Deuteronomio 4

BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ora, Israele, ascolta le leggi e le norme che io vi insegno, affinché le mettiate in pratica, perché viviate ed entriate in possesso della terra che il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, sta per darvi.	1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you.
2 Non aggiungerete nulla a ciò che io vi comando e non ne toglierete nulla; ma osserverete i comandi del Signore, vostro Dio, che io vi prescrivo.	2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.
3 I vostri occhi videro ciò che il Signore fece a Baal-Peor: come il Signore, tuo Dio, abbia sterminato in mezzo a te quanti avevano seguito Baal-Peor;	3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor;
4 ma voi che vi manteneste fedeli al Signore, vostro Dio, siete oggi tutti in vita.	4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.
5 Vedete, io vi ho insegnato leggi e norme come il Signore, mio Dio, mi ha ordinato, perché le mettiate in pratica nella terra in cui state per entrare per prenderne possesso.	5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession.
6 Le osserverete dunque, e le metterete in pratica, perché quella sarà la vostra saggezza e la vostra intelligenza agli occhi dei popoli, i quali, udendo parlare di tutte queste leggi, diranno: “Questa grande nazione è il solo popolo saggio e intelligente”.	6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!"
7 Infatti quale grande nazione ha gli dèi così vicini a sé, come il Signore, nostro Dio, è vicino a noi ogni volta che lo invochiamo?	7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim?
8 E quale grande nazione ha leggi e norme giuste come è tutta questa legislazione che io oggi vi do?	8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today?
9 Ma bada a te e guardati bene dal dimenticare le cose che i tuoi occhi hanno visto, non ti sfuggano dal cuore per tutto il tempo della tua vita: le insegnerai anche ai tuoi figli e ai figli dei tuoi figli.	9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.
10 Il giorno in cui sei comparso davanti al Signore, tuo Dio, sull’Oreb, il Signore mi disse: “Radunami il popolo e io farò loro udire le mie parole, perché imparino a temermi per tutti i giorni della loro vita sulla terra, e le insegnino ai loro figli”.	10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children."
11 Voi vi avvicinaste e vi fermaste ai piedi del monte; il monte ardeva, con il fuoco che si innalzava fino alla sommità del cielo, fra tenebre, nuvole e oscurità.	11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.
12 Il Signore vi parlò dal fuoco; voi udivate il suono delle parole ma non vedevate alcuna figura: vi era soltanto una voce.	12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice.
13 Egli vi annunciò la sua alleanza, che vi comandò di osservare, cioè le dieci parole, e le scrisse su due tavole di pietra.	13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone.
14 In quella circostanza il Signore mi ordinò di insegnarvi leggi e norme, perché voi le metteste in pratica nella terra in cui state per entrare per prenderne possesso.	14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.
15 State bene in guardia per la vostra vita: poiché non vedeste alcuna figura, quando il Signore vi parlò sull’Oreb dal fuoco,	15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire,
16 non vi corrompete, dunque, e non fatevi l’immagine scolpita di qualche idolo, la figura di maschio o di femmina,	16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman,
17 la figura di qualunque animale che è sopra la terra, la figura di un uccello che vola nei cieli,	17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,
18 la figura di una bestia che striscia sul suolo, la figura di un pesce che vive nelle acque sotto la terra.	18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.
19 Quando alzi gli occhi al cielo e vedi il sole, la luna, le stelle e tutto l’esercito del cielo, tu non lasciarti indurre a prostrarti davanti a quelle cose e a servirle; cose che il Signore, tuo Dio, ha dato in sorte a tutti i popoli che sono sotto tutti i cieli.	19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven,
20 Voi, invece, il Signore vi ha presi, vi ha fatti uscire dal crogiuolo di ferro, dall’Egitto, perché foste per lui come popolo di sua proprietà, quale oggi siete.	20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today.
21 Il Signore si adirò contro di me per causa vostra e giurò che io non avrei attraversato il Giordano e non sarei entrato nella buona terra che il Signore, tuo Dio, sta per darti in eredità.	21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.
22 Difatti io morirò in questa terra, senza attraversare il Giordano; ma voi lo attraverserete e possederete quella buona terra.	22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land.
