1 Or Gionata, vedendo che le circostanze erano favorevoli, scelse degli uomini, e li mandò a Roma a stabilire e rinnovaare l'amicizia coi Romani.	1 And Jonathan saw that the time served him, and he chose certain men and sent them to Rome, to confirm and to renew the amity with them:
2 Ed anche agli partani e in altri luoghi scrisse lettere della medesima forma.	2 And he sent letters to the Spartans, and to other places according to the same form.
3 E andarono a Roma, e, entrati nella curia, dissero: « Gionata, sommo sacerdote, e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno mandati a rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza come pel passato ».	3 And they went to Rome, and entered into the senate house, and said: Jonathan the high priest, and the nation of the Jews have sent us to renew the amity, and alliance as it was before.
4 E (i Romani) diedero a loro lettere (per le autorità romane) dei luoghi, affinchè li facessero ricondurre in pace nella terra di Giuda.	4 And they gave them letters to their governors in every place, to conduct them into the land of Juda with peace.
5 Ecco la copia della lettera che Gionata scrisse agli Spartani:	5 And this is a copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 « Gionata, sommo sacerdote, e gli anziani della nazione, e i sacerdoti, e il resto del popolo dei Giudei, agli Spartani, loro fratelli, salute.	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the ancients of the nation, and the priests, and the rest of the people of the Jews, to the Spartans, their brethren, greeting.
7 Di già, nel tempo passato, da Ario, che regnava fra di voi, fu mandata una lettera ad Onia sommo sacerdote, nella quale si diceva che voi siete nostri fratelli, come è nella copia che sotto si riferisce.	7 There were letters sent long ago to Onias the high priest from Arius who reigned then among you, to signify that you are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 E Onia accolse con onore l'uomo che era stato inviato, e accettò le lettere nelle quali si dichiarava di fare alleanza e amicizia.	8 And Onias received the ambassador with honour: and received the letters wherein there was mention made of the alliance, and amity.
9 Or noi, pur non avendo bisogno di queste cose, perchè abbiamo per nostra consolazione i libri santi, che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 We, though we needed none of these things, having for our comfort the holy books that are in our hands,
10 abbiamo scelto di mandare a voi per rinnovare la fraternità e l'amicizia, affinchè non ci avvenga di diventare stranieri per voi, essendo passato molto tempo da che voi mandaste a noi.	10 Chose rather to send to you to renew the brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers to you altogether: for there is a long time passed since you sent to us.
11 Noi dunque, in tutti i tempi, continuamente, nei giorni solenni e negli altri di dovere, ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacrifizi che offriamo, e nelle preghiere, come è giusto e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our festivals, and other days, wherein it is convenient, remember you in the sacrifices that we offer, and in our observances, as it is meet, and becoming to remember brethren.
12 Noi ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.	12 And we rejoice at your glory.
13 A noi invece son venute addosso molte tribolazioni e molte guerre, e i re che ci circondano hanno combattuto contro di noi.	13 But we have had many troubles and wars on every side, and the kings that are round about us, have fought against us.
14 Ma noi in queste guerre non abbiamo voluto esser di peso, nè ai nostri alleati nè ai nostri amici.	14 But we would not be troublesome to you, nor the rest of our allies and friends in these wars.
15 Abbiamo però avuto l'aiuto del cielo, e noi siamo stati liberati, e i nostri nemici sono stati umiliati.	15 For we have had help from heaven, and we have been delivered, and our enemies are humbled.
16 Ma, avendo noi eletto Numenio, figlio di Antioco, e Antipatro, figlio di Giasone, per mandarli ai Romani, a rinnovar con essi l'amicizia e l'antica alleanza,	16 We have chosen therefore Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to the Romans to renew with them the former amity and alliance.
17 abbiamo ordinato ad essi di venire anche da voi, a salutarvi e a darvi questa nostra lettera che ha per scopo di rinnovare la nostra fratellanza.	17 And we have commanded them to go also to you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters, concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 E voi farete bene a risponderci riguardo a queste cose.	18 And now you shall do well to give us an answer hereto.
