| 3 Giosafat, sbigottito, si rivolse tutto a pregare il Signore, e bandi un digiuno a tutto Giuda. | 3 Then Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. |
| 4 Giuda si radunò per invocare il Signore, e tutti dalle loro città vennero a supplicarlo. | 4 And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. |
| 5 Allora Giosafat. stando in piedi in mezzo all'adunanza di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa del Signore, dinanzi al nuovo atrio, | 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, |
| 6 disse: «Signore Dio dei padri nostri, tu sei Dio nel cielo, tu domini tutti i regni delle nazioni; nelle tue mani è la forza e la potenza e nessuno può resistere a te. | 6 and said, "O LORD, God of our fathers, art thou not God in heaven? Dost thou not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In thy hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. |
| 7 Non sei tu, o Signore nostro, quello che sterminasti tutti gli abitatori di questa terra dinanzi al tuo popolo Israele e la donasti per sempre alla stirpe del tuo amico Abramo? | 7 Didst thou not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it for ever to the descendants of Abraham thy friend? |
| 8 Or essi vi stanno ed hanno edificato un santuario al tuo nome, dicendo: | 8 And they have dwelt in it, and have built thee in it a sanctuary for thy name, saying, |
| 9 Dato che vengano sopra di noi sciagure, spada punitrice, pestilenza o faine, noi ci presenteremo al tuo cospetto, dinanzi a questa casa nella quale fu invocato il tuo nome; grideremo a te nelle nostre tribolazioni, e tu ci esaudirai, ci salverai. | 9 'If evil comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, for thy name is in this house, and cry to thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save.' |
| 10 Or ecco i figli d'Ammon, di Moab e del monte di Seir, sulle terre dei quali non permettesti a Israele di passare quando usciva dell'Egitto, ed egli li evitò, e non li distrusse, | 10 And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy-- |
| 11 ecco essi a fare il contrario, a tentare di cacciarci dal possesso che tu ci hai dato. | 11 behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. |
| 12 O Dio nostro, non farai giustizia di costoro? Noi certamente non possiamo avere forze sufficienti per resistere a questa moltitudine che ci assale. Non sappiamo che fare: non ci rimane altro che rivolgere a te i nostri occhi ». | 12 O our God, wilt thou not execute judgment upon them? For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon thee." |
| 13 Tutto Giuda stava in piedi dinanzi al Signore, coi bambini, colle mogli e coi figli. | 13 Meanwhile all the men of Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. |
| 14 Vi era pure Iahaziel, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Banaia, figlio di Iehiel, figlio di Matania, levita della famiglia di Asaf, e lo Spirito del Signore fu sopra di lui in mezzo alla folla; | 14 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Je-iel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. |
| 15 e disse: « Ascoltate, tu, o Giuda, voi, abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, o re Giosafat: Queste cose vi dice il Signore: Non vi spaventate, non abbiate paura di questa moltitudine, perchè non è vostra la battaglia, ma di Dio. | 15 And he said, "Hearken, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you, 'Fear not, and be not dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but Gods. |
| 16 Domani scenderete contro di essi, che devono salire pel colle di Sis, li troverete all'estremità del torrente che corre di faccia al deserto di leruel. | 16 Tomorrow go down against them; behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. |
| 17 Non starà a voi combattere, basta che vi fermiate fiduciosi, per vedere il soccorso del Signore sopra di voi, o Giuda, o Gerusalemme: non vi spaventate, non temete: domani uscite contro di loro, e il Signore sarà con voi ». | 17 You will not need to fight in this battle; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.' Fear not, and be not dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you." |
| 18 Allora Giosafat, tutto Giuda e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme caddero bocconi per terra dinanzi al Signore e lo adorarono, | 18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. |
| 19 mentre i leviti della stirpe di Caat, della stirpe di Core, con voce forte ed elevata lodavano il Signore Dio d'Israele. | 19 And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. |
| 20 Alzatisi la mattina dopo, uscirono verso il deserto di Tecue. Mentre erano per istrada, Giosafat, ritto in piedi in mezzo a loro, disse: « Ascoltatemi voi, o uomini di Giuda, e voi abitatori di Gerusalemme: credete nel Signore Dio vostro e sarete senza timori; credete ai suoi profeti, e tutto andrà felicemente ». | 20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed." |
