BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Giacché lo spirito tuo incorruttibile è in tutti!	1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!
2 Perciò gli erranti gradatamente correggi, e ne’ loro falli gli avverti e ammonisci, affinchè liberatisi dalla malvagità credano in te, o Signore.	2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.
3 Invero, gli abitatori antichi della tua terra santa che tu aborrivi,	3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land
4 perchè detestabili opere di magia facevano al tuo cospetto ed empi sacrifizi,	4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.
5 [que, tristi] che uccidevano spietatamente i propri figliuoli, e divoravano viscere umane e ne bevevano il sangue, in mezzo alle loro orge,	5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,
6 [quei] genitori assassini di vite indifese, tu volesti distruggerli per mano de, nostri padri,	6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,
7 affinchè quella terra che più di ogni altra t’è cara ricevesse una degna colonia di figliuoli di Dio.	7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.
8 Ma anche ad essi, come uomini, avesti riguardo, e mandasti quali avanguardie del tuo esercito le vespe, perchè a poco a poco gli sterminassero.	8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.
9 Non che ti mancasse la forza di dar gli empi in aperta battaglia, in mano de’ giusti, o di sterminarli a un tratto per mezzo di bestie feroci o con una ricisa parola;	9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;
10 ma esercitando gradatamente il tuo giudizio lasciavi luogo alla penitenza; [pur] non ignorando che perversa era la loro razza, e innata la loro malvagità, e che non si muterebbero i loro pensieri in eterno:	10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,
11 erano invero una stirpe maledetta sin da principio! Nè già per timore di alcuno accordavi impunità ai loro peccati.	11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.
12 Chi infatti potrebbe dirti: «Che hai fatto?», o chi potrebbe opporsi al tuo giudizio? E chi levarsi contro a te qual difensore d’uomini empi? o chi muoverti querela per lo sterminio di popoli che tu avevi creato?	12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?
13 Non altro Dio c'è fuori di te, che di tutto hai cura, per mostrar [gli] che non ingiustamente hai giudicato;	13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.
14 nè re o sovrano può chiederti conto faccia a faccia di quelli che hai fatto perire.	14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.
15 Ma giusto qual sei, giustamente governi ogni cosa, e il condannar chi non deve esser punito tu reputi cosa allena dalla tua potenza.	15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.
16 La tua forza infatti è principio di giustizia, e l'esser tu il Signore di tutti ti fa a tutti indulgente.	16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .
17 La tua forza tu la mostri, quando non si crede alla tua onnipotenza, e in quei che ti misconoscono tu punisci l’audacia.	17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.
18 Ma padrone della [tua] forza, tu giudichi con tranquillità e con molta indulgenza ci governi, perchè hai sempre pronto, quando tu voglia, il potere.	18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.
19 Hai insegnato al tuo popolo con cotale operare, che il giusto ha da essere anche umano: e lieta speranza hai infuso nei tuoi figliuoli, che tu concedi per i falli il pentimento.	19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.
20 Se invero i nemici de' tuoi servi e meritevoli di morte, tu gli hai puniti con tanto riguardo [e tanta Indulgenza], dando lor tempo e modo di liberarsi dalla malvagità;	20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,
21 con quanto scrupolo non usi tu giudicare i tuoi figliuoli, ai cui padri largisti giuramenti e patti di buone promesse?	21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?
22 Se pertanto tu correggi noi, mille volte [più] tu flagelli i nostri nemici affinchè nel giudicare ci ricordiamo della tua bontà, e, giudicati [alla nostra volta], speriamo nella tua misericordia,	22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.
23 Perciò anche gl’ingiusti, che vivevano nella stoltezza di lor vita, acerbamente tu tormentasti con le loro stesse abominazioni.	23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;
24 Chè assai lungi s'eran sperduti nelle vie dell’errore, ritenendo per dèi i più vili tra gli animali, vivendo a mo’ di bambini senza ragione.	24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.
25 Perciò come a ragazzi scapati mandasti loro un castigo che fosse di beffe.	25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.
26 Ma quegli che dagli scherni della correzione non furon emendati, provarono un giudizio degno di Dio.	26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.
27 In que patimenti, infatti, contro cui si sdegnavano, tormentati da quelle cose stesse che riputavan dèi, vedendo [la mano di] colui che prima dicevan di non conoscere, ebbero a riconoscerlo per il Dio vero. Perciò l'estrema condanna venne su loro!	27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.
