1 - Ecco un uomo di Dio giungere da Giuda a Betel per ordine del Signore, mentre Geroboamo stava sull'altare per bruciare l'incenso	1 And behold, by the word of the Lord, a man of God went from Judah to Bethel, when Jeroboam was standing over the altar, and burning incense.
2 e gridò contro l'altare in nome del Signore e disse: «Altare, altare, così dice il Signore: - Nascerà alla casa di Davide un figlio, di nome Josia, e immolerà sopra di te i sacerdoti delle alture, che bruciano ora sopra di te gl'incensi; ed egli brucerà sopra di te ossa umane -».	2 And by the word of the Lord, he cried out against the altar. And he said: “O altar, O altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son will be born to the house of David, Josiah by name. And upon you, he will immolate the priests of the high places, who now burn incense upon you. And upon you, he will burn up the bones of men.’ ”
3 E nello stesso giorno egli diede loro un segno, dicendo: «Questo sarà il segno che il Signore ha parlato: l'altare si spaccherà e la cenere che vi è sopra si disperderà».	3 And he gave a sign on the same day, saying: “This will be the sign that the Lord has spoken. Behold, the altar shall be torn apart, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.”
4 Quando il re intese la parola dell'uomo di Dio, che aveva imprecato contro l'altare di Betel, stese la mano dall'altare e disse: «Prendetelo». Ma la mano, che egli aveva stesa contro di lui, si inaridì e non potè più ritirarla a sè.	4 And when the king had heard the word of the man of God, which he had cried out against the altar at Bethel, he extended his hand from the altar, saying, “Apprehend him!” But his hand, which he had extended against him, withered. And he was unable to draw it back to himself.
5 L'altare si spaccò e la cenere dell'altare si disperse, secondo il segno, che aveva dato l'uomo di Dio in nome del Signore.	5 Also, the altar was torn apart, and the ashes were poured out from the altar, in accord with the sign that the man of God had predicted by the word of the Lord.
6 Disse allora il re all'uomo di Dio: «Prega il Signore Iddio tuo e scongiuralo per me, affinchè mi sia restituito l'uso della mano». E l'uomo di Dio pregò il Signore e il re potè ritrarre a sè la sua mano, che divenne come prima.	6 And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat the face of the Lord your God, and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God prayed before the face of the Lord, and the hand of the king was restored to him, and it became as it had been before.
7 Rivolto all'uomo di Dio, il re disse: «Vieni meco in casa, vi pranzerai e io ti farò regali».	7 Then the king said to the man of God: “Come home with me, so that you may dine. And I will give you gifts.”
8 Ma l'uomo di Dio rispose al re: «Ancorchè mi accordassi la metà della tua casa, io non verrò teco, non mangerò pane, nè berrò acqua in questo luogo;	8 And the man of God responded to the king: “Even if you will give me one half part of your house, I will not go with you, nor eat bread, nor drink water in this place.
9 poichè così mi fu comandato dalla parola del Signore, che mi ordinò: - Non mangerai pane, nè berrai acqua, nè ritornerai per la strada per la quale sei venuto -».	9 For so it was commanded to me by the word of the Lord, ordering: ‘You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water, nor shall you return by the way that you came.’ ”
10 Se ne andò quindi per un'altra strada e non ritornò per quella fatta venendo a Betel.	10 Then he departed by another way, and he did not return along the way that he had traveled to Bethel.
11 In Betel abitava un vecchio profeta i cui figliuoli vennero a narrargli tutto ciò che aveva fatto l'uomo di Dio, in quel giorno a Betel, e riferirono al loro padre le parole che egli aveva rivolto al re.	11 Now a certain elderly prophet was living in Bethel. His sons went to him, and they described to him all the works which the man of God had accomplished on that day in Bethel. And they described to their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
12 Il padre domandò loro: «Per qual via se n'è andato?». I figli mostrarono la strada per la quale se n'era andato l'uomo di Dio, venuto da Giuda.	12 And their father said to them, “By which way did he depart?” His sons showed him the way by which the man of God, who had come from Judah, had departed.
13 Disse allora ai suoi figli: «Sellatemi l'asino», e dopo che essi glielo ebbero sellato, egli vi montò sopra	13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled it, he climbed on,
14 e se ne andò dietro all'uomo di Dio e trovatolo sotto un terebinto, gli chiese: «Sei tu l'uomo di Dio, venuto da Giuda?». «Lo sono», gli rispose.	14 and he went away after the man of God. And he found him sitting under a terebinth tree. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he responded, “I am.”
15 E l'altro soggiunse: «Vieni con me a casa per prendere un po' di cibo».	15 And he said to him, “Come home with me, so that you may eat bread.”
16 Ma quegli rispose: «Non posso tornare, nè venire con te, nè mangiare pane, nè bere acqua in questo luogo,	16 But he said: “I am not able to turn back, nor to go with you. Neither will I eat bread, or drink water in this place.
17 poichè il Signore mi parlò in questi termini: - Non mangerai pane, nè berrai acqua e non tornerai per la via per la quale sei andato -».	17 For the Lord has spoken to me, by the word of the Lord, saying, “You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water in that place, nor shall you return by the way that you arrived.”