19 Ecco la copia della lettera scritta ad Onia:	19 And this is the copy of the letter which he had sent to Onias:
20 « Ario, re degli Spartani, ad Onia, i sommo sacerdote, salute.	20 Arius king of the Spartans to Onias the high priest, greeting.
21 S'è trovato, in uno scritto sugli Spartani e i Giudei, che sono fratelli, e che sono della stirpe d'Abrarno.	21 It is found in writing concerning the Spartans, and the Jews, that they are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham.
22 Ed ora, giacché sappiamo questa cosa, fate bene a scriverci riguardo alla vostra pace.	22 And now since this is come to our knowledge, you do well to write to us of your prosperity.
23 E noi pure scriviamo a voi: I nostri bestiami e i nostri possessi son vostri, e ciò che è vostro è nostro. Abbiamo mandato coll'incombenza di farvi sapere queste cose ».	23 And we also have written back to you: That our cattle, and our possessions are yours: and yours, ours. We therefore have commanded that these things should be told you.
24 Or Gionata, saputo che i generali di Demetrio erano tornati con eserciti più numerosi di quelli di prima, per combattere contro di lui,	24 Now Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come again with a greater army than before to fight against him.
25 partì da Gerusalemme e andò a incontrarli nel paese di Emat, non dando loro il tempo d'entrare nella sua terra.	25 So he went out from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amath: for he gave them no time to enter into his country.
26 E, mandate delle spie nel loro campo, queste tornarono a riferire che essi risolvevano di piombare addosso a loro nella notte.	26 And he sent spies into their camp, and they came back and brought him word that they designed to come upon them in the night.
27 Allora, dopo il tramonto del sole, Gionata ordinò ai suoi di vegliare, e di stare in armi e in ordine di battaglia tutta la notte, e pose delle sentinelle intorno agli accampamenti.	27 And when the sun was set, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms all night long ready to fight, and he set sentinels round about the camp.
28 Ma i nemici, avendo saputo che Gionata era colla sua gente in ordine di battaglia, s'impaurirono, si persero di coraggio, e accesero dei fuochi nel loro campo ( e fuggirono).	28 And the enemies heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, and they were struck with fear, and dread in their heart: and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Gionata e i suoi non si accorsero del fatto sino alla mattina, perchè vedevano quei fuochi accesi.	29 But Jonathan and they that were with him knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Gionata li inseguì, ma non li potè raggiungere, perchè avevan passato il fiume Eleutero.	30 And Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they had passed the river Eleutherus.
31 Allora Gionata piegò verso gli Arabi detti Zabadei, e li battè e ne prese le spoglie.	31 And Jonathan turned upon the Arabians that are called Zabadeans: and he defeated them, and took the spoils of them.
32 Poi, riuniti i suoi, andò a Damasco e scorse tutta quella contrada.	32 And he went forward, and came to Damascus, and passed through all that country.
33 Simone, invece, partì e andò fino ad Ascalona ed ai vicini presidii, poi, voltatosi verso loppe, la occupò;	33 Simon also went forth, and came as far as Ascalon, and the neighbouring fortresses, and he turned aside to Joppe, and took possession of it,
34 e siccome aveva sentito dire che volevano dare la fortezza alla gente di Demetrio, vi pose delle milizie a custodirla.	34 (For he heard that they designed to deliver the hold to them that took part with Demetrius,) and he put a garrison there to keep it.
35 Al suo ritorno, Gionata convocò gli anziani del popolo e con essi decise di fabbricare delle fortezze nella Giudea;	35 And Jonathan came back, and called together the ancients of the people, and he took a resolution with them to build fortresses in Judea,
36 di riedificare le mura di Gerusalemme, di alzare un muro altissimo tra la cittadella e la città, di separar la prima dalla città, in modo che restasse isolata, e non vi si potesse nè comprare nè vendere.	36 And to build up walls in Jerusalem, and raise a mount between the castle and the city, to separate it from the city, that so it might have no communication, and that they might neither buy nor sell.
