BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Apparve ancora il Signore ad Abramo nella valle di Mambre, quando sedeva all'ingresso della sua tenda nell'ora più calda del giorno.	1 Yahweh appeared to him at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent duringthe hottest part of the day.
2 Avendo alzato gli occhi, gli apparvero tre uomini in piedi presso di lui; vedutili, corse incontro a loro di sull'ingresso della tenda, e s'inchinò fino a terra.	2 He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran fromthe entrance of the tent to greet them, and bowed to the ground.
3 E disse: «Signore, se ho trovato grazia innanzi a te, non lasciar così il tuo servo;	3 'My lord,' he said, 'if I find favour with you, please do not pass your servant by.
4 porterò un po' d'acqua, vi laverete i piedi, e vi riposerete sotto quest'albero;	4 Let me have a little water brought, and you can wash your feet and have a rest under the tree.
5 porterò un boccone di pane, e vi rimetterete in forza; poi ripartirete; per questo infatti siete venuti a me vostro servo». E quelli dissero: «Fa' come hai detto».	5 Let me fetch a little bread and you can refresh yourselves before going further, now that you havecome in your servant's direction.' They replied, 'Do as you say.'
6 Rientrò subito Abramo nella tenda, e disse a Sara: «Presto, impasta tre misure di fior di farina, e fanne focacce da cuocere sotto la cenere».	6 Abraham hurried to the tent and said to Sarah, 'Quick, knead three measures of best flour and makeloaves.'
7 Egli poi corse all'armento, e, preso un vitello tenerissimo e grasso, lo dette ad un servo che s'affrettò a cuocerlo.	7 Then, running to the herd, Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurriedto prepare it.
8 Prese poi burro e latte, ed il vitello cotto, e lo imbandì a quelli. Egli poi stava in piedi presso di loro, sotto l'albero.	8 Then taking curds, milk and the calf which had been prepared, he laid al before them, and they atewhile he remained standing near them under the tree.
9 Quando ebbero mangiato, quelli gli dissero: «Dov'è Sara tua moglie?». Rispose: «È nella tenda».	9 'Where is your wife Sarah?' they asked him. 'She is in the tent,' he replied.
10 E quello disse: «Ritornerò, e ripasserò da te, di questa stagione, un altr'anno e Sara tua moglie avrà allora un figlio già in vita». Il che udendo Sara, rise di dietro alla porta della tenda.	10 Then his guest said, 'I shal come back to you next year, and then your wife Sarah will have a son.'Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him.
11 Erano infatti vecchi ambedue, e d'età avanzata, e Sara non aveva più i ricorsi mensili.	11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, wel on in years, and Sarah had ceased to have her monthlyperiods.
12 Rise perciò di nascosto, dicendo: «Ora che io son vecchia, ed il mio signore è decrepito tornerò ai piaceri di gioventù?».	12 So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, 'Now that I am past the age of childbearing, and my husbandis an old man, is pleasure to come my way again?'
13 Disse allora il Signore ad Abramo: «Perchè ha riso Sara, dicendo: - Partorirò forse da vecchia? -	13 But Yahweh asked Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh and say, "Am I real y going to have a child nowthat I am old?"
14 V'è forse per Iddio qualcosa di difficile? Come t'ho detto, tornerò a te in questo medesimo tempo un altr'anno, e Sara avrà allora un figlio già in vita».	14 Nothing is impossible for Yahweh. I shal come back to you at the same time next year and Sarahwil have a son.'
15 Sara intimorita negò, e disse: «Non ho riso». Ma il Signore: «Non è vero; hai propriamente riso».	15 Sarah said, 'I did not laugh,' lying because she was afraid. But he replied, 'Oh yes, you did laugh.'
16 Alzatisi dunque di lì quelli uomini, s'incamminarono verso Sodoma, ed Abramo accompagnandoli camminava con loro.	16 From there the men set out and arrived within sight of Sodom, with Abraham accompanying them tospeed them on their way.
17 Disse il Signore: «Potrò forse io nascondere ad Abramo quel che sono per fare,	17 Now Yahweh had wondered, 'Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do,
18 mentre si dovrà dare origine ad un popolo grande e potente, ed in lui debbono esser benedette tutte le nazioni della terra?	18 as Abraham wil become a great and powerful nation and al nations on earth wil bless themselvesby him?
