1 Quando Demetrio seppe che era morto Nicànore ed era stato distrutto il suo esercito in combattimento, decise di mandare di nuovo Bàcchide e Àlcimo in Giudea e l’ala destra dell’esercito con loro.	1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah a second time, and with them the right wing of the army.
2 Seguirono la via di Gàlgala e si accamparono sopra Mesalòt in Arbela; la occuparono e vi fecero morire molti uomini.	2 They went by the road which leads to Gilgal and encamped against Mesaloth in Arbela, and they took it and killed many people.
3 Nel primo mese dell’anno centocinquantadue posero il campo contro Gerusalemme.	3 In the first month of the one hundred and fifty-second year * they encamped against Jerusalem;
4 Poi lo tolsero e si portarono a Berea con ventimila fanti e duemila cavalieri.	4 then they marched off and went to Berea with twenty thousand foot soldiers and two thousand cavalry.
5 Giuda era accampato a Elasà con tremila uomini scelti.	5 Now Judas was encamped in Elasa, and with him were three thousand picked men.
6 Quando videro la massa di un esercito così numeroso, ne rimasero sgomenti e molti si dileguarono dal campo e non restarono che ottocento uomini.	6 When they saw the huge number of the enemy forces, they were greatly frightened, and many slipped away from the camp, until no more than eight hundred of them were left.
7 Giuda vide che il suo esercito si disgregava mentre la battaglia incalzava; si sentì venire meno il cuore, perché non aveva possibilità di radunare i suoi,	7 When Judas saw that his army had slipped away and the battle was imminent, he was crushed in spirit, for he had no time to assemble them.
8 e tutto affranto disse ai superstiti: «Alziamoci e andiamo contro i nostri avversari, nella speranza di poterli debellare».	8 He became faint, but he said to those who were left, "Let us rise and go up against our enemies. We may be able to fight them."
9 Ma lo dissuadevano dicendo: «Per il momento non riusciremo a fare altro che metterci in salvo, ma torneremo poi con i nostri fratelli e combatteremo contro di loro; da soli siamo troppo pochi».	9 But they tried to dissuade him, saying, "We are not able. Let us rather save our own lives now, and let us come back with our brethren and fight them; we are too few."
10 Giuda disse: «Non faremo mai una cosa simile: fuggire da loro! Se è giunta la nostra ora, moriamo da eroi per i nostri fratelli e non lasciamo ombra alla nostra gloria».	10 But Judas said, "Far be it from us to do such a thing as to flee from them. If our time has come, let us die bravely for our brethren, and leave no cause to question our honor."
11 L’esercito nemico uscì dal campo, schierandosi contro i Giudei: la cavalleria si divise in due ali e i frombolieri e gli arcieri precedevano lo schieramento; i più validi erano tutti in prima fila e Bàcchide stava all’ala destra.	11 Then the army of Bacchides * marched out from the camp and took its stand for the encounter. The cavalry was divided into two companies, and the slingers and the archers went ahead of the army, as did all the chief warriors.
12 La falange si mosse avanzando ai due lati, al suono delle trombe; anche dalla parte di Giuda si diede fiato alle trombe.	12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two companies, the phalanx advanced to the sound of the trumpets; and the men with Judas also blew their trumpets.
13 La terra fu scossa dal fragore degli eserciti. Si scatenò la battaglia che durò dal mattino fino a sera.	13 The earth was shaken by the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning till evening.
14 Giuda notò che Bàcchide e la parte più forte dell’esercito erano a destra: allora si unirono a lui tutti i più coraggiosi	14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right; then all the stouthearted men went with him,
15 e fu travolta l’ala destra dal loro urto ed egli la inseguì fino al monte di Azoto.	15 and they crushed the right wing, and he pursued them as far as Mount Azotus.
16 Ma quelli dell’ala sinistra, vedendo che era stata sconfitta l’ala destra, si volsero sugli stessi passi di Giuda e dei suoi uomini assalendoli alle spalle.	16 When those on the left wing saw that the right wing was crushed, they turned and followed close behind Judas and his men.
17 Così si accese la battaglia e caddero molti feriti a morte, da una parte e dall’altra;	17 The battle became desperate, and many on both sides were wounded and fell.
18 cadde anche Giuda e gli altri fuggirono.	18 Judas also fell, and the rest fled.
