1 Il furore del Signore s'accese di nuovo contro Israele, ed eccitò David contro di essi, dicendo: «Va a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda ».	1 And the fury of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and he stirred up David among them, saying: “Go, number Israel and Judah.”
2 Allora il re disse a Gioab capo del suo esercito: « Percorri tutte le tribù d'Israele da Dan fino a Bersabee, e fate il censimento del popolo, ond'io ne sappia il numero ».	2 And the king said to Joab, the leader of his army, “Travel through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and number the people, so that I may know their number.”
3 Gioab rispose al re: « Il Signore Dio tuo moltiplichi il tuo popolo oltre quello che è attualmente, e di nuovo lo moltiplichi per cento nel cospetto del re mio signore; ma che vorrebbe fare il re mio signore con questo? »	3 And Joab said to the king: “May the Lord your God increase your people, who are already great in number, and may he again increase them, one hundredfold, in the sight of my lord the king. But what does my lord the king intend for himself by this kind of thing?”
4 Ma la parola del re prevalse sulle parole di Gioab e dei capi dell'esefcito, e Gioab e i principi dei soldati partirono dalla presenza del re per fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.	4 But the words of the king prevailed over the words of Joab and the leaders of the army. And so Joab and the leaders of the military departed from the face of the king, so that they might number the people of Israel.
5 Passato il Giordano, andarono ad Aroer, alla destra della città che è nella valle di Gad;	5 And when they had passed across the Jordan, they arrived at Aroer, to the right of the city, which is in the Valley of Gad.
6 poi per Iazer passarono in Galaad e nel paese inferiore di Odsi, e giunsero nelle foreste di Dan. Giraron poi nei dintorni di Sidone,	6 And they continued on through Jazer, into Gilead, and to the lower land of Hodsi. And they arrived in the woodlands of Dan. And going around beside Sidon,
7 passarono presso le mura di Tiro, per tutto il paese dell'Eveo e del Cananeo e arrivarono nella parte meridionale di Giuda in Bersabee.	7 they passed near the walls of Tyre, and near all the land of the Hivite and the Canaanite. And they went into the south of Judah, to Beersheba.
8 Avendo così scorso tutto il paese, tornarono a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi e venti giorni.	8 And having inspected the entire land, after nine months and twenty days, they were present in Jerusalem.
9 Gioab consegnò al re il censimento del popolo che dava d'Israele ottocento mila uomini forti che potevano maneggiar la spada, e di Giuda cinquecento mila combattenti.	9 Then Joab gave the number of the description of the people to the king. And there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand able-bodied men, who might draw the sword; and of Judah, five hundred thousand fighting men.
10 Ma David sentì battere il cuore appena fatto il censimento del popolo, e disse al Signore: « Ho molto peccato facendo questo; ma ti prego, o Signore, di togliere l'iniquità del tuo servo, perchè io ho agito con troppa stoltezza ».	10 Then the heart of David struck him, after the people were numbered. And David said to the Lord: “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But I pray that you, O Lord, may take away the iniquity of your servant. For I have acted very foolishly.”
11 Il giorno dopo, quando David si levò la mattina, il Signore parlò a Gad profeta e veggente di David, dicendo:	11 And David rose up in the morning, and the word of the Lord went to Gad, the prophet and seer of David, saying:
12 « Va a dire a David: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ti è dato di scegliere fra queste tre cose, scegline una, quella che ti pare, ed io te la farò ».	12 “Go, and say to David: ‘Thus says the Lord: I present to you a choice of three things. Choose one of these, whichever you will, so that I may do it to you.’ ”
13 Gad si presentò a David e gli riferì la cosa, dicendo: « O deve venire per sette anni la fame nel tuo paese, o per tre mesi tu dovrai fuggire i tuoi nemici che ti inseguiranno, o vi dovrà essere una peste di tre giorni nel tuo regno: or dunque delibera e fammi sapere che devo rispondere a colui che m'ha mandato ».	13 And when Gad had gone to David, he announced it to him, saying: “Either seven years of famine will come to you in your land; or you will flee for three months from your adversaries, and they will pursue you; or there will be a pestilence in your land for three days. Now then, deliberate, and see what word I may respond to him who sent me.”