23 Guardatevi dal dimenticare l’alleanza che il Signore, vostro Dio, ha stabilito con voi e dal farvi alcuna immagine scolpita di qualunque cosa, riguardo alla quale il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha dato un comando,	23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;
24 perché il Signore, tuo Dio, è fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.	24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
25 Quando avrete generato figli e nipoti e sarete invecchiati nella terra, se vi corromperete, se vi farete un’immagine scolpita di qualunque cosa, se farete ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, tuo Dio, per irritarlo,	25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-
26 io chiamo oggi a testimone contro di voi il cielo e la terra: voi certo scomparirete presto dalla terra in cui state per entrare per prenderne possesso, attraversando il Giordano. Voi non vi rimarrete lunghi giorni, ma sarete tutti sterminati.	26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed.
27 Il Signore vi disperderà fra i popoli e non resterete che un piccolo numero fra le nazioni dove il Signore vi condurrà.	27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you.
28 Là servirete a dèi fatti da mano d’uomo, di legno e di pietra, i quali non vedono, non mangiano, non odorano.	28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel .
29 Ma di là cercherai il Signore, tuo Dio, e lo troverai, se lo cercherai con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima.	29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him.
30 Nella tua disperazione tutte queste cose ti accadranno; negli ultimi giorni però tornerai al Signore, tuo Dio, e ascolterai la sua voce,	30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice.
31 poiché il Signore, tuo Dio, è un Dio misericordioso, non ti abbandonerà e non ti distruggerà, non dimenticherà l’alleanza che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.	31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors.
32 Interroga pure i tempi antichi, che furono prima di te: dal giorno in cui Dio creò l’uomo sulla terra e da un’estremità all’altra dei cieli, vi fu mai cosa grande come questa e si udì mai cosa simile a questa?	32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard?
33 Che cioè un popolo abbia udito la voce di Dio parlare dal fuoco, come l’hai udita tu, e che rimanesse vivo?	33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive?
34 O ha mai tentato un dio di andare a scegliersi una nazione in mezzo a un’altra con prove, segni, prodigi e battaglie, con mano potente e braccio teso e grandi terrori, come fece per voi il Signore, vostro Dio, in Egitto, sotto i tuoi occhi?	34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?
35 Tu sei stato fatto spettatore di queste cose, perché tu sappia che il Signore è Dio e che non ve n’è altri fuori di lui.	35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.
36 Dal cielo ti ha fatto udire la sua voce per educarti; sulla terra ti ha mostrato il suo grande fuoco e tu hai udito le sue parole che venivano dal fuoco.	36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.
37 Poiché ha amato i tuoi padri, ha scelto la loro discendenza dopo di loro e ti ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto con la sua presenza e con la sua grande potenza,	37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,
38 scacciando dinanzi a te nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, facendoti entrare nella loro terra e dandotene il possesso, com'è oggi.	38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today.
39 Sappi dunque oggi e medita bene nel tuo cuore che il Signore è Dio lassù nei cieli e quaggiù sulla terra: non ve n’è altro.	39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other.
40 Osserva dunque le sue leggi e i suoi comandi che oggi ti do, perché sia felice tu e i tuoi figli dopo di te e perché tu resti a lungo nel paese che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti dà per sempre».	40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'
41 In quel tempo Mosè scelse tre città oltre il Giordano, a oriente,	41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,
42 perché servissero di asilo all’omicida che avesse ucciso il suo prossimo involontariamente, senza averlo odiato prima, perché potesse aver salva la vita rifugiandosi in una di quelle città.	42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.
43 Esse furono Beser, nel deserto, sull’altopiano, per i Rubeniti, Ramot in Gàlaad, per i Gaditi, e Golan in Basan, per i Manassiti.	43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.
44 Questa è la legge che Mosè espose agli Israeliti.	44 This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.
45 Queste sono le istruzioni, le leggi e le norme che Mosè diede agli Israeliti quando furono usciti dall’Egitto,	45 These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they hadleft Egypt,
46 oltre il Giordano, nella valle di fronte a Bet-Peor, nella terra di Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon, e che Mosè e gli Israeliti sconfissero quando furono usciti dall’Egitto.	46 beyond the Jordan in the val ey near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who hadlived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,
47 Essi avevano preso possesso della terra di lui e del paese di Og, re di Basan – due re Amorrei che stavano oltre il Giordano, a oriente –,	47 and had taken possession of his country, as wel as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings tothe east beyond the Jordan,
48 da Aroèr, che è sulla riva del torrente Arnon, fino al monte Sirion, cioè l’Ermon,	48 from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, al the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -
49 con tutta l’Araba oltre il Giordano, a oriente, fino al mare dell’Araba sotto le pendici del Pisga.	49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah.
