| 1 - Di lì a cinque giorni, venne il sommo sacerdote Anania con alcuni anziani e un oratore, certo Tertullo; e comparvero dinanzi al governatore per accusar Paolo. | 1 And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and a spokesman, one Tertullus. They laid before the governor their case against Paul; |
| 2 Fatto venir Paolo, Tertullo cominciò così l'accusa: «La molta pace che in grazia tua godiamo, e le riforme ispirate dalla tua avvedutezza, | 2 and when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: "Since through you we enjoy much peace, and since by your provision, most excellent Felix, reforms are introduced on behalf of this nation, |
| 3 noi, o eccellentissimo Felice, in tutto e per tutto riconosciamo con viva gratitudine. | 3 in every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude. |
| 4 Or, per non trattenerti troppo a lungo, ti prego d'ascoltarci, nella tua equità, brevemente. | 4 But, to detain you no further, I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly. |
| 5 Noi abbiamo quest'uomo pestifero, suscitatore di sedizioni fra tutti i Giudei del mondo intero, e capo sedizioso della setta dei Nazareni; | 5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. |
| 6 egli ha perfin tentato di profanare il tempio; sicchè noi, avendolo preso, volevamo giudicarlo secondo la nostra legge. | 6 He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him. |
| 7 Ma il tribuno Lisia, sopraggiunto, lo strappò con grande violenza dalle nostre mani, | 7 . |
| 8 ordinando a' suoi accusatori di venire da te: e tu, interrogandolo, potrai da lui essere informato di tutte le cose delle quali noi lo accusiamo». | 8 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn from him about everything of which we accuse him." |
| 9 I Giudei s'unirono anch'essi, dicendo che le cose stavano proprio così. | 9 The Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that all this was so. |
| 10 E Paolo, dopo che il governatore gli ebbe fatto segno di parlare, rispose: «Siccome so che da molti anni tu governi questa nazione, con maggior fiducia parlo in mia difesa. | 10 And when the governor had motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: "Realizing that for many years you have been judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. |
| 11 Tu puoi accertarti sicuramente, che non son più di dodici giorni da che salii a Gerusalemme per adorare. | 11 As you may ascertain, it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem; |
| 12 E non m'han veduto, o nel tempio o nelle sinagoghe o in città, discutere con alcuno, nè fare adunata di popolo; | 12 and they did not find me disputing with any one or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues, or in the city. |
| 13 e non possono provarti le cose delle quali ora mi accusano. | 13 Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. |
| 14 Io però ti confesso, che, seguendo la dottrina che essi chiamano setta, io servo il Dio de' padri, credo tutto ciò che è scritto nella Legge e ne' Profeti, | 14 But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the law or written in the prophets, |
| 15 e ho in Dio la speranza che ci sarà quella risurrezione de' giusti e degl'ingiusti che essi pure aspettano. | 15 having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. |
| 16 Per questo io mi studio di conservar sempre incontaminata la coscienza dinanzi a Dio e agli uomini. | 16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men. |
| 17 Or dopo molti anni sono venuto a portar limosine per la mia nazione e a offrir sacrifizi. | 17 Now after some years I came to bring to my nation alms and offerings. |
| 18 Così m'hanno visto purificato nel tempio, senza radunata di gente e senza tumulto. | 18 As I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia-- |
| 19 Quei tali Giudei dell'Asia, che pur dovevano comparire davanti a te ed accusarmi, se avessero qualche cosa contro di me, | 19 they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. |
| 20 oppure questi stessi dicano se m'han trovato in colpa quando fui davanti al Sinedrio; | 20 Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, |
| 21 a meno che non mi si voglia far carico di quella parola che m'uscì stando in mezzo a loro: -Io son oggi giudicato da voi sulla risurrezione de' morti- ». | 21 except this one thing which I cried out while standing among them, 'With respect to the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you this day.'" |
| 22 Felice, che ben sapeva di questa dottrina, rimandò la causa ad altro giorno dicendo: «Quando sarà venuto il tribuno Lisia, allora v'ascolterò». | 22 But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, "When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case." |
| 23 E dette ordine al centurione di tener Paolo in custodia, lasciandogli qualche sollievo, nè si vietasse ad alcuno dei suoi di assisterlo. | 23 Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but should have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs. |
| 24 Qualche giorno dopo, venne Felice con Drusilla sua moglie, che era giudea, e, mandato a chiamar Paolo, lo volle sentir parlare della fede in Cristo Gesù. | 24 After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess; and he sent for Paul and heard him speak upon faith in Christ Jesus. |
| 25 Ma quando Paolo entrò a parlar di giustizia, di continenza, e del futuro giudizio, Felice atterrito disse: «Per adesso va' pure; a miglior tempo ti manderò a chiamare». | 25 And as he argued about justice and self-control and future judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, "Go away for the present; when I have an opportunity I will summon you." |
| 26 Egli sperava nello stesso tempo che Paolo gli avrebbe dato del denaro; perciò lo mandava spesso a chiamare per discorrere con lui. | 26 At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him. |
| 27 Passati due anni, Felice ebbe per successore Porzio Festo; il quale, volendo entrar nelle grazie de' Giudei, lasciò Paolo in prigione. | 27 But when two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison. |
