1 In quei giorni venne Giovanni il Battista e predicava nel deserto della Giudea	1 Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,
2 dicendo: «Convertitevi, perché il regno dei cieli è vicino!».	2 and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
3 Egli infatti è colui del quale aveva parlato il profeta Isaia quando disse: Voce di uno che grida nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i suoi sentieri!	3 For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”
4 E lui, Giovanni, portava un vestito di peli di cammello e una cintura di pelle attorno ai fianchi; il suo cibo erano cavallette e miele selvatico.	4 Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Allora Gerusalemme, tutta la Giudea e tutta la zona lungo il Giordano accorrevano a lui	5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.
6 e si facevano battezzare da lui nel fiume Giordano, confessando i loro peccati.	6 And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.
7 Vedendo molti farisei e sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: «Razza di vipere! Chi vi ha fatto credere di poter sfuggire all’ira imminente?	7 Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned to you to flee from the approaching wrath?
8 Fate dunque un frutto degno della conversione,	8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.
9 e non crediate di poter dire dentro di voi: “Abbiamo Abramo per padre!”. Perché io vi dico che da queste pietre Dio può suscitare figli ad Abramo.	9 And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
10 Già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi; perciò ogni albero che non dà buon frutto viene tagliato e gettato nel fuoco.	10 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
11 Io vi battezzo nell’acqua per la conversione; ma colui che viene dopo di me è più forte di me e io non sono degno di portargli i sandali; egli vi battezzerà in Spirito Santo e fuoco.	11 Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
12 Tiene in mano la pala e pulirà la sua aia e raccoglierà il suo frumento nel granaio, ma brucerà la paglia con un fuoco inestinguibile».	12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
13 Allora Gesù dalla Galilea venne al Giordano da Giovanni, per farsi battezzare da lui.	13 Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.
14 Giovanni però voleva impedirglielo, dicendo: «Sono io che ho bisogno di essere battezzato da te, e tu vieni da me?».	14 But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
15 Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Lascia fare per ora, perché conviene che adempiamo ogni giustizia». Allora egli lo lasciò fare.	15 And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.
16 Appena battezzato, Gesù uscì dall’acqua: ed ecco, si aprirono per lui i cieli ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio discendere come una colomba e venire sopra di lui.	16 And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.
17 Ed ecco una voce dal cielo che diceva: «Questi è il Figlio mio, l’amato: in lui ho posto il mio compiacimento».	17 And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