18 Ma l'altro soggiunse: «Anch'io sono profeta simile a te, e un angelo mi ha parlato a nome del Signore, dicendo: - Riconducilo teco a casa, affinchè mangi pane e beva acqua -». Così lo ingannò	18 And he said to him: “I, too, am a prophet like you. And an Angel spoke to me, by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Lead him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread, and drink water.’ ” And so he deceived him.
19 e lo ricondusse con sè; ed egli mangiò pane in casa di lui e bevve acqua.	19 And he led him back with him. Then he ate bread and drank water in his house.
20 Mentre sedevano a mensa, la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta che l'aveva ricondotto,	20 And while they were sitting at table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had led him back.
21 ed egli gridò all'uomo di Dio, che era venuto da Giuda e disse: «Questo dice il Signore: - Poichè non sei stato obbediente all'ordine del Signore e non osservasti il comando, che ti aveva dato il Signore Iddio tuo,	21 And he cried out to the man of God who had arrived from Judah, saying: “Thus says the Lord: Because you were not obedient to the mouth of the Lord, and you did not keep the commandment that the Lord your God instructed to you,
22 e sei tornato e hai mangiato pane e bevuto acqua nel luogo in cui ti aveva comandato di non mangiar pane, e di non bere acqua, il tuo cadavere non entrerà nel sepolcro dei padri tuoi-».	22 and you turned back, and ate bread, and drank water in the place where he commanded you that you should not eat bread, nor drink water: your dead body shall not be carried back to the sepulcher of your fathers.”
23 E quando egli ebbe mangiato e bevuto, [il vecchio profeta] sellò l'asino suo per il profeta che aveva fatto tornare indietro.	23 And when he had eaten and had drunk, he saddled his donkey for the prophet whom he had led back.
24 E questi, come se ne fu partito, s'imbattè per la strada in un leone, dal quale fu ucciso. Il cadavere era steso sul sentiero; l'asino stava presso di lui e il leone era accanto al cadavere.	24 And when he had departed, a lion found him along the way, and it killed him, and his dead body was left upon the road. Now the donkey was standing beside him. And the lion was standing beside the dead body.
25 Alcuni uomini che passavano di lì videro il cadavere, e vennero a divulgare il fatto nella città nella quale abitava quel vecchio profeta.	25 And behold, men who were passing by saw the dead body lying in the road, with the lion standing beside the body. And they went and made it widely known in the city where that elderly prophet was living.
26 Avendo inteso ciò quel profeta, che aveva ricondotto indietro l'uomo di Dio disse: «È l'uomo di Dio, che essendo stato disubbidiente alla parola del Signore, fu dal Signore dato in preda al leone, il quale lo ha lacerato e ucciso secondo la parola che il Signore gli aveva detto».	26 And when that prophet, who had led him back from the way, had heard it, he said: “It is the man of God, who was disobedient to the mouth of the Lord. And the Lord has delivered him to the lion. And it has torn him apart and killed him, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he spoke to him.”
27 Disse quindi ai suoi figli: «Sellatemi l'asino». Ed egli, dopo che glielo ebbero sellato,	27 And he said to his sons, “Saddle a donkey for me.” And when they had saddled it,
28 andò e trovò il cadavere disteso sulla via e l'asino e il leone accanto al cadavere. Il leone non aveva divorato il cadavere nè ucciso l'asino.	28 and he had departed, he found the dead body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside the dead body. The lion did not eat from the dead body, nor did it harm the donkey.
29 Il profeta raccolse il cadavere dell'uomo di Dio, lo collocò sull'asino, e il vecchio profeta, ritornando, lo portò nella sua città per piangerlo.	29 Then the prophet took the dead body of the man of God, and he placed it upon the donkey, and returning, he brought it into the city of the elderly prophet, so that he might mourn for him.
30 E pose il cadavere di lui nel suo stesso sepolcro ed [egli e i suoi figliuoli] lo piansero dicendo: «Ohimè! Ohimè, fratello mio!».	30 And he placed his dead body in his own sepulcher. And they mourned for him, saying: “Alas! Alas! My brother!”
31 Quando l'ebbero pianto, egli disse ai figliuoli: «Quando io sarò morto, seppellitemi nel sepolcro dove è stato posto l'uomo di Dio; accanto alle sue ossa mettete le mie;	31 And when they had mourned over him, he said to his sons: “When I will have died, bury me in the sepulcher in which the man of God was buried. Place my bones beside his bones.
32 poichè senza dubbio si avvererà la parola che egli ha predetta da parte del Signore contro l'altare, che sta in Betel, e contro tutte le alture, che sono nelle città di Samaria».	32 For certainly, the word will arrived, which he predicted by the word of the Lord, against the altar, which is in Bethel, and against all the shrines of the high places, which are in the cities of Samaria.”
33 Dopo questi fatti Geroboamo non si convertì dalla sua pessima vita. Anzi creò di nuovo sacerdoti delle alture, presi dall'infimo popolo. Chiunque voleva, egli lo consacrava, e diventava sacerdote delle alture.	33 After these words, Jeroboam did not turn back from his very evil way. Instead, to the contrary, he made priests for the high places out of the least of the people. Whosoever was willing, he filled his hand, and he became a priest of the high places.
34 E per questa ragione peccò la casa di Geroboamo e fu sterminata e distrutta dalla faccia della terra.	34 And for this reason, the house of Jeroboam sinned, and was uprooted, and was wiped from the face of the earth.
