1 L’arca del Signore rimase nel territorio dei Filistei sette mesi.	1 The ark of Yahweh was in Philistine territory for seven months.
2 Poi i Filistei convocarono i sacerdoti e gli indovini e dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare dell’arca del Signore? Indicateci il modo di rimandarla alla sua sede».	2 The Philistines then cal ed for their priests and diviners and asked, 'What shall we do with the ark ofYahweh? Tel us how to send it back to where it belongs.'
3 Risposero: «Se intendete rimandare l’arca del Dio d’Israele, non rimandatela vuota, ma pagatele un tributo di riparazione per la colpa. Allora guarirete e vi sarà noto perché non si è ritirata da voi la sua mano».	3 They replied, 'If you send the ark of the God of Israel away, you must certainly not send it away withouta gift; you must pay him a guilt offering. You wil then recover and wil realise why he continual y oppressed you.'
4 Chiesero: «Quale riparazione dobbiamo darle?». Risposero: «Secondo il numero dei prìncipi dei Filistei, cinque bubboni d’oro e cinque topi d’oro, perché unico è stato il flagello per tutti voi e per i vostri prìncipi.	4 They then asked, 'What guilt offering ought we to pay him?' They replied, 'Corresponding to the numberof Philistine chiefs: five golden tumours and five golden rats, since the same plague afflicted your chiefs as therest of you.
5 Fate dunque figure dei vostri bubboni e figure dei vostri topi, che infestano la terra, e date gloria al Dio d’Israele. Forse renderà più leggera la sua mano su di voi, sul vostro dio e sul vostro territorio.	5 So make models of your tumours and models of your rats ravaging the territory, and pay honour to theGod of Israel. Then perhaps he wil stop oppressing you, your gods and your country.
6 Perché ostinarvi come si sono ostinati gli Egiziani e il faraone? Non li hanno forse lasciati andare, dopo che egli infierì su di loro?	6 Why should you be as stubborn as Egypt and Pharaoh were? After he had brought disasters on them,did they not let the people leave?
7 Dunque fate un carro nuovo, poi prendete due mucche che allattano sulle quali non sia mai stato posto il giogo, e attaccate queste mucche al carro, togliendo loro i vitelli e riconducendoli alla stalla.	7 Now, then, take and fit out a new cart, and two milch cows that have never borne the yoke. Thenharness the cows to the cart and take their calves back to the byre.
8 Quindi prendete l’arca del Signore, collocatela sul carro e ponete gli oggetti d’oro che dovete darle in tributo di riparazione, in una cesta al suo fianco. Poi fatela partire e lasciate che se ne vada.	8 Then take the ark of Yahweh, place it on the cart, and put the golden objects which you are paying himas guilt offering in a box beside it; and then send it off on its own.
9 E state a vedere: se salirà a Bet-Semes, per la via che porta al suo territorio, è lui che ci ha provocato tutti questi mali così grandi; se no, sapremo che non ci ha colpiti la sua mano, ma per caso ci è capitato questo».	9 Watch it; if it goes up the road to its own territory, towards Beth-Shemesh, then he was responsible forthis great harm to us; but if not, we shal know that it was not his hand that struck us, and that this has happenedto us by chance.'
10 Quegli uomini fecero in tal modo. Presero due mucche che allattano, le attaccarono al carro e chiusero nella stalla i loro vitelli.	10 The people did this. They took two milch cows and harnessed them to the cart, shutting their calves inthe byre.
11 Quindi collocarono l’arca del Signore, sul carro, con la cesta e i topi d’oro e le figure delle escrescenze.	11 They then put the ark of Yahweh on the cart, with the box and the golden rats and the models of theirtumours.
12 Le mucche andarono diritte per la strada di Bet-Semes, percorrendo sicure una sola via e muggendo, ma non piegarono né a destra né a sinistra. I prìncipi dei Filistei le seguirono sino al confine con Bet-Semes.	12 The cows made straight for Beth-Shemesh, keeping to the one road, lowing as they went and turningneither to right nor to left. The Philistine chiefs followed them as far as the boundaries of Beth-Shemesh.
13 Gli abitanti di Bet-Semes stavano facendo la mietitura del grano nella pianura. Alzando gli occhi, scorsero l’arca ed esultarono a quella vista.	13 The people of Beth-Shemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the plain when they looked up andsaw the ark and went joyful y to meet it.
14 Il carro giunse al campo di Giosuè di Bet-Semes e si fermò là dove era una grossa pietra. Allora fecero a pezzi i legni del carro e offrirono le mucche in olocausto al Signore.	14 When the cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, it stopped. There was a large stonethere, and they cut up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh.
15 I leviti avevano deposto l’arca del Signore e la cesta che vi era appesa, nella quale stavano gli oggetti d’oro, e l’avevano collocata sulla grossa pietra. In quel giorno gli uomini di Bet-Semes offrirono olocausti e fecero sacrifici al Signore.	15 The Levites had taken down the ark of Yahweh and the box with it containing the golden objects andput these on the large stone. That day the people of Beth-Shemesh presented burnt offerings and madesacrifices to Yahweh.
16 I cinque prìncipi dei Filistei stettero ad osservare, poi tornarono il giorno stesso a Ekron.	16 The five chiefs of the Philistines, having witnessed this, went back to Ekron the same day.
17 Sono queste le escrescenze che i Filistei diedero in tributo di riparazione al Signore: una per Asdod, una per Gaza, una per Àscalon, una per Gat, una per Ekron.	17 The golden tumours paid by the Philistines as a guilt offering to Yahweh were as fol ows: one forAshdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;
18 Invece i topi d’oro erano pari al numero delle città filistee appartenenti ai cinque prìncipi, dalle fortezze sino ai villaggi di campagna. Ne è testimonianza fino ad oggi nel campo di Giosuè di Bet-Semes la grossa pietra sulla quale avevano posto l’arca del Signore.	18 and golden rats to the number of al the Philistine towns, those of the five chiefs, from fortified townsdown to open villages: stil to this day the large stone in the field of Joshua of Beth-Shemesh, on which they putthe ark of Yahweh, is a witness.
19 Ma il Signore colpì gli uomini di Bet-Semes, perché avevano guardato nell’arca del Signore; colpì nel popolo settanta persone su cinquantamila e il popolo fu in lutto, perché il Signore aveva inflitto alla loro gente questo grave colpo.	19 Of the people of Beth-Shemesh the sons of Jeconiah had not rejoiced when they saw the ark ofYahweh, and Yahweh struck down seventy of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had struck them sofiercely.
20 Gli uomini di Bet-Semes allora esclamarono: «Chi mai potrà stare al cospetto del Signore, questo Dio così santo? La manderemo via da noi; ma da chi?».	20 The people of Beth-Shemesh then said, 'Who can stand his ground before Yahweh, this holy God? Towhom shal he go, so that we are rid of him?'
21 Perciò inviarono messaggeri agli abitanti di Kiriat-Iearìm a dire: «I Filistei hanno restituito l’arca del Signore. Scendete e portatela presso di voi».	21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-Jearim, to say, 'The Philistines have sent backthe ark of Yahweh; come down and take it up to your town.'