19 Giònata e Simone raccolsero Giuda, loro fratello, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri, a Modin.	19 Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein,
20 Tutto Israele lo pianse: furono in gran lutto e fecero lamenti per molti giorni, esclamando:	20 and wept for him. And all Israel made great lamentation for him; they mourned many days and said,
21 «Come è potuto cadere l’eroe che salvava Israele?».	21 "How is the mighty fallen, the savior of Israel!"
22 Il resto delle imprese di Giuda e delle battaglie, degli eroismi di cui diede prova e dei suoi titoli di gloria non è stato scritto, perché troppo grande era il loro numero.	22 Now the rest of the acts of Judas, and his wars and the brave deeds that he did, and his greatness, have not been recorded, for they were very many.
23 Dopo la morte di Giuda riapparvero gli iniqui in tutto il territorio d’Israele e risorsero tutti gli operatori d’ingiustizia.	23 After the death of Judas, the lawless emerged in all parts of Israel; all the doers of injustice appeared.
24 In quei giorni sopravvenne una terribile carestia e gli stessi abitanti della regione passarono dalla loro parte.	24 In those days a very great famine occurred, and the country deserted with them to the enemy.
25 Bàcchide scelse uomini rinnegati e li fece padroni della regione.	25 And Bacchides chose the ungodly and put them in charge of the country.
26 Si diedero a ricercare e braccare gli amici di Giuda e li conducevano da Bàcchide, che si vendicava di loro e li scherniva.	26 They sought and searched for the friends of Judas, and brought them to Bacchides, and he took vengeance on them and made sport of them.
27 Ci fu grande tribolazione in Israele, come non si verificava dal giorno in cui non era più apparso un profeta in mezzo a loro.	27 Thus there was great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them.
28 Allora tutti gli amici di Giuda si radunarono e dissero a Giònata:	28 Then all the friends of Judas assembled and said to Jonathan,
29 «Da quando è morto tuo fratello Giuda, non c’è uomo simile a lui per condurre l’azione contro i nemici e Bàcchide, e contro gli avversari della nostra nazione.	29 "Since the death of your brother Judas there has been no one like him to go against our enemies and Bacchides, and to deal with those of our nation who hate us.
30 Ora noi oggi eleggiamo te nostro capo e condottiero al suo posto, per combattere le nostre battaglie».	30 So now we have chosen you today to take his place as our ruler and leader, to fight our battle."
31 Giònata assunse il comando in quella occasione e prese il posto di Giuda, suo fratello.	31 And Jonathan at that time accepted the leadership and took the place of Judas his brother.
32 Bàcchide, avutane notizia, cercava di ucciderlo.	32 When Bacchides learned of this, he tried to kill him.
33 Ma Giònata e Simone, suo fratello, con tutti i loro seguaci, lo seppero e fuggirono nel deserto di Tekòa e si accamparono presso la cisterna di Asfar.	33 But Jonathan and Simon his brother and all who were with him heard of it, and they fled into the wilderness of Tekoa and camped by the water of the pool of Asphar.
34 Bàcchide però lo venne a sapere in giorno di sabato e si portò anche lui con tutto il suo esercito al di là del Giordano.	34 Bacchides found this out on the sabbath day, and he with all his army crossed the Jordan.
35 Giònata inviò suo fratello, capo della turba, a chiedere ai Nabatei, suoi amici, di poter deporre presso di loro i propri equipaggiamenti, che erano abbondanti.	35 And Jonathan * sent his brother as leader of the multitude and begged the Nabateans, who were his friends, for permission to store with them the great amount of baggage which they had.
36 Ma i figli di Iambrì, che abitavano a Màdaba, fecero una razzia e catturarono Giovanni con tutte le cose che aveva e portarono via tutto.	36 But the sons of Jambri from Medeba came out and seized John and all that he had, and departed with it.
37 Dopo questo fatto riferirono a Giònata e a Simone, suo fratello: «I figli di Iambrì celebrano una grande festa di nozze e da Nadabàt conducono la sposa, figlia di uno dei grandi magnati di Canaan, con corteo solenne».	37 After these things it was reported to Jonathan and Simon his brother, "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and are conducting the bride, a daughter of one of the great nobles of Canaan, from Nadabath with a large escort."
38 Si ricordarono allora del sangue del loro fratello Giovanni, perciò si mossero e si appostarono in un antro del monte.	38 And they remembered the blood of John their brother, and went up and hid under cover of the mountain.
