1 Quando Demetrio seppe che era morto Nicànore ed era stato distrutto il suo esercito in combattimento, decise di mandare di nuovo Bàcchide e Àlcimo in Giudea e l’ala destra dell’esercito con loro.	1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.
2 Seguirono la via di Gàlgala e si accamparono sopra Mesalòt in Arbela; la occuparono e vi fecero morire molti uomini.	2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.
3 Nel primo mese dell’anno centocinquantadue posero il campo contro Gerusalemme.	3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;
4 Poi lo tolsero e si portarono a Berea con ventimila fanti e duemila cavalieri.	4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.
5 Giuda era accampato a Elasà con tremila uomini scelti.	5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.
6 Quando videro la massa di un esercito così numeroso, ne rimasero sgomenti e molti si dileguarono dal campo e non restarono che ottocento uomini.	6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.
7 Giuda vide che il suo esercito si disgregava mentre la battaglia incalzava; si sentì venire meno il cuore, perché non aveva possibilità di radunare i suoi,	7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.
8 e tutto affranto disse ai superstiti: «Alziamoci e andiamo contro i nostri avversari, nella speranza di poterli debellare».	8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'
9 Ma lo dissuadevano dicendo: «Per il momento non riusciremo a fare altro che metterci in salvo, ma torneremo poi con i nostri fratelli e combatteremo contro di loro; da soli siamo troppo pochi».	9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'
10 Giuda disse: «Non faremo mai una cosa simile: fuggire da loro! Se è giunta la nostra ora, moriamo da eroi per i nostri fratelli e non lasciamo ombra alla nostra gloria».	10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'
11 L’esercito nemico uscì dal campo, schierandosi contro i Giudei: la cavalleria si divise in due ali e i frombolieri e gli arcieri precedevano lo schieramento; i più validi erano tutti in prima fila e Bàcchide stava all’ala destra.	11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;
12 La falange si mosse avanzando ai due lati, al suono delle trombe; anche dalla parte di Giuda si diede fiato alle trombe.	12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,
13 La terra fu scossa dal fragore degli eserciti. Si scatenò la battaglia che durò dal mattino fino a sera.	13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.
14 Giuda notò che Bàcchide e la parte più forte dell’esercito erano a destra: allora si unirono a lui tutti i più coraggiosi	14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,
15 e fu travolta l’ala destra dal loro urto ed egli la inseguì fino al monte di Azoto.	15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.
16 Ma quelli dell’ala sinistra, vedendo che era stata sconfitta l’ala destra, si volsero sugli stessi passi di Giuda e dei suoi uomini assalendoli alle spalle.	16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.
17 Così si accese la battaglia e caddero molti feriti a morte, da una parte e dall’altra;	17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.
18 cadde anche Giuda e gli altri fuggirono.	18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.
19 Giònata e Simone raccolsero Giuda, loro fratello, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri, a Modin.	19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.
20 Tutto Israele lo pianse: furono in gran lutto e fecero lamenti per molti giorni, esclamando:	20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.
21 «Come è potuto cadere l’eroe che salvava Israele?».	21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'
22 Il resto delle imprese di Giuda e delle battaglie, degli eroismi di cui diede prova e dei suoi titoli di gloria non è stato scritto, perché troppo grande era il loro numero.	22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.
23 Dopo la morte di Giuda riapparvero gli iniqui in tutto il territorio d’Israele e risorsero tutti gli operatori d’ingiustizia.	23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.
24 In quei giorni sopravvenne una terribile carestia e gli stessi abitanti della regione passarono dalla loro parte.	24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.
25 Bàcchide scelse uomini rinnegati e li fece padroni della regione.	25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.
26 Si diedero a ricercare e braccare gli amici di Giuda e li conducevano da Bàcchide, che si vendicava di loro e li scherniva.	26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.
27 Ci fu grande tribolazione in Israele, come non si verificava dal giorno in cui non era più apparso un profeta in mezzo a loro.	27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.
28 Allora tutti gli amici di Giuda si radunarono e dissero a Giònata:	28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,
29 «Da quando è morto tuo fratello Giuda, non c’è uomo simile a lui per condurre l’azione contro i nemici e Bàcchide, e contro gli avversari della nostra nazione.	29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.
30 Ora noi oggi eleggiamo te nostro capo e condottiero al suo posto, per combattere le nostre battaglie».	30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'
31 Giònata assunse il comando in quella occasione e prese il posto di Giuda, suo fratello.	31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.
32 Bàcchide, avutane notizia, cercava di ucciderlo.	32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.
33 Ma Giònata e Simone, suo fratello, con tutti i loro seguaci, lo seppero e fuggirono nel deserto di Tekòa e si accamparono presso la cisterna di Asfar.	33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.
34 Bàcchide però lo venne a sapere in giorno di sabato e si portò anche lui con tutto il suo esercito al di là del Giordano.	34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)
35 Giònata inviò suo fratello, capo della turba, a chiedere ai Nabatei, suoi amici, di poter deporre presso di loro i propri equipaggiamenti, che erano abbondanti.	35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.
36 Ma i figli di Iambrì, che abitavano a Màdaba, fecero una razzia e catturarono Giovanni con tutte le cose che aveva e portarono via tutto.	36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.
37 Dopo questo fatto riferirono a Giònata e a Simone, suo fratello: «I figli di Iambrì celebrano una grande festa di nozze e da Nadabàt conducono la sposa, figlia di uno dei grandi magnati di Canaan, con corteo solenne».	37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.
