1 - Alla festa di Pasqua e ai giorni degli azzimi mancavano due giorni; e i principi dei Sacerdoti e gli Scribi cercavano il modo di pigliare a tradimento Gesù e ucciderlo,	1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
2 poichè dicevano : «Non facciamolo in giorno di festa, perchè non ci sia qualche tumulto di popolo».	2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
3 Mentre si trovava in Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso, e stava a tavola, entrò una donna con un vasetto alabastrino di unguento di nardo schietto, molto costoso; e, rotto l'alabastro, glielo versò sul capo.	3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
4 Alcuni se ne indignarono e cominciarono a dire: «Perchè s'è fatto questo sciupio di unguento?	4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
5 Si sarebbe potuto vendere per più di trecento danari a pro dei poveri!». E fremevano contro di lei.	5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
6 Ma Gesù disse: «Lasciatela fare; perchè le date pena? Ella ha compiuto una buona azione.	6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
7 Infatti i poveri li avete sempre con voi, e potete far loro del bene quando volete; mentre non avete sempre me.	7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
8 Essa ha fatto ciò che ha potuto; ha voluto anticipatamente ungere il mio corpo per la sepoltura.	8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
9 In verità vi dico, che dovunque sarà predicato questo Vangelo, sarà pur contato a sua memoria quant'ella ha fatto».	9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
10 Allora Giuda Iscariote, uno dei Dodici, andò dai principi dei Sacerdoti per darlo proditoriamente in loro potere.	10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
11 Essi uditolo, ne furono contenti e promisero di dargli denaro; mentre egli cercava il modo opportuno di tradirlo.	11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
12 Nel primo giorno degli azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli chiesero: «Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare quanto è necessario per mangiare la Pasqua?».	12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
13 Ed egli mandò due discepoli, dicendo: «Andate in città; vi verrà incontro un uomo carico di un'anfora d'acqua; seguitelo	13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
14 e dovunque entri dite al padrone della casa: - Il Maestro dice: "Dov'è la mia sala, dove mangiare la Pasqua co' miei discepoli?" -	14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
15 Egli vi mostrerà una gran sala pronta; quivi fate i preparativi per noi».	15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
16 I discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono come egli aveva detto e prepararono la Pasqua.	16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
17 Calata la sera, Gesù venne coi Dodici.	17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
18 E mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, esclamò: «In verità vi dico che uno di voi che mangia con me mi tradirà».	18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
19 Essi cominciarono a contristarsi e domandargli un dopo l'altro: «Son forse io?».	19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
20 Ma egli rispose loro: «Uno dei Dodici, che mette con me la mano nel piatto.	20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
21 Il Figliuol dell'uomo se ne va, com'è scritto di lui; ma guai a colui per mezzo del quale il Figliuol dell'uomo è tradito! Era meglio per lui se non fosse mai nato!».	21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
22 Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese il pane, e, dopo averlo benedetto, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Prendete, questo è il mio corpo».	22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
23 Poi prese un calice e, rese grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti bevvero	23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
24 e disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue del nuovo testamento che sarà sparso per molti.	24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
25 Io vi dico in verità che non berrò più del succo della vite, fino a quel giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio».	25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
26 Poi cantato l'inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi.	26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
27 e Gesù disse loro: «Io sarò per voi, questa notte, un'occasione di scandalo, perchè è scritto: "Io percoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse".	27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
28 Ma, dopo che sarò risuscitato, vi precederò in Galilea».	28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
29 Ma Pietro gli dichiarò: «Ancorchè tutti si scandalizzassero per tua cagione; non sarà così di me».	29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
30 Gesù gli rispose: «In verità ti dico che tu oggi, questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato la seconda volta mi rinnegherai tre volte».	30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
31 Ma egli più fermamente insisteva: «Quand'anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». E lo stesso dicevan tutti gli altri.	31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
32 Arrivati a un podere, detto Getsemani, Gesù disse a' suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui finchè io abbia pregato».	32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
33 E presi con sè Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, cominciò a tremare e ad essere in preda ad angoscia.	33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
34 E disse loro: «L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte; rimanete qui e vegliate».	34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
35 Inoltratosi si prostrò a terra e cominciò a pregare che quell'ora, se fosse possibile, passasse via da lui	35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
36 ed esclamava: «Abba, Padre, tutto ti è possibile. Allontana da me questo calice; tuttavia non quello che voglio io ma quello che vuoi tu».	36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
37 Poi tornò e li trovò addormentati e disse a Pietro: «Simone, dormi? Non sei stato capace di vegliare un'ora sola?	37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
38 Vegliate e pregate per non cadere in tentazione. Lo spirito, sì, è pronto, ma la carne è debole».	38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
39 Andò di nuovo a pregare, dicendo le stesse parole.	39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 E ritornato, li trovò un'altra volta addormentati, perchè cadevan dal sonno e non sapevano che rispondergli.	40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
41 Ritornò una terza volta e disse loro: «Dormite pure e riposate! Basta così! L'ora è giunta; ecco il Figliuol dell'uomo è dato in mano ai peccatori.	41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco: chi mi tradisce è ormai vicino».	42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
43 Mentre ancora parlava, arrivò Giuda Iscariote, uno dei Dodici, accompagnato da una gran turba, armata di spade e bastoni, mandata dai principi dei sacerdoti, dagli Scribi e dai seniori,	43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 alla quale il traditore aveva dato questo segnale: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; pigliatelo e menatelo via, assicurandovene bene».	44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
45 Appena arrivato, subito accostandosi a lui, gli disse: «Salute, Rabbi!». E lo baciò.	45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