19 So bene che egli insegnerà ai suoi figli ed alla sua casa di continuare a custodire le vie del Signore, ed osservare l'equità e la giustizia, acciò eseguisca il Signore a riguardo di Abramo tutto quanto gli ha promesso».	19 For I have singled him out to command his sons and his family after him to keep the way of Yahwehby doing what is upright and just, so that Yahweh can carry out for Abraham what he has promised him.'
20 Gli disse dunque: «La voce che grida a me da Sodoma e da Gomorra s'è fatta più forte, ed il loro peccato sempre più grave.	20 Then Yahweh said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin is so grave,
21 Discenderò per vedere se le loro opere corrispondano al grido che me ne viene; o, se così non è, per saperlo».	21 that I shal go down and see whether or not their actions are at all as the outcry reaching me wouldsuggest. Then I shal know.'
22 Partirono dunque di lì, e si diressero a Sodoma: Abramo poi restò ancora dinanzi al Signore.	22 While the men left there and went to Sodom, Yahweh remained in Abraham's presence.
23 Ed appressandosi disse: «Vorrai tu perdere il giusto insieme all'empio?	23 Abraham stepped forward and said, 'Wil you really destroy the upright with the guilty?
24 Se vi saranno in questa città cinquanta giusti, periranno anche essi? Non risparmierai tu la città per cinquanta giusti, se vi si troveranno?	24 Suppose there are fifty upright people in the city. Wil you really destroy it? Wil you not spare theplace for the sake of the fifty upright in it?
25 Lungi da te il fare tal cosa, uccidere il giusto insieme con l'empio, mettere il giusto alla pari dell'empio. Non si conviene a te. Tu che giudichi tutta la terra, non pronunzierai certo una tal sentenza».	25 Do not think of doing such a thing: to put the upright to death with the guilty, so that upright and guiltyfare alike! Is the judge of the whole world not to act justly?'
26 Gli rispose il Signore: «Se troverò in Sodoma, in tutta la città, cinquanta giusti, perdonerò in grazia di loro all'intera città».	26 Yahweh replied, 'If I find fifty upright people in the city of Sodom, I wil spare the whole placebecause of them.'
27 Ed Abramo continuò: «Poichè ho incominciato, parlerò ancora al mio Signore, benchè io sia polvere e cenere.	27 Abraham spoke up and said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord, I who am dust andashes:
28 Che farai, se saranno cinque di meno di cinquanta? Perchè sono quarantacinque distruggerai tutta la città?». Disse il Signore: «Non la distruggerò, se ve ne troverò quarantacinque».	28 Suppose the fifty upright were five short? Would you destroy the whole city because of five?' 'No,' hereplied, 'I shal not destroy it if I find forty-five there.'
29 E parlò ancora, dicendo: «Se ve se ne trovassero quaranta, che faresti?». Rispose: «Per amore di quei quaranta, non castigherò».	29 Abraham persisted and said, 'Suppose there are forty to be found there?' 'I shal not do it,' he replied,'for the sake of the forty.'
30 Allora: «Di grazia, Signore, non ti sdegnare se parlo. Se ve se ne trovassero trenta che faresti?». Rispose: «Non farò niente, se ve ne troverò trenta».	30 Abraham said, 'I hope the Lord wil not be angry if I go on: Suppose there are only thirty to be foundthere?' 'I shall not do it,' he replied, 'if I find thirty there.'
31 «Giacchè una volta ho cominciato parlerò ancora al mio Signore. E se fossero venti?». Disse: «Per quei venti, non sterminerò gli altri».	31 He said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord: Suppose there are only twenty there?' 'I shallnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the twenty.'
32 «Ti supplico, Signore, non t'adirare se parlo ancora soltanto una volta. E se fossero dieci?». Disse: «Per quei dieci, non la distruggerò».	32 He said, 'I trust my Lord wil not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there wil only be ten.' 'I shalnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the ten.'
33 Cessato che ebbe di parlare ad Abramo, il Signore disparve, e quegli tornò nella sua terra.	33 When he had finished talking to Abraham Yahweh went away, and Abraham returned home.
