LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
εστιν γαρ αργυριω τοπος οθεν γινεται τοπος δε χρυσιω οθεν διηθειται1 There is indeed a mine for silver, and a place for gold which men refine.
σιδηρος μεν γαρ εκ γης γινεται χαλκος δε ισα λιθω λατομειται2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is melted out of stone.
ταξιν εθετο σκοτει και παν περας αυτος εξακριβαζεται λιθος σκοτια και σκια θανατου3 He has set a boundary for the darkness; to the farthest confines he penetrates.
διακοπη χειμαρρου απο κονιας οι δε επιλανθανομενοι οδον δικαιαν ησθενησαν εκ βροτων
γη εξ αυτης εξελευσεται αρτος υποκατω αυτης εστραφη ωσει πυρ5 The earth, though out of it comes forth bread, is in fiery upheaval underneath.
τοπος σαπφειρου οι λιθοι αυτης και χωμα χρυσιον αυτω6 Its stones are the source of sapphires, and there is gold in its dust.
τριβος ουκ εγνω αυτην πετεινον και ου παρεβλεψεν αυτην οφθαλμος γυπος7 The path to it no bird of prey knows, nor has the hawk's eye seen that path.
ουκ επατησαν αυτην υιοι αλαζονων ου παρηλθεν επ' αυτης λεων8 The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the lion gone that way.
εν ακροτομω εξετεινεν χειρα αυτου κατεστρεψεν δε εκ ριζων ορη9 He sets his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns the mountains at their foundations.
δινας δε ποταμων ερρηξεν παν δε εντιμον ειδεν μου ο οφθαλμος10 He splits channels in the rocks; his eyes behold all that is precious.
βαθη δε ποταμων ανεκαλυψεν εδειξεν δε εαυτου δυναμιν εις φως11 He probes the wellsprings of the streams, and brings hidden things to light.
η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της επιστημης12 But whence can wisdom be obtained, and where is the place of understanding?
ουκ οιδεν βροτος οδον αυτης ουδε μη ευρεθη εν ανθρωποις13 Man knows nothing to equal it, nor is it to be had in the land of the living.
αβυσσος ειπεν ουκ εστιν εν εμοι και θαλασσα ειπεν ουκ εστιν μετ' εμου14 The abyss declares, "It is not in me"; and the sea says, "I have it not."
ου δωσει συγκλεισμον αντ' αυτης και ου σταθησεται αργυριον ανταλλαγμα αυτης15 Solid gold cannot purchase it, nor can its price be paid with silver.
και ου συμβασταχθησεται χρυσιω ωφιρ εν ονυχι τιμιω και σαπφειρω16 It cannot be bought with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.
ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη χρυσιον και υαλος και το αλλαγμα αυτης σκευη χρυσα17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, nor can golden vessels reach its worth.
μετεωρα και γαβις ου μνησθησεται και ελκυσον σοφιαν υπερ τα εσωτατα18 Neither coral nor jasper should be thought of; it surpasses pearls and
ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη τοπαζιον αιθιοπιας χρυσιω καθαρω ου συμβασταχθησεται19 Arabian topaz.
η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της συνεσεως20 Whence, then, comes wisdom, and where is the place of understanding?
λεληθεν παντα ανθρωπον και απο πετεινων του ουρανου εκρυβη21 It is hid from the eyes of any beast; from the birds of the air it is concealed.
η απωλεια και ο θανατος ειπαν ακηκοαμεν δε αυτης το κλεος22 Abaddon and Death say, "Only by rumor have we heard of it."
ο θεος ευ συνεστησεν αυτης την οδον αυτος δε οιδεν τον τοπον αυτης23 God knows the way to it; it is he who is familiar with its place.
αυτος γαρ την υπ' ουρανον πασαν εφορα ειδως τα εν τη γη παντα α εποιησεν24 For he beholds the ends of the earth and sees all that is under the heavens.
ανεμων σταθμον υδατος τε μετρα25 He has weighed out the wind, and fixed the scope of the waters;
οτε εποιησεν ουτως υετον ηριθμησεν και οδον εν τιναγματι φωνας26 When he made rules for the rain and a path for the thunderbolts,
τοτε ειδεν αυτην και εξηγησατο αυτην ετοιμασας εξιχνιασεν27 Then he saw wisdom and appraised it, gave it its setting, knew it through and through.
ειπεν δε ανθρωπω ιδου η θεοσεβεια εστιν σοφια το δε απεχεσθαι απο κακων εστιν επιστημη28 And to man he said: Behold, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; and avoiding evil is understanding.
