| 4 mi fece osservare esservi un popolo, disperso su tutta la terra, il quale vive secondo leggi insolite, e facendo contro le usanze di tutti i popoli, disprezza gli ordini dei re, e con la sua ribellione turba la concordia di tutte le nazioni. | 4 pointed out to us that among all the nations in the world there is scattered a certain hostile people, who have laws contrary to those of every nation and continually disregard the ordinances of the kings, so that the unifying of the kingdom which we honorably intend cannot be brought about. |
| 5 Ciò avendo noi saputo, vedendo che un solo popolo ribelle a tutto il genere umano segue leggi perverse, contradice ai nostri comandi, e turba la pace e la concordia delle province a noi soggette, | 5 We understand that this people, and it alone, stands constantly in opposition to all men, perversely following a strange manner of life and laws, and is ill-disposed to our government, doing all the harm they can so that our kingdom may not attain stability. |

| 8 Allora Mardocheo pregò il Signore, ricordando tutte le opere di lui, | 8 Then Mordecai prayed to the Lord, calling to remembrance all the works of the Lord. He said: |
| 9 e disse: «Signore, Signore, re onnipotente, al tuo impero tutte le cose son sottoposte, e non v'è chi possa resistere alla tua volontà se tu decreterai di salvare Israele. | 9 "O Lord, Lord, King who rulest over all things, for the universe is in thy power and there is no one who can oppose thee if it is thy will to save Israel. |
| 10 Tu facesti il cielo e la terra, e tutto quello che nell'ambito del cielo è contenuto. | 10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and every wonderful thing under heaven, |
| 11 Tu sei il Signore di tutte le cose, e non v'è chi resista alla tua maestà. | 11 and thou art Lord of all, and there is no one who can resist thee, who art the Lord. |
| 12 Tu conosci tutto, tu sai che non per superbia nè per disprezzo nè per desiderio alcuno di gloria io ho fatto questo, di non adorare il superbissimo Aman; | 12 Thou knowest all things; thou knowest, O Lord, that it was not in insolence or pride or for any love of glory that I did this, and refused to bow down to this proud Haman. |
| 13 che anzi per il bene d'Israele volentieri sarei pronto anche a baciare le orme dei piedi di lui; | 13 For I would have been willing to kiss the soles of his feet, to save Israel! |
| 14 ma non volli riportare su un uomo l'onore dovuto al mio Dio, nè adorare alcuni altri all'infuori del mio Dio. | 14 But I did this, that I might not set the glory of man above the glory of God, and I will not bow down to any one but to thee, who art my Lord; and I will not do these things in pride. |
| 15 Ora dunque, o Signore e re, o Dio d'Abramo, abbi pietà del tuo popolo, poichè i nostri nemici vogliono perdere noi, e distruggere la tua eredità. | 15 And now, O Lord God and King, God of Abraham, spare thy people; for the eyes of our foes are upon us to annihilate us, and they desire to destroy the inheritance that has been thine from the beginning. |
| 16 Non dimenticare il [popolo] che eleggesti per tua porzione, liberandola dall'Egitto. | 16 Do not neglect thy portion, which thou didst redeem for thyself out of the land of Egypt. |
| 17 Ascolta la mia preghiera; sii propizio [al popolo che è] tua sorte e tua porzione, e cangia il nostro lutto in gaudio, acciò scampati da morte lodiamo il tuo nome, o Signore, e tu non chiuda la bocca a quei che ti cantano». | 17 Hear my prayer, and have mercy upon thy inheritance; turn our mourning into feasting, that we may live and sing praise to thy name, O Lord; do not destroy the mouth of those who praise thee." |
| 18 Anche tutto Israele, con un solo animo ed una eguale preghiera, gridò al Signore, poichè la morte senza scampo gli sovrastava. | 18 And all Israel cried out mightily, for their death was before their eyes. |