46 Quelli, poste le mani addosso a Gesù, lo arrestarono.	46 The others seized him and arrested him.
47 Uno dei presenti, sfoderata la spada, ferì un servo del sommo sacerdote e gli portò via di netto un orecchio.	47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
48 Gesù rivoltosi a loro, disse: «Siete venuti con spade e con bastoni per prendermi come se fossi un ladrone.	48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
49 Ogni giorno me ne stavo tra voi nel tempio a insegnare e non mi avete preso; ma si compiano le Scritture».	49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
50 Allora tutti i suoi discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono.	50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
51 Lo seguiva però un giovanetto coperto con un lenzuolo sul nudo; e lo presero.	51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
52 Ma quello, lasciato il lenzuolo, se ne fuggì nudo.	52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
53 Condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, presso il quale si radunarono tutti i Sacerdoti, gli Scribi e i seniori.	53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
54 Pietro lo seguì da lungi fin dentro al cortile del sommo sacerdote e seduto coi servitori si scaldava al fuoco.	54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
55 Intanto i Sacerdoti e tutto il Sinedrio cercavano testimonianze contro Gesù per farlo morire e non ne trovavano,	55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
56 perchè molti deponevano il falso contro di lui, ma le testimonianze loro non concordavano.	56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
57 E alcuni, alzatisi, attestarono il falso contro di lui dicendo:	57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
58 «Lo abbiamo sentito dire:- Io distruggerò questo tempio, fatto da mano di uomo e in tre giorni ne fabbricherò un altro, che non sarà fatto da mano d'uomo-».	58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
59 Ma neppure su ciò le loro testimonianze erano concordi.	59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi nel mezzo, domandò a Gesù: «Non rispondi nulla a quanto dicono contro di te?».	60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
61 Ma egli taceva e non rispose nulla. Lo interrogò di nuovo il sommo sacerdote e gli chiese: «Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio benedetto?».	61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
62 Gesù rispose: «Sì, lo sono, e vedrete il Figliuol dell'uomo, seduto alla destra della potenza di Dio venire sulle nubi del cielo».	62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
63 Il sommo sacerdote stracciandosi allora le vesti, esclamò: «Che bisogno abbiamo di testimoni?	63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
64 Voi stessi avete udito la bestemmia: che ve ne pare?». Tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte.	64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
65 E cominciarono alcuni a sputargli addosso, e velargli il volto e a colpirlo con pugni, dicendogli: «Indovina». E le guardie lo schiaffeggiavano.	65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
66 Mentre Pietro se ne stava giù nel cortile, venne una delle serve del sommo sacerdote	66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
67 e, visto Pietro riscaldarsi, lo guardò bene in viso, poi gli disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazzareno».	67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
68 Ma egli negò, dicendo : «Nè lo conosco, nè comprendo quello che tu vuoi dire». E uscì fuori nel vestibolo; e un gallo cantò.	68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
69 La serva, vedutolo di nuovo, cominciò a dire agli astanti: «Costui è di quelli».	69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
70 Ma egli negò nuovamente. E di lì a poco gli astanti dissero a Pietro: «Tu di sicuro devi essere di quelli; giacchè sei Galileo».	70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
71 Egli però cominciò ad imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco l'uomo, del quale parlate».	71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
72 E subito il gallo cantò per la seconda volta. E Pietro si ricordò della parola dettagli da Gesù: «Prima che il gallo canti per la seconda volta, mi rinnegherai tre volte», e si mise a piangere.	72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
