Ester 13

1 - «Il re grande Artaserse [che regna] dall'India sino all'Etiopia, dei principi e governatori delle centoventisette province che sottostanno al suo impero, salute.	1 “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the generals and leaders of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces that obey our command: greetings, he says.
2 Comandando io a molte nazioni, ed avendo sottoposto al mio impero tutta la terra, non ho mai voluto abusare della grandezza di mia potenza, ma sì governare con clemenza e benignità i miei sudditi, affinchè passando essi tranquillamente la vita senz'alcun timore, godessero di quella pace che tutti i mortali desiderano.	2 In arrogance, many have abused the goodness of leaders and the honor that has been bestowed on them,
3 Or dimandando io a' miei consiglieri come ciò potesse ottenersi, uno di loro che tutti gli altri avanzava in sapienza e fedeltà, ed era secondo dopo il re, chiamato Aman,	3 and they strive, not only to oppress the king’s subjects, but, not acting according to the glory given to them, set in motion a plan to ambush those very ones who gave it.
4 mi fece osservare esservi un popolo, disperso su tutta la terra, il quale vive secondo leggi insolite, e facendo contro le usanze di tutti i popoli, disprezza gli ordini dei re, e con la sua ribellione turba la concordia di tutte le nazioni.	4 Neither are they content to withhold thanks for benefits and to violate in themselves the laws of humanity, but they also think they are able to escape from every sentence of the sifting judgment of God.
5 Ciò avendo noi saputo, vedendo che un solo popolo ribelle a tutto il genere umano segue leggi perverse, contradice ai nostri comandi, e turba la pace e la concordia delle province a noi soggette,	5 And they rush forth in such insanity that they attempt to subvert by filthy lies those who carefully fulfill the offices delegated to them and so perform everything that is deserving of the praise of all.
6 abbiamo dato ordine che ai quattordici del mese dodicesimo, detto Adar, dell'anno presente, tutti quelli che verranno indicati da Aman, il quale presiede a tutte le province, e viene secondo dopo il re, e che noi veneriamo come un padre, siano sterminati con le mogli e coi figli dai loro nemici, e nessuno abbia di loro pietà,	6 Meanwhile, they craftily deceive by fraud the ears of single-minded leaders, and they judge others according to their own nature.
7 così che quelli scellerati, scendendo in un sol giorno negli abissi, rendano al nostro impero la pace che avevano turbata». (Fin qui la copia della lettera. Ciò che segue, lo trovai scritto dopo quel luogo, dove si legge: «E Mardocheo andò e fece tutto ciò che Ester gli aveva ordinato». Questo però non si trova nel [testo] ebraico e non è riportato affatto da nessun traduttore.)	7 These things are proven both from the ancient histories and from those things which happen daily: how the zeal of kings can be corrupted by the evil suggestions of such persons.
8 Allora Mardocheo pregò il Signore, ricordando tutte le opere di lui,	8 Therefore, we will make provision for the peace of all the provinces.
9 e disse: «Signore, Signore, re onnipotente, al tuo impero tutte le cose son sottoposte, e non v'è chi possa resistere alla tua volontà se tu decreterai di salvare Israele.	9 Neither should you think, if we change our orders, that they come from a fickle mind, but that we draw conclusions from the quality and necessity of the times, just as the expediency of the public good demands.
10 Tu facesti il cielo e la terra, e tutto quello che nell'ambito del cielo è contenuto.	10 And, so that you may more clearly understand what we are saying: Haman the son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian both in mind and ancestry, and foreign to Persian blood, and with his cruelty contaminating our piety, was accepted by us as a sojourner.
11 Tu sei il Signore di tutte le cose, e non v'è chi resista alla tua maestà.	11 And our humanity proved to be so great towards him that he was called our father and was adored by all as second only to the king.
12 Tu conosci tutto, tu sai che non per superbia nè per disprezzo nè per desiderio alcuno di gloria io ho fatto questo, di non adorare il superbissimo Aman;	12 But he was so filled with arrogance as to strive to deprive us of our kingdom and our life.
13 che anzi per il bene d'Israele volentieri sarei pronto anche a baciare le orme dei piedi di lui;	13 For example, with certain strange and unheard of machinations, he sought the death of Mordecai, whose faith and kindness kept us alive, and Esther, the partner of our kingdom, and all their people.
14 ma non volli riportare su un uomo l'onore dovuto al mio Dio, nè adorare alcuni altri all'infuori del mio Dio.	14 This he planned so that, after they were executed, he might work treason against us in our solitude and transfer the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.
15 Ora dunque, o Signore e re, o Dio d'Abramo, abbi pietà del tuo popolo, poichè i nostri nemici vogliono perdere noi, e distruggere la tua eredità.	15 But we, having been resolved to ruin in death the mortal Jews, discovered no fault within them, but on the contrary, they use just laws
16 Non dimenticare il [popolo] che eleggesti per tua porzione, liberandola dall'Egitto.	16 and are sons of the highest and greatest and ever-living God, by whose kindness the kingdom was handed down both to our fathers and to us, and is cared for even unto this day.
17 Ascolta la mia preghiera; sii propizio [al popolo che è] tua sorte e tua porzione, e cangia il nostro lutto in gaudio, acciò scampati da morte lodiamo il tuo nome, o Signore, e tu non chiuda la bocca a quei che ti cantano».	17 Therefore, you should understand to be null and void those letters that he administered under our name.
18 Anche tutto Israele, con un solo animo ed una eguale preghiera, gridò al Signore, poichè la morte senza scampo gli sovrastava.	18 With all the peoples, cities, and provinces, wherever the king’s orders arrived, there was wonderful rejoicing, banquets and feasts, and a solemn holy day, so much so that many of the other nations joined themselves to their religious practices and ceremonies. For a great fear of the name of the Jews had overcome them all.
