- In quel tempo Erode il Tetrarca, avendo udito la fama di Gesù,1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
disse a' suoi cortigiani: «Costui è Giovanni Battista, risuscitato dai morti; per questo si fanno miracoli per mezzo suo».2 and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."
Poichè Erode, avendo fatto arrestare Giovanni, l'aveva chiuso in prigione, a causa d'Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo;3 Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
perchè Giovanni gli diceva: «Non ti è permesso di tenerla con te».4 for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Ora, pur desiderando di farlo morire, temeva il popolo che lo riguardava come un profeta.5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod
ch'egli promise con giuramento di darle qualunque cosa gli avesse domandato.7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
Ed ella, istruita prima da sua madre: «Dammi qui», gli disse «sopra un piatto la testa di Giovanni Battista».8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,
e fece decapitare Giovanni nella prigione.10 and he had John beheaded in the prison.
La testa di lui, portata sopra un piatto, venne data alla fanciulla.11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
I discepoli di Giovanni vennero a prenderne il corpo e lo seppellirono; poi corsero a riferire il fatto a Gesù.12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.
Gesù, udite queste cose, se ne andò in barca e si ritirò in un luogo deserto e appartato; ma le turbe, saputolo, gli tennero dietro, a piedi, dalle città.13 When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."
Ma Gesù rispose loro: «Non c'è bisogno che se ne vadano; date voi da mangiare a loro».16 (Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."
Essi osservarono: «Noi abbiam soltanto cinque pani e due pesci».17 But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."
«Portatemeli qua», disse loro.18 Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"
E dopo aver comandato alle turbe di accomodarsi sull'erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e alzati gli occhi al cielo, benedisse e spezzando i pani li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alle turbe.19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
Tutti mangiarono e si satollarono; e si portaron via dodici ceste piene colme dei frammenti avanzati.20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.
Ora quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini senza contare le donne e i fanciulli.21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
Subito dopo Gesù invitò i suoi discepoli a salire in barca e a precederlo sull'altra riva, mentr'egli congedava le turbe.22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
Dopo averle congedate, salì in disparte sul monte a pregare. E venuta la sera, si trovò tutto solo.23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.
Frattanto la barca, in mezzo al mare, era sbattuta dai flutti essendo il vento contrario.24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.
E gridaron dalla paura.26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
Pietro rispose: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sulle acque».28 Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."
Ed egli disse: «Vieni». E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sulle acque per andare da Gesù.29 He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
Ma, vedendo la violenza del vento, s'impaurì e poichè cominciava a sommergersi gridò: «Signore, salvami!».30 But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Gesù stendendogli subito la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perchè hai dubitato?».31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."
Attraversato il lago, approdarono nella terra di Genezaret.34 After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick
e lo pregavano di lasciar loro toccare almeno l'orlo della sua veste; e quanti lo toccavano, guarivano.36 and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.