39 Ed ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro un corteo numeroso e festante e lo sposo con gli amici e i fratelli, che avanzava incontro al corteo, con tamburelli e strumenti musicali e grande apparato.	39 They raised their eyes and looked, and saw a tumultuous procession with much baggage; and the bridegroom came out with his friends and his brothers to meet them with tambourines and musicians and many weapons.
40 Balzando sopra di loro dall’appostamento in cui si trovavano, li trucidarono; molti caddero colpiti a morte mentre gli altri ripararono sul monte, ed essi presero le loro spoglie.	40 Then they rushed upon them from the ambush and began killing them. Many were wounded and fell, and the rest fled to the mountain; and they took all their goods.
41 Le nozze furono mutate in lutto e i suoni delle loro musiche in lamento.	41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning and the voice of their musicians into a funeral dirge.
42 Così vendicarono il sangue del loro fratello e ritornarono nelle paludi del Giordano.	42 And when they had fully avenged the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of the Jordan.
43 Bàcchide ne ebbe notizia e venne in giorno di sabato fin sulle sponde del Giordano con un numeroso esercito.	43 When Bacchides heard of this, he came with a large force on the sabbath day to the banks of the Jordan.
44 Giònata disse ai suoi: «Alziamoci e combattiamo per la nostra vita, perché oggi non è come ieri e l’altro ieri.	44 And Jonathan said to those with him, "Let us rise up now and fight for our lives, for today things are not as they were before.
45 Ecco, abbiamo i nemici di fronte a noi e alle spalle, dall’uno e dall’altro lato abbiamo l’acqua del Giordano, la palude e la boscaglia: non c’è possibilità di scampo.	45 For look! the battle is in front of us and behind us; the water of the Jordan is on this side and on that, with marsh and thicket; there is no place to turn.
46 Alzate perciò ora le vostre grida al Cielo, perché possiate salvarvi dalla mano dei vostri nemici».	46 Cry out now to Heaven that you may be delivered from the hands of our enemies."
47 E si attaccò battaglia. Giònata stese la mano per colpire Bàcchide, ma questi lo scansò e si tirò indietro.	47 So the battle began, and Jonathan stretched out his hand to strike Bacchides, but he eluded him and went to the rear.
48 Allora Giònata e i suoi uomini si gettarono nel Giordano e raggiunsero a nuoto l’altra sponda; ma gli altri non passarono il Giordano per inseguirli.	48 Then Jonathan and the men with him leaped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, and the enemy * did not cross the Jordan to attack them.
49 Dalla parte di Bàcchide caddero in quella giornata circa mille uomini.	49 And about one thousand of Bacchides' men fell that day.
50 Bàcchide poi tornò a Gerusalemme ed edificò fortezze in tutta la Giudea: le fortezze di Gerico, Èmmaus, Bet-Oron, Betel, Tamnata, Piratòn e Tefon, con mura alte, porte e sbarre, e	50 Bacchides * then returned to Jerusalem and built strong cities in Judea: the fortress in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Beth-horon, and Bethel, and Timnath, and * Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.
51 vi pose un presidio per molestare Israele.	51 And he placed garrisons in them to harass Israel.
52 Fortificò anche la città di Bet-Sur, Ghezer e la Cittadella e vi stabilì milizie e vettovaglie.	52 He also fortified the city of Beth-zur, and Gazara, and the citadel, and in them he put troops and stores of food.
53 Prese come ostaggi i figli dei capi della regione e li pose come prigionieri nella Cittadella a Gerusalemme.	53 And he took the sons of the leading men of the land as hostages and put them under guard in the citadel at Jerusalem.
54 Nell’anno centocinquantatré, nel secondo mese, Àlcimo ordinò di demolire il muro del cortile interno del santuario; distrusse così l’opera dei profeti. Si incominciò dunque a demolire.	54 In the one hundred and fifty-third year, * in the second month, Alcimus gave orders to tear down the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary. He tore down the work of the prophets!
55 Ma in quel tempo Àlcimo ebbe un grave malore e la sua opera fu interrotta. La sua bocca rimase impedita e paralizzata, e non poteva più parlare né dare disposizioni per la sua casa.	55 But he only began to tear it down, for at that time Alcimus was stricken and his work was hindered; his mouth was stopped and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer say a word or give commands concerning his house.