38 Si ricordarono allora del sangue del loro fratello Giovanni, perciò si mossero e si appostarono in un antro del monte.	38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.
39 Ed ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro un corteo numeroso e festante e lo sposo con gli amici e i fratelli, che avanzava incontro al corteo, con tamburelli e strumenti musicali e grande apparato.	39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.
40 Balzando sopra di loro dall’appostamento in cui si trovavano, li trucidarono; molti caddero colpiti a morte mentre gli altri ripararono sul monte, ed essi presero le loro spoglie.	40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.
41 Le nozze furono mutate in lutto e i suoni delle loro musiche in lamento.	41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.
42 Così vendicarono il sangue del loro fratello e ritornarono nelle paludi del Giordano.	42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.
43 Bàcchide ne ebbe notizia e venne in giorno di sabato fin sulle sponde del Giordano con un numeroso esercito.	43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.
44 Giònata disse ai suoi: «Alziamoci e combattiamo per la nostra vita, perché oggi non è come ieri e l’altro ieri.	44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.
45 Ecco, abbiamo i nemici di fronte a noi e alle spalle, dall’uno e dall’altro lato abbiamo l’acqua del Giordano, la palude e la boscaglia: non c’è possibilità di scampo.	45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.
46 Alzate perciò ora le vostre grida al Cielo, perché possiate salvarvi dalla mano dei vostri nemici».	46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'
47 E si attaccò battaglia. Giònata stese la mano per colpire Bàcchide, ma questi lo scansò e si tirò indietro.	47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,
48 Allora Giònata e i suoi uomini si gettarono nel Giordano e raggiunsero a nuoto l’altra sponda; ma gli altri non passarono il Giordano per inseguirli.	48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.
49 Dalla parte di Bàcchide caddero in quella giornata circa mille uomini.	49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.
50 Bàcchide poi tornò a Gerusalemme ed edificò fortezze in tutta la Giudea: le fortezze di Gerico, Èmmaus, Bet-Oron, Betel, Tamnata, Piratòn e Tefon, con mura alte, porte e sbarre, e	50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,
51 vi pose un presidio per molestare Israele.	51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.
52 Fortificò anche la città di Bet-Sur, Ghezer e la Cittadella e vi stabilì milizie e vettovaglie.	52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.
53 Prese come ostaggi i figli dei capi della regione e li pose come prigionieri nella Cittadella a Gerusalemme.	53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.
54 Nell’anno centocinquantatré, nel secondo mese, Àlcimo ordinò di demolire il muro del cortile interno del santuario; distrusse così l’opera dei profeti. Si incominciò dunque a demolire.	54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition
55 Ma in quel tempo Àlcimo ebbe un grave malore e la sua opera fu interrotta. La sua bocca rimase impedita e paralizzata, e non poteva più parlare né dare disposizioni per la sua casa.	55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;
56 Àlcimo morì in quel tempo con grande tormento.	56 it was not long before he died in great agony.
57 Bàcchide, vedendo che Àlcimo era morto, se ne tornò presso il re, e la Giudea rimase tranquilla per due anni.	57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.
58 Tutti gli iniqui tennero questo consiglio: «Ecco, Giònata e i suoi vivono tranquilli e sicuri. Noi dunque faremo venire Bàcchide, che li catturerà tutti in una sola notte».	58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'
59 Andarono e tennero consiglio da lui.	59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.
60 Egli si mosse per venire con un esercito numeroso e mandò di nascosto lettere a tutti i suoi fautori nella Giudea, perché s’impadronissero di Giònata e dei suoi. Ma non vi riuscirono, perché era stata svelata la loro trama.	60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,
61 Anzi, questi presero una cinquantina di uomini, tra i promotori di tale scelleratezza nel paese, e li misero a morte.	61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.
62 Poi Giònata e Simone con i loro uomini si ritirarono a Bet-Basì nel deserto, ricostruirono le sue rovine e la fortificarono.	62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.
63 Lo seppe Bàcchide; radunò la sua gente e avvisò quelli della Giudea.	63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.
64 Quindi andò ad accamparsi presso Bet-Basì e l’attaccò per molti giorni allestendo anche macchine.	64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.
65 Giònata lasciò Simone, suo fratello, nella città e uscì nella regione, percorrendola con un drappello di armati.	65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.
66 Batté Odomerà con i suoi fratelli e i figli di Fasiròn nel loro attendamento. Cominciarono così a battersi e aumentarono di forze.	66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.
67 Simone, a sua volta, e i suoi fecero una sortita dalla città e incendiarono le macchine.	67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.
68 Poi attaccarono Bàcchide, che fu da loro sconfitto, e lo posero in grande angustia, perché il suo piano e la sua impresa erano andati a vuoto.	68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,
69 Si rivolse con rabbia contro quegli iniqui, che l’avevano consigliato di venire in quella regione, e ne mandò a morte molti; poi decise di ritornare nella sua terra.	69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.
70 Giònata lo seppe e gli mandò messaggeri per concludere la pace e scambiare i prigionieri.	70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.
71 Quegli accettò e fece secondo le sue proposte, giurandogli che non gli avrebbe recato alcun male per il resto dei suoi giorni;	71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.
72 gli restituì i prigionieri che prima aveva catturato nella Giudea e, messosi sulla via del ritorno, se ne andò nella sua terra e non volle più tornare nel loro territorio.	72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.
73 Così si riposò la spada in Israele. Giònata si stabilì a Micmas. Incominciò a governare il popolo e fece sparire i rinnegati da Israele.	73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.