37 E si radunò la gente per edificare la città, ed essendo caduta la muraglia che era sopra il torrente dalla parte di levante, egli riparò il muro, che si chiama Cafeteta.	37 And they came together to build up the city: for the wall that was upon the brook towards the east was broken down, and he repaired that which is called Caphetetha:
38 E Simone fabbricò Adiada in Sefela, e la fortificò, e vi pose le porte e le sbarre.	38 And Simon built Adiada in Sephela, and fortified it, and set up gates and bars.
39 Trifone avendo disegnato di farsi re d'Asia, di prendere il diadema e di mettere le mani addosso al re Antioco,	39 Now when Tryphon had conceived a design to make himself king of Asia, and to take the crown, and to stretch out his hand against king Antiochus:
40 temendo che Gionata non solo non glielo permettesse, ma anzi gli facesse guerra, cercava di averlo nelle mani per ucciderlo e per questo si mosse e andò a Betsan.	40 Fearing lest Jonathan would not suffer him, but would fight against him: he sought to seize upon him, and to kill him. So he rose up and came to Bethsan.
41 Gionata gli andò contro con quarantamila guerrieri scelti, e giunse a Betsan.	41 And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 Visto che Gionata era venuto con grande esercito per assalirlo, Trifone ne ebbe paura,	42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with a great army, he durst not stretch forth his hand against him,
43 e lo accolse con onore, lo raccomandò a tutti i suoi amici, gli fece dei regali, e ordinò ai suoi eserciti che gli obbedissero come a se stesso.	43 But received him with honour, and commended him to all his friends, and gave him presents: and he commanded his troops to obey him, as himself.
44 Poi disse a Gionata: « Perchè hai incomodato tutto il popolo, non essendovi guerra tra noi?	44 And he said to Jonathan: Why hast thou troubled all the people, whereas we have no war?
45 Rimandali dunque alle loro case, e, scelto un piccolo numero d'uomini che t'accompagnino, vieni meco a Tolemaide, che te la consegnerò, come tutte le altre fortezze, e l'esercito e gli ufficiali del re, e poi me ne andrò, essendo venuto appunto per questo ».	45 Now therefore send them back to their own houses: and choose thee a few men that may be with thee, and come with me to Ptolemais, and I will deliver it to thee, and the rest of the strong holds, and the army, and all that have any charge, and I will return and go away: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 Gionata, prestandogli fede, fece secondo i suoi consigli, e, licenziate le truppe, che se ne tornarono nel paese di Giuda,	46 And Jonathan believed him, and did as he said: and sent away his army, and they departed into the land of Juda:
47 ritenne seco tre mila uomini, dei quali, avendone rimandati due mila in Galilea, ne andarono con lui soltanto mille.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men: of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 Ma appena Gionata ebbe messo il piede in Tolemaide, gli abitanti ne chiusero le porte, lo fecero prigioniero ed uccisero tutti quelli che erano entrati con lui.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates of the city, and took him: and all them that came in with him they slew with the sword.
49 Nel medesimo tempo Trifone mandò l'esercito e la cavalleria in Galilea e nella gran pianura, per sterminale tutta la gente di Gionata.	49 Then Tryphon sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Ma questi, saputo che Gionata, era stato preso e messo a morte con tutti quelli che eran con lui, esortarono l'un l'altro e si presentarono pronti a combattere.	50 But they, when they understood that Jonathan and all that were with him were taken and slain, encouraged one another, and went out ready for battle.
51 E quelli che erano andati a cercarli, vedendoli disposti a difendersi, tornarono indietro;	51 Then they that had come after them, seeing that they stood for their lives, returned back.
52 così essi tornarono sani e salvi nella Giudea, e piansero grandemente Gionata e i suoi compagni, e Israele ne fece gran lutto.	52 Whereupon they all came peaceably into the land of Juda. And they bewailed Jonathan, and them that had been with him, exceedingly: and Israel mourned with great lamentation.
53 Allora tutte le nazioni circonvicine cercarono di schiacciarli, dicendo:	53 Then all the heathens that were round about them, sought to destroy them. For they said:
54 « Son restati senza duce e senza aiuto: or dunque sterminiamoli in modo che sparisca il loro nome dalla memoria degli uomini ».	54 They have no prince, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away the memory of them from amongst mem.