| 21 Dati i suoi avvisi al popolo, stabili idei cantori del Signore, affinchè divisi nelle loro schiere, lo lodassero, e, precedendo l'esercito, dicessero ad una voce: « Date lode al Signore, perchè la sua misericordia dura in eterno ». | 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the LORD and praise him in holy array, as they went before the army, and say, "Give thanks to the LORD, for his steadfast love endures for ever." |
| 22 Com'ebbero cominciato a cantar lodi, il Signore rivolse le insidie dei nemici contro loro stessi, cioè contro i figli d'Ammon, di Moab e del monte Seir che erano andati a combattere contro Giuda; ed essi rimasero sconfitti, | 22 And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. |
| 23 perchè i figli d'Ammon e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte di Seir, per ucciderli e sterminarli; finito questo, venuti in rotta fra di loro, caddero uccisi gli uni dagli altri. | 23 For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, destroying them utterly, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another. |
| 24 Quando Giuda fu giunto alla vedetta che guarda il deserto, vide da lontano tutta la vasta regione piena di cadaveri, e che nessuno era scampato alla morte. | 24 When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped. |
| 25 Allora Giosafat con tutto il popolo andò a raccogliere le spoglie dei morti. Trovaron tra i cadaveri varie suppellettili, vesti e cose di grandissimo pregio, e ne predaron tante che non poteron portarle tutte, nè raccogliere le spoglie in tre giorni, sì grande era la preda. | 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil from them, they found cattle in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. |
| 26 Poi al quarto giorno si radunarono nella Valle della Benedizione: avendovi benedetto il Signore, chiamarono quel luogo Valle della Benedizione fino al presente. | 26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, for there they blessed the LORD; therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Beracah to this day. |
| 27 Tutti gli uomini di Giuda, gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e Giosafat alla loro testa, se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme con grande allegrezza, perchè il Signore aveva dato loro di trionfare dei loro nemici. | 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies. |
| 28 Entrarono in Gerusalemme nella casa del Signore al suono di salteri, di cetre e di trombe. | 28 They came to Jerusalem, with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of the LORD. |
| 29 Il terrore del Signore piombò sopra tutti i regni della terra, com'ebbero udito che il Signore aveva combattuto contro i nemici d'Israele. | 29 And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. |
| 30 Cosi il regno di Giosafat ebbe riposo, e il Signore gli diede pace d'ogni intorno. | 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest round about. |
| 31 Giosafat adunque regnò sopra Giuda; aveva trentacinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni in Gerusalemme. La sua madre si chiamava Azuba figlia di Selahi. | 31 Thus Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. |
| 32 Giosafat camminò nella via del suo padre Asa, senza allontanarsene, e fece quello che era accetto davanti al Signore. | 32 He walked in the way of Asa his father and did not turn aside from it; he did what was right in the sight of the LORD. |
| 33 però non fece sparire gli alti luoghi non avendo il popolo ancor rivolto il suo cuore al Signore Dio dei suoi padri. | 33 The high places, however, were not taken away; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers. |
| 34 Il rimanente delle gesta di Giosafat, dalle prime alle ultime, è scritto nel libro che Iehu, figlio di Anani, inserì nei libri dei re d'Israele. | 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, are written in the chronicles of Jehu the son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel. |
| 35 Dopo questo, Giosafat, che era re di Giuda, strinse amicizia con Ocozia re d'Israele, che aveva empiissima condotta, | 35 After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did wickedly. |
| 36 e si unì con lui per fare delle navi che andassero a Tarsis. Fecero una flotta in Asiongaber; | 36 He joined him in building ships to go to Tarshish, and they built the ships in Ezion-geber. |
| 37 ma Eliezer, figlio di Dodau di Maresa, profetò a Giosafat, dicendo: « Perchè tu hai fatto alleanza con Ocozia, il Signore ha distrutta l'opera tua, le navi andarono in pezzi, e non poteron fare il viaggio di Tarsis ». | 37 Then Eliezer the son of Do-davahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have joined with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy what you have made." And the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish. |