56 Àlcimo morì in quel tempo con grande tormento.	56 And Alcimus died at that time in great agony.
57 Bàcchide, vedendo che Àlcimo era morto, se ne tornò presso il re, e la Giudea rimase tranquilla per due anni.	57 When Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king, and the land of Judah had rest for two years.
58 Tutti gli iniqui tennero questo consiglio: «Ecco, Giònata e i suoi vivono tranquilli e sicuri. Noi dunque faremo venire Bàcchide, che li catturerà tutti in una sola notte».	58 Then all the lawless plotted and said, "See! Jonathan and his men are living in quiet and confidence. So now let us bring Bacchides back, and he will capture them all in one night."
59 Andarono e tennero consiglio da lui.	59 And they went and consulted with him.
60 Egli si mosse per venire con un esercito numeroso e mandò di nascosto lettere a tutti i suoi fautori nella Giudea, perché s’impadronissero di Giònata e dei suoi. Ma non vi riuscirono, perché era stata svelata la loro trama.	60 He started to come with a large force, and secretly sent letters to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his men; but they were unable to do it, because their plan became known.
61 Anzi, questi presero una cinquantina di uomini, tra i promotori di tale scelleratezza nel paese, e li misero a morte.	61 And Jonathan's men * seized about fifty of the men of the country who were leaders in this treachery, and killed them.
62 Poi Giònata e Simone con i loro uomini si ritirarono a Bet-Basì nel deserto, ricostruirono le sue rovine e la fortificarono.	62 Then Jonathan with his men, and Simon, withdrew to Bethbasi in the wilderness; he rebuilt the parts of it that had been demolished, and they fortified it.
63 Lo seppe Bàcchide; radunò la sua gente e avvisò quelli della Giudea.	63 When Bacchides learned of this, he assembled all his forces, and sent orders to the men of Judea.
64 Quindi andò ad accamparsi presso Bet-Basì e l’attaccò per molti giorni allestendo anche macchine.	64 Then he came and encamped against Bethbasi; he fought against it for many days and made machines of war.
65 Giònata lasciò Simone, suo fratello, nella città e uscì nella regione, percorrendola con un drappello di armati.	65 But Jonathan left Simon his brother in the city, while he went out into the country; and he went with only a few men.
66 Batté Odomerà con i suoi fratelli e i figli di Fasiròn nel loro attendamento. Cominciarono così a battersi e aumentarono di forze.	66 He struck down Odomera and his brothers and the sons of Phasiron in their tents.
67 Simone, a sua volta, e i suoi fecero una sortita dalla città e incendiarono le macchine.	67 Then he * began to attack and went into battle with his forces; and Simon and his men sallied out from the city and set fire to the machines of war.
68 Poi attaccarono Bàcchide, che fu da loro sconfitto, e lo posero in grande angustia, perché il suo piano e la sua impresa erano andati a vuoto.	68 They fought with Bacchides, and he was crushed by them. They distressed him greatly, for his plan and his expedition had been in vain.
69 Si rivolse con rabbia contro quegli iniqui, che l’avevano consigliato di venire in quella regione, e ne mandò a morte molti; poi decise di ritornare nella sua terra.	69 So he was greatly enraged at the lawless men who had counseled him to come into the country, and he killed many of them. Then he decided to depart to his own land.
70 Giònata lo seppe e gli mandò messaggeri per concludere la pace e scambiare i prigionieri.	70 When Jonathan learned of this, he sent ambassadors to him to make peace with him and obtain release of the captives.
71 Quegli accettò e fece secondo le sue proposte, giurandogli che non gli avrebbe recato alcun male per il resto dei suoi giorni;	71 He agreed, and did as he said; and he swore to Jonathan * that he would not try to harm him as long as he lived.
72 gli restituì i prigionieri che prima aveva catturato nella Giudea e, messosi sulla via del ritorno, se ne andò nella sua terra e non volle più tornare nel loro territorio.	72 He restored to him the captives whom he had formerly taken from the land of Judah; then he turned and departed to his own land, and came no more into their territory.
73 Così si riposò la spada in Israele. Giònata si stabilì a Micmas. Incominciò a governare il popolo e fece sparire i rinnegati da Israele.	73 Thus the sword ceased from Israel. And Jonathan dwelt in Michmash. And Jonathan began to judge the people, and he destroyed the ungodly out of Israel.
