1 Dopo questi fatti, Gesù se ne andava per la Galilea; infatti non voleva più percorrere la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 Si avvicinava intanto la festa dei Giudei, quella delle Capanne.	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 I suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Parti di qui e va’ nella Giudea, perché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu compi.	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 Nessuno infatti, se vuole essere riconosciuto pubblicamente, agisce di nascosto. Se fai queste cose, manifesta te stesso al mondo!».	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 Neppure i suoi fratelli infatti credevano in lui.	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 Gesù allora disse loro: «Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo invece è sempre pronto.	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 Il mondo non può odiare voi, ma odia me, perché di esso io attesto che le sue opere sono cattive.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 Salite voi alla festa; io non salgo a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto».	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 Dopo aver detto queste cose, restò nella Galilea.	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 Ma quando i suoi fratelli salirono per la festa, vi salì anche lui: non apertamente, ma quasi di nascosto.	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 I Giudei intanto lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: «Dov’è quel tale?».	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 E la folla, sottovoce, faceva un gran parlare di lui. Alcuni infatti dicevano: «È buono!». Altri invece dicevano: «No, inganna la gente!».	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 Nessuno però parlava di lui in pubblico, per paura dei Giudei.	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 Quando ormai si era a metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare.	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 I Giudei ne erano meravigliati e dicevano: «Come mai costui conosce le Scritture, senza avere studiato?».	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 Gesù rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato.	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 Chi vuol fare la sua volontà, riconoscerà se questa dottrina viene da Dio, o se io parlo da me stesso.	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 Chi parla da se stesso, cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che lo ha mandato è veritiero, e in lui non c’è ingiustizia.	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 Non è stato forse Mosè a darvi la Legge? Eppure nessuno di voi osserva la Legge! Perché cercate di uccidermi?».	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 Rispose la folla: «Sei indemoniato! Chi cerca di ucciderti?».	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 Disse loro Gesù: «Un’opera sola ho compiuto, e tutti ne siete meravigliati.	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 Per questo Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione – non che essa venga da Mosè, ma dai patriarchi – e voi circoncidete un uomo anche di sabato.	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 Ora, se un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato perché non sia trasgredita la legge di Mosè, voi vi sdegnate contro di me perché di sabato ho guarito interamente un uomo?	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 Non giudicate secondo le apparenze; giudicate con giusto giudizio!».	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 Intanto alcuni abitanti di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Non è costui quello che cercano di uccidere?	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 Ecco, egli parla liberamente, eppure non gli dicono nulla. I capi hanno forse riconosciuto davvero che egli è il Cristo?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 Ma costui sappiamo di dov’è; il Cristo invece, quando verrà, nessuno saprà di dove sia».	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 Gesù allora, mentre insegnava nel tempio, esclamò: «Certo, voi mi conoscete e sapete di dove sono. Eppure non sono venuto da me stesso, ma chi mi ha mandato è veritiero, e voi non lo conoscete.	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 Io lo conosco, perché vengo da lui ed egli mi ha mandato».	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 Cercavano allora di arrestarlo, ma nessuno riuscì a mettere le mani su di lui, perché non era ancora giunta la sua ora.	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 Molti della folla invece credettero in lui, e dicevano: «Il Cristo, quando verrà, compirà forse segni più grandi di quelli che ha fatto costui?».	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 I farisei udirono che la gente andava dicendo sottovoce queste cose di lui. Perciò i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei mandarono delle guardie per arrestarlo.	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 Gesù disse: «Ancora per poco tempo sono con voi; poi vado da colui che mi ha mandato.	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove sono io, voi non potete venire».	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 Dissero dunque tra loro i Giudei: «Dove sta per andare costui, che noi non potremo trovarlo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi fra i Greci e insegnerà ai Greci?	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 Che discorso è quello che ha fatto: “Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete”, e: “Dove sono io, voi non potete venire”?».	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 Nell’ultimo giorno, il grande giorno della festa, Gesù, ritto in piedi, gridò: «Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me, e beva	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 chi crede in me. Come dice la Scrittura: Dal suo grembo sgorgheranno fiumi di acqua viva».	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 Questo egli disse dello Spirito che avrebbero ricevuto i credenti in lui: infatti non vi era ancora lo Spirito, perché Gesù non era ancora stato glorificato.	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 All’udire queste parole, alcuni fra la gente dicevano: «Costui è davvero il profeta!».	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 Altri dicevano: «Costui è il Cristo!». Altri invece dicevano: «Il Cristo viene forse dalla Galilea?	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 Non dice la Scrittura: Dalla stirpe di Davide e da Betlemme, il villaggio di Davide, verrà il Cristo?».	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 E tra la gente nacque un dissenso riguardo a lui.	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 Alcuni di loro volevano arrestarlo, ma nessuno mise le mani su di lui.	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 Le guardie tornarono quindi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei e questi dissero loro: «Perché non lo avete condotto qui?».	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 Risposero le guardie: «Mai un uomo ha parlato così!».	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 Ma i farisei replicarono loro: «Vi siete lasciati ingannare anche voi?	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 Ha forse creduto in lui qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei?	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 Ma questa gente, che non conosce la Legge, è maledetta!».	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 Allora Nicodèmo, che era andato precedentemente da Gesù, ed era uno di loro, disse:	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 «La nostra Legge giudica forse un uomo prima di averlo ascoltato e di sapere ciò che fa?».	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 Gli risposero: «Sei forse anche tu della Galilea? Studia, e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta!».	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 E ciascuno tornò a casa sua.	53 They al went home,
