Deuteronomio 20

BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando andrai in guerra contro i tuoi nemici e vedrai cavalli e carri e forze superiori a te, non temerli, perché è con te il Signore, tuo Dio, che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d’Egitto.	1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.
2 Quando sarete vicini alla battaglia, il sacerdote si farà avanti, parlerà al popolo	2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.
3 e gli dirà: “Ascolta, Israele! Voi oggi siete prossimi a dar battaglia ai vostri nemici. Il vostro cuore non venga meno. Non temete, non vi smarrite e non vi spaventate dinanzi a loro,	3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.
4 perché il Signore, vostro Dio, cammina con voi, per combattere per voi contro i vostri nemici e per salvarvi”.	4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."
5 Gli scribi diranno al popolo: “C’è qualcuno che abbia costruito una casa nuova e non l’abbia ancora inaugurata? Vada, torni a casa, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro inauguri la casa.	5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.
6 C’è qualcuno che abbia piantato una vigna e non ne abbia ancora goduto il primo frutto? Vada, torni a casa, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro ne goda il primo frutto.	6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.
7 C’è qualcuno che si sia fidanzato con una donna e non l’abbia ancora sposata? Vada, torni a casa, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro la sposi”.	7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."
8 Gli scribi aggiungeranno al popolo: “C’è qualcuno che abbia paura e a cui venga meno il coraggio? Vada, torni a casa, perché il coraggio dei suoi fratelli non venga a mancare come il suo”.	8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"
9 Quando gli scribi avranno finito di parlare al popolo, costituiranno i comandanti delle schiere alla testa del popolo.	9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.
10 Quando ti avvicinerai a una città per attaccarla, le offrirai prima la pace.	10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.
11 Se accetta la pace e ti apre le sue porte, tutto il popolo che vi si troverà ti sarà tributario e ti servirà.	11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.
12 Ma se non vuol far pace con te e vorrà la guerra, allora l’assedierai.	12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.
13 Quando il Signore, tuo Dio, l’avrà data nelle tue mani, ne colpirai a fil di spada tutti i maschi,	13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.
14 ma le donne, i bambini, il bestiame e quanto sarà nella città, tutto il suo bottino, li prenderai come tua preda. Mangerai il bottino dei tuoi nemici, che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti avrà dato.	14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.
15 Così farai per tutte le città che sono molto lontane da te e che non sono città di popolazioni a te vicine.	15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.
16 Soltanto nelle città di questi popoli che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti dà in eredità, non lascerai in vita alcun vivente,	16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.
17 ma li voterai allo sterminio: cioè gli Ittiti, gli Amorrei, i Cananei, i Perizziti, gli Evei e i Gebusei, come il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha comandato di fare,	17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,
18 perché essi non v’insegnino a commettere tutti gli abomini che fanno per i loro dèi e voi non pecchiate contro il Signore, vostro Dio.	18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.
19 Quando cingerai d’assedio una città per lungo tempo, per espugnarla e conquistarla, non ne distruggerai gli alberi colpendoli con la scure; ne mangerai il frutto, ma non li taglierai: l’albero della campagna è forse un uomo, per essere coinvolto nell’assedio?	19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?
20 Soltanto potrai distruggere e recidere gli alberi che saprai non essere alberi da frutto, per costruire opere d’assedio contro la città che è in guerra con te, finché non sia caduta.	20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'
