mila uomini.	29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.
30 Alla vista di esercito sì formidavile pregò e disse: «Tu sei benedetto, o Salvatore d'Israele, che abbattesti la forza d'un gigante per mezzo di David tuo servo, e desti in potere di Gionata, figlio di Saul, e del suo scudiere gli accampamenti degli stranieri;	30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.
31 or dà quest'esercito in potere del tuo popolo d'Israele, e il numero delle loro schiere o dei cavalieri ridondi a loro confusione.	31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.
32 Fa piombare su di loro lo spavento, togli loro l'ardire e la forza, e siano travolti nella loro rovina.	32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.
33 Atterrali colla spada di coloro che ti amano, in modo che ti cantino inni di lode tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome.	33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'
34 Attaccata la battaglia, dell'esercito di Lisia perirono cinque mila uomini.	34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.
35 Lisia, veduta la fuga dei suoi e l'ardire dei Giudei, e come eran disposti a vivere e a morire da forti, se ne tornò ad Antiochia, a radunar soldati, per tornare di nuovo nella Giudea con forze maggiori.	35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.
36 Allora Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: « Or che i nostri nemici sono sbaragliati, andiamo a parificare o a riconsacrare il tempio.	36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'
37 Radunato tutto l'esercito, salirono al monto di Sion.	37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.
38 Vedendo il santuario deserto, l'altare profanato, le porte bruciate, i virgulti cresciuti nei cortili come in un bosco e per i monti, o gli appartamenti rovinati,	38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.
39 si stracciarono le vesti, fecero gran lutto, si gettarono la cenere sopra la testa,	39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.
40 si prostrarono bocconi per terra, diedero fiato alle trombe dei segnali, e alzarono la voce al cielo.	40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.
41 Giuda ordinò a una porte delle truppe di combatterò contro quelli che erano nella fortezza, finché non fosse purificato il santuario;	41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.
42 poi elesse dei sacerdoti senza macchia, attaccati alla legge di Dio.	42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law
43 Questi purificarono il santuario e portarono in luogo profano le pietre contaminate.	43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.
44 Tenuto consiglio sul da farsi riguardo all'altare degli olocausti che era stato profanato,	44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,
45 ebbero la felice idea di distruggerlo, affinchè loro non fosse d'obbrobrio, avendolo le genti contaminato; e lo demolirono.	45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it
46 Ammassatene le pietre sul monte del tempio, in luogo conveniente, finché non fosse venuto un profeta a decidere il da farsi,	46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.
47 presero delle pietre gregge, secondo la legge, ed eressero un nuovo altare simile a quello di prima.	47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.
48 Restaurato il santuario e quello che era nell'interno della casa, santificarono la casa e l'atrio,	48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.
49 fecero din nuovi vasi sacri, portarono nel tempio il candelabro, l'altare degli incensi e la mensa.	49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.
50 Fecero fumar l'incenso sopra l'altare, accesero le lucerne del candelabro, e illuminarono il tempio.	50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.
51 Posero i pani sopra la mensa, attaccarono i veli. Compite tutte le cose che avevan prese a fare,	51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.
52 levatisi di gran mattino, ai venticinque del nono mese (cioè del mese di Casleu) dell'anno centoquarantotto,	52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn
53 offersero il sacrifizio, secondo la legge, sopra l'altare degli olocausti da essi di nuovo eretto.	53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.
54 Questo fu dedicato al suono dei cantici, delle cetre, delle lire, dei cembali, nello stesso mese e giorno in cui era stato profanato dalle nazioni.	54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.
55 Tutto il popolo si prostrò bocconi per terra, e adorarono e benedissero fino al cielo colui che aveva loro data tale felicità.	55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.
56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, offrendo olocausti con gioia e sacrifizi di ringraziamento e di lode.	56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.
57 Adornarono la facciata del tempio di corone d'oro e di scudi, e dedicarono le porte e gli appartamenti ai quali misero le porte.	57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.
58 Il popolo fu in grandissima gioia, e scosse l'obbrobrio delle nazioni.	58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.
59 Giuda coi suoi fratelli e con tutta l'assemblea di Israele ordinò che si celebrasse il giorno della dedicazione dell'altare nel tempo stabilito, d'anno in anno, per otto giorni, da cominciarsi il venticinque di Casleu, con festa e gioia.	59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.
60 In quel tempo fortificarono il monte Sion, cingendolo all'intorno di alte muraglie e di forti torri, affinchè le genti non potessero venire a conculcarlo, come avevan fatto per l'addietro.	60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.
61 (Giuda) vi pose un corpo di guardia, e lo fortificò per sicurezza di Betsura, affinchè il popolo avesse questa fortezza in faccia all'Idumea.	61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.