14 David rispose a Gad: « La mia angoscia è grande; ma è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore, di cui sono grandi le misericordie, che nelle mani degli uomini ».	14 Then David said to Gad: “I am in great anguish. But it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.”
15 Il Signore mandò in Israele la peste da quella mattina fino al tempo stabilito, e del popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabee, ne morirono settanta mila persone.	15 And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people, from Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand men.
16 Quando l'angelo del Signore stese la mano sopra Gerusalemme per desolarla, il Signore si mosse a pietà per tanta sciagura, e disse all'angelo che percoteva il popolo: « Basta! Ora ferma la tua mano ». L'angelo del Signore era presso l'aia di Areuna Gebuseo.	16 And when the Angel of the Lord had extended his hand over Jerusalem, so that he might destroy it, the Lord took pity on the affliction. And he said to the Angel who was striking the people: “It is enough. Hold back your hand now.” And the Angel of the Lord was beside the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 Quando ebbe veduto l'Angelo che percoteva il popolo, David disse al Signore: « Son io che ho peccato, io che ho agito iniquamente: ma questi, che son le pecore, che han fatto? Si rivolga, ti prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre ».	17 And when he had seen the Angel cutting down the people, David said to the Lord: “I am the one who sinned. I have acted iniquitously. These ones who are the sheep, what have they done? I beg you that your hand may be turned against me and against my father’s house.”
18 In quel giorno Gad andò David e gli disse: « Sali ed erigi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Areuna Gebuseo ».	18 Then Gad went to David on that day, and he said, “Ascend and construct an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
19 David salì secondo la parola di Gad, e l'ordine del Signore.	19 And David ascended in accord with the word of Gad, which the Lord had commanded to him.
20 Areuna, avendo alzati gli occhi, visto venire da lui il re e i suoi servi,	20 And looking out, Araunah turned his attention to the king and his servants, passing toward him.
21 uscito fuori, adorò il re, prostrandosi col volto a terra, e disse: « Perchè mai il re mio signore viene alla casa del suo servo? » David gli disse: « Per comprar la tua aia ed erigervi un altare al Signore, affinchè cessi la mortalità che infierisce nel popolo ».	21 And going out, he adored the king, lying prone with his face to the ground, and he said, “What is the reason that my lord the king has come to his servant?” And David said to him, “So as to purchase the threshing floor from you, and to build an altar to the Lord, and to quiet the plague that rages among the people.”
22 Areuna rispose a David: « Il re mio signore prenda e offerisca come a lui piace: ecco i buoi per l'olocausto, il carro ed i gioghi dei buoi per il legno:	22 And Araunah said to David: “May my lord the king offer and accept whatever is pleasing to him. You have oxen for a holocaust, and the cart and the yokes of the oxen to use for wood.”
23 tutto, o re, dona Areuna al re ». Poi Areuna aggiunse: « Il Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto ».	23 All these things Araunah gave, as a king to a king. And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept your vow.”
24 Ma il re rispose e disse: « Non sarà come vorresti tu; no, io vo' comprare da te a contanti, e non voglio offrire al Signore Dio mio olocausti datimi in dono ». David comprò l'aia ed i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.	24 And in response, the king said to him: “It shall not be as you wish. Instead, I will purchase it from you at a price. For I will not offer to the Lord, my God, holocausts that cost nothing.” Therefore, David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25 Poi David eresse in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e offerse olocausti e ostie pacifiche. Così il Signore tornò propizio alla terra e il flagello cessò in Israele.	25 And in that place, David built an altar to the Lord. And he offered holocausts and peace offerings. And the Lord was gracious to the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.
