1 - Ecco un uomo di Dio giungere da Giuda a Betel per ordine del Signore, mentre Geroboamo stava sull'altare per bruciare l'incenso	1 A man of God came from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing at the altar to offer sacrifice.
2 e gridò contro l'altare in nome del Signore e disse: «Altare, altare, così dice il Signore: - Nascerà alla casa di Davide un figlio, di nome Josia, e immolerà sopra di te i sacerdoti delle alture, che bruciano ora sopra di te gl'incensi; ed egli brucerà sopra di te ossa umane -».	2 He cried out against the altar the word of the LORD: "O altar, altar, the LORD says, 'A child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, who shall slaughter upon you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifice upon you, and he shall burn human bones upon you.'"
3 E nello stesso giorno egli diede loro un segno, dicendo: «Questo sarà il segno che il Signore ha parlato: l'altare si spaccherà e la cenere che vi è sopra si disperderà».	3 He gave a sign that same day and said: "This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: The altar shall break up and the ashes on it shall be strewn about.
4 Quando il re intese la parola dell'uomo di Dio, che aveva imprecato contro l'altare di Betel, stese la mano dall'altare e disse: «Prendetelo». Ma la mano, che egli aveva stesa contro di lui, si inaridì e non potè più ritirarla a sè.	4 When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God was crying out against the altar, he stretched forth his hand from the altar and said, "Seize him!" But the hand he stretched forth against him withered, so that he could not draw it back.
5 L'altare si spaccò e la cenere dell'altare si disperse, secondo il segno, che aveva dato l'uomo di Dio in nome del Signore.	5 Moreover, the altar broke up and the ashes from it were strewn about--the sign the man of God had given as the word of the LORD.
6 Disse allora il re all'uomo di Dio: «Prega il Signore Iddio tuo e scongiuralo per me, affinchè mi sia restituito l'uso della mano». E l'uomo di Dio pregò il Signore e il re potè ritrarre a sè la sua mano, che divenne come prima.	6 Then the king appealed to the man of God. "Entreat the LORD, your God," he said, "and intercede for me that I may be able to withdraw my hand." So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king recovered the normal use of his hand.
7 Rivolto all'uomo di Dio, il re disse: «Vieni meco in casa, vi pranzerai e io ti farò regali».	7 "Come home with me for some refreshment," the king invited the man of God, "and I will give you a present."
8 Ma l'uomo di Dio rispose al re: «Ancorchè mi accordassi la metà della tua casa, io non verrò teco, non mangerò pane, nè berrò acqua in questo luogo;	8 "If you gave me half your kingdom," the man of God said to the king, "I would not go with you, nor eat bread or drink water in this place.
9 poichè così mi fu comandato dalla parola del Signore, che mi ordinò: - Non mangerai pane, nè berrai acqua, nè ritornerai per la strada per la quale sei venuto -».	9 For I was instructed by the word of the LORD not to eat bread or drink water and not to return by the way I came."
10 Se ne andò quindi per un'altra strada e non ritornò per quella fatta venendo a Betel.	10 So he departed by another road and did not go back the way he had come to Bethel.
11 In Betel abitava un vecchio profeta i cui figliuoli vennero a narrargli tutto ciò che aveva fatto l'uomo di Dio, in quel giorno a Betel, e riferirono al loro padre le parole che egli aveva rivolto al re.	11 There was an old prophet living in the city, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. When they repeated to their father the words he had spoken to the king,
12 Il padre domandò loro: «Per qual via se n'è andato?». I figli mostrarono la strada per la quale se n'era andato l'uomo di Dio, venuto da Giuda.	12 the father asked them, "Which way did he go?" And his sons pointed out to him the road taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.
13 Disse allora ai suoi figli: «Sellatemi l'asino», e dopo che essi glielo ebbero sellato, egli vi montò sopra	13 Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the ass for me." When they had saddled it, he mounted
14 e se ne andò dietro all'uomo di Dio e trovatolo sotto un terebinto, gli chiese: «Sei tu l'uomo di Dio, venuto da Giuda?». «Lo sono», gli rispose.	14 and followed the man of God, whom he found seated under a terebinth. When he asked him, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?" he answered, "Yes."
15 E l'altro soggiunse: «Vieni con me a casa per prendere un po' di cibo».	15 Then he said, "Come home with me and have some bread."
16 Ma quegli rispose: «Non posso tornare, nè venire con te, nè mangiare pane, nè bere acqua in questo luogo,	16 "I cannot go back with you, and I cannot eat bread or drink water with you in this place," he answered,
17 poichè il Signore mi parlò in questi termini: - Non mangerai pane, nè berrai acqua e non tornerai per la via per la quale sei andato -».	17 "for I was told by the word of the LORD neither to eat bread nor drink water here, and not to go back the way I came."
