LXXNEW JERUSALEM
ελεησον ημας δεσποτα ο θεος παντων και επιβλεψον και επιβαλε τον φοβον σου επι παντα τα εθνη1 Take pity on us, Master, Lord of the universe, look at us, spread fear of yourself throughout al othernations.
επαρον την χειρα σου επι εθνη αλλοτρια και ιδετωσαν την δυναστειαν σου2 Raise your hand against the foreign nations and let them see your might.
ωσπερ ενωπιον αυτων ηγιασθης εν ημιν ουτως ενωπιον ημων μεγαλυνθειης εν αυτοις3 As, in their sight, you have proved yourself holy to us, so now, in our sight, prove yourself great to them.
και επιγνωτωσαν σε καθαπερ και ημεις επεγνωμεν οτι ουκ εστιν θεος πλην σου κυριε4 Let them acknowledge you, just as we have acknowledged that there is no God but you, Lord.
εγκαινισον σημεια και αλλοιωσον θαυμασια δοξασον χειρα και βραχιονα δεξιον5 Send new portents, do fresh wonders, win glory for your hand and your right arm.
εγειρον θυμον και εκχεον οργην εξαρον αντιδικον και εκτριψον εχθρον6 Rouse your fury, pour out your rage, destroy the opponent, annihilate the enemy.
σπευσον καιρον και μνησθητι ορκισμου και εκδιηγησασθωσαν τα μεγαλεια σου7 Hasten the day, remember the oath, and let people tell of your mighty deeds.
εν οργη πυρος καταβρωθητω ο σωζομενος και οι κακουντες τον λαον σου ευροισαν απωλειαν8 Let fiery wrath swal ow up the survivor, and destruction overtake those who oppress your people.
συντριψον κεφαλας αρχοντων εχθρων λεγοντων ουκ εστιν πλην ημων9 Crush the heads of hostile rulers who say, 'There is no one else but us!'
συναγαγε πασας φυλας ιακωβ και κατακληρονομησον αυτους καθως απ' αρχης10 Gather together all the tribes of Jacob, restore them their heritage as at the beginning.
ελεησον λαον κυριε κεκλημενον επ' ονοματι σου και ισραηλ ον πρωτογονω ωμοιωσας11 Take pity, Lord, on the people cal ed by your name, on Israel whom you have made your first-born.
οικτιρησον πολιν αγιασματος σου ιερουσαλημ τοπον καταπαυματος σου12 Have compassion on your holy city, on Jerusalem, the place where you rest.
πλησον σιων αρεταλογιας σου και απο της δοξης σου τον λαον σου13 Fil Zion with your praises and your sanctuary with your glory.
δος μαρτυριον τοις εν αρχη κτισμασιν σου και εγειρον προφητειας τας επ' ονοματι σου14 Vindicate those whom you created first, fulfil what has been prophesied in your name.
δος μισθον τοις υπομενουσιν σε και οι προφηται σου εμπιστευθητωσαν15 Give those who wait for you their reward, let your prophets be proved true.
εισακουσον κυριε δεησεως των ικετων σου κατα την ευλογιαν ααρων περι του λαου σου16 Grant, Lord, the prayer of your servants, in the terms of Aaron's blessing on your people,
και γνωσονται παντες οι επι της γης οτι κυριος ει ο θεος των αιωνων17 so that al the earth's inhabitants may acknowledge that you are the Lord, the everlasting God.
παν βρωμα φαγεται κοιλια εστιν δε βρωμα βρωματος καλλιον18 The stomach takes in all kinds of food, but some foods are better than others.
φαρυγξ γευεται βρωματα θηρας ουτως καρδια συνετη λογους ψευδεις19 As the palate discerns the flavour of game, so a shrewd listener detects lying words.
καρδια στρεβλη δωσει λυπην και ανθρωπος πολυπειρος ανταποδωσει αυτω20 A perverse character causes depression in others; it needs experience to know how to repay such aone.
παντα αρρενα επιδεξεται γυνη εστιν δε θυγατηρ θυγατρος κρεισσων21 A woman wil accept any husband, but some daughters are better than others.
καλλος γυναικος ιλαρυνει προσωπον και υπερ πασαν επιθυμιαν ανθρωπου υπεραγει22 A woman's beauty delights the beholder, a man likes nothing better.
ει εστιν επι γλωσσης αυτης ελεος και πραυτης ουκ εστιν ο ανηρ αυτης καθ' υιους ανθρωπων23 If her tongue is kind and gentle, her husband is the happiest of men.
ο κτωμενος γυναικα εναρχεται κτησεως βοηθον κατ' αυτον και στυλον αναπαυσεως24 The man who takes a wife has the makings of a fortune, a helper to match himself, a pil ar of support.
ου ουκ εστιν φραγμος διαρπαγησεται κτημα και ου ουκ εστιν γυνη στεναξει πλανωμενος25 When property has no fence, it is open to plunder, when a man has no wife, he is aimless andquerulous.
τις γαρ πιστευσει ευζωνω ληστη αφαλλομενω εκ πολεως εις πολιν26 Wil anyone trust an armed thief who flits from town to town?
ουτως ανθρωπω μη εχοντι νοσσιαν και καταλυοντι ου εαν οψιση27 So it is with the man who has no nest, and lodges wherever night overtakes him.