18 Ma l'altro soggiunse: «Anch'io sono profeta simile a te, e un angelo mi ha parlato a nome del Signore, dicendo: - Riconducilo teco a casa, affinchè mangi pane e beva acqua -». Così lo ingannò	18 But he said to him, "I, too, am a prophet like you, and an angel told me in the word of the LORD to bring you back with me to my house and to have you eat bread and drink water." He was lying to him, however.
19 e lo ricondusse con sè; ed egli mangiò pane in casa di lui e bevve acqua.	19 So he went back with him, and ate bread and drank water in his house.
20 Mentre sedevano a mensa, la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta che l'aveva ricondotto,	20 But while they were sitting at table, the LORD spoke to the prophet who had brought him back,
21 ed egli gridò all'uomo di Dio, che era venuto da Giuda e disse: «Questo dice il Signore: - Poichè non sei stato obbediente all'ordine del Signore e non osservasti il comando, che ti aveva dato il Signore Iddio tuo,	21 and he cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah: "The LORD says, 'Because you rebelled against the command of the LORD and did not keep the command which the LORD, your God, gave you,
22 e sei tornato e hai mangiato pane e bevuto acqua nel luogo in cui ti aveva comandato di non mangiar pane, e di non bere acqua, il tuo cadavere non entrerà nel sepolcro dei padri tuoi-».	22 but returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you to do neither, your corpse shall not be brought to the grave of your ancestors.'"
23 E quando egli ebbe mangiato e bevuto, [il vecchio profeta] sellò l'asino suo per il profeta che aveva fatto tornare indietro.	23 After he had eaten bread and drunk water, the ass was saddled for him, and he again
24 E questi, come se ne fu partito, s'imbattè per la strada in un leone, dal quale fu ucciso. Il cadavere era steso sul sentiero; l'asino stava presso di lui e il leone era accanto al cadavere.	24 set out. But a lion met him on the road, and killed him. His corpse lay sprawled on the road, and the ass remained standing by it, and so did the lion.
25 Alcuni uomini che passavano di lì videro il cadavere, e vennero a divulgare il fatto nella città nella quale abitava quel vecchio profeta.	25 Some passers-by saw the body lying in the road, with the lion standing beside it, and carried the news to the city where the old prophet lived.
26 Avendo inteso ciò quel profeta, che aveva ricondotto indietro l'uomo di Dio disse: «È l'uomo di Dio, che essendo stato disubbidiente alla parola del Signore, fu dal Signore dato in preda al leone, il quale lo ha lacerato e ucciso secondo la parola che il Signore gli aveva detto».	26 On hearing it, the prophet who had brought him back from his journey said: "It is the man of God who rebelled against the command of the LORD. He has delivered him to a lion, which mangled and killed him, as the LORD predicted to him."
27 Disse quindi ai suoi figli: «Sellatemi l'asino». Ed egli, dopo che glielo ebbero sellato,	27 Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the ass for me." When they had saddled it,
28 andò e trovò il cadavere disteso sulla via e l'asino e il leone accanto al cadavere. Il leone non aveva divorato il cadavere nè ucciso l'asino.	28 he went off and found the body lying in the road with the ass and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body nor had it harmed the ass.
29 Il profeta raccolse il cadavere dell'uomo di Dio, lo collocò sull'asino, e il vecchio profeta, ritornando, lo portò nella sua città per piangerlo.	29 The prophet lifted up the body of the man of God and put it on the ass, and brought it back to the city to mourn over it and to bury it.
30 E pose il cadavere di lui nel suo stesso sepolcro ed [egli e i suoi figliuoli] lo piansero dicendo: «Ohimè! Ohimè, fratello mio!».	30 He laid the man's body in his own grave, and they mourned over it: "Alas, my brother!"
31 Quando l'ebbero pianto, egli disse ai figliuoli: «Quando io sarò morto, seppellitemi nel sepolcro dove è stato posto l'uomo di Dio; accanto alle sue ossa mettete le mie;	31 After he had buried him, he said to his sons, "When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my remains beside his.
32 poichè senza dubbio si avvererà la parola che egli ha predetta da parte del Signore contro l'altare, che sta in Betel, e contro tutte le alture, che sono nelle città di Samaria».	32 For the word of the LORD which he proclaimed against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria shall certainly come to pass."
33 Dopo questi fatti Geroboamo non si convertì dalla sua pessima vita. Anzi creò di nuovo sacerdoti delle alture, presi dall'infimo popolo. Chiunque voleva, egli lo consacrava, e diventava sacerdote delle alture.	33 Jeroboam did not give up his evil ways after this event, but again made priests for the high places from among the common people. Whoever desired it was consecrated and became a priest of the high places.
34 E per questa ragione peccò la casa di Geroboamo e fu sterminata e distrutta dalla faccia della terra.	34 This was a sin on the part of the house of Jeroboam for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the earth.
