1 Ogni amico dice: "Anch'io ti sono amico", ma esiste l'amico che lo è solo di nome.	1 Every friend will say, "I too am a friend"; but some friends are friends only in name.
2 Non è forse un dolore mortale un compagno e un amico trasformatosi in nemico?	2 Is it not a grief to the death when a companion and friend turns to enmity?
3 O inclinazione malvagia, da dove sei balzata, per ricoprire la terra con la tua malizia?	3 O evil imagination, why were you formed to cover the land with deceit?
4 Il compagno si rallegra con l'amico nella felicità, ma al momento della disgrazia gli sarà ostile.	4 Some companions rejoice in the happiness of a friend, but in time of trouble are against him.
5 Il compagno soffre con l'amico per ragioni di stomaco, ma di fronte al conflitto prenderà lo scudo.	5 Some companions help a friend for their stomach's sake, and in the face of battle take up the shield.
6 Non ti dimenticare dell'amico dell'anima tua, non scordarti di lui nella tua prosperità.	6 Do not forget a friend in your heart, and be not unmindful of him in your wealth.
7 Ogni consigliere suggerisce consigli, ma c'è chi consiglia a proprio vantaggio.	7 Every counselor praises counsel, but some give counsel in their own interest.
8 Guàrdati da un consigliere, infòrmati quali siano le sue necessità - egli nel consigliare penserà al suo interesse - perché non getti la sorte su di te	8 Be wary of a counselor, and learn first what is his interest-- for he will take thought for himself-- lest he cast the lot against you
9 e dica: "La tua via è buona", poi si terrà in disparte per vedere quanto ti accadrà.	9 and tell you, "Your way is good," and then stand aloof to see what will happen to you.
10 Non consigliarti con chi ti guarda di sbieco, nascondi la tua intenzione a quanti ti invidiano.	10 Do not consult the one who looks at you suspiciously; hide your counsel from those who are jealous of you.
11 Non consigliarti con una donna sulla sua rivale, con un pauroso sulla guerra, con un mercante sul commercio, con un compratore sulla vendita, con un invidioso sulla riconoscenza, con uno spietato sulla bontà di cuore, con un pigro su un'iniziativa qualsiasi, con un mercenario annuale sul raccolto, con uno schiavo pigro su un gran lavoro; non dipendere da costoro per nessun consiglio.	11 Do not consult with a woman about her rival or with a coward about war, with a merchant about barter or with a buyer about selling, with a grudging man about gratitude or with a merciless man about kindness, with an idler about any work or with a man hired for a year about completing his work, with a lazy servant about a big task-- pay no attention to these in any matter of counsel.
12 Invece frequenta spesso un uomo pio, che tu conosci come osservante dei comandamenti e la cui anima è come la tua anima; se tu inciampi, saprà compatirti.	12 But stay constantly with a godly man whom you know to be a keeper of the commandments, whose soul is in accord with your soul, and who will sorrow with you if you fail.
13 Segui il consiglio del tuo cuore, perché nessuno ti sarà più fedele di lui.	13 And establish the counsel of your own heart, for no one is more faithful to you than it is.
14 La coscienza di un uomo talvolta suole avvertire meglio di sette sentinelle collocate in alto per spiare.	14 For a man's soul sometimes keeps him better informed than seven watchmen sitting high on a watchtower.
15 Al di sopra di tutto questo prega l'Altissimo perché guidi la tua condotta secondo verità.	15 And besides all this pray to the Most High that he may direct your way in truth.
16 Principio di ogni opera è la ragione, prima di ogni azione è bene riflettere.	16 Reason is the beginning of every work, and counsel precedes every undertaking.
17 Radice dei pensieri è il cuore, queste quattro parti ne derivano:	17 As a clue to changes of heart
18 bene e male, vita e morte, ma su tutto domina sempre la lingua.	18 four turns of fortune appear, good and evil, life and death; and it is the tongue that continually rules them.
19 C'è l'uomo esperto maestro di molti, ma inutile per se stesso.	19 A man may be shrewd and the teacher of many, and yet be unprofitable to himself.
20 C'è chi posa a saggio nei discorsi ed è odioso, a costui mancherà ogni nutrimento;	20 A man skilled in words may be hated; he will be destitute of all food,
21 non gli è stato concesso il favore del Signore, poiché è privo di ogni sapienza.	21 for grace was not given him by the Lord, since he is lacking in all wisdom.
22 C'è chi è saggio solo per se stesso, i frutti della sua scienza sono sicuri.	22 A man may be wise to his own advantage, and the fruits of his understanding may be trustworthy on his lips.
23 Un uomo saggio istruisce il suo popolo, dei frutti della sua intelligenza ci si può fidare.	23 A wise man will instruct his own people, and the fruits of his understanding will be trustworthy.
24 Un uomo saggio è colmato di benedizioni, quanti lo vedono lo proclamano beato.	24 A wise man will have praise heaped upon him, and all who see him will call him happy.
25 La vita dell'uomo ha i giorni contati; ma i giorni di Israele sono senza numero.	25 The life of a man is numbered by days, but the days of Israel are without number.
26 Il saggio otterrà fiducia tra il suo popolo, il suo nome vivrà per sempre.	26 He who is wise among his people will inherit confidence, and his name will live for ever.
27 Figlio, nella tua vita prova te stesso, vedi quanto ti nuoce e non concedertelo.	27 My son, test your soul while you live; see what is bad for it and do not give it that.
28 Difatti non tutto conviene a tutti e non tutti approvano ogni cosa.	28 For not everything is good for every one, and not every person enjoys everything.
29 Non essere ingordo per qualsiasi ghiottoneria, non ti gettare sulle vivande,	29 Do not have an insatiable appetite for any luxury, and do not give yourself up to food;
30 perché l'abuso dei cibi causa malattie, l'ingordigia provoca coliche. Molti sono morti per ingordigia, chi si controlla vivrà a lungo.	30 for overeating brings sickness, and gluttony leads to nausea.
	31 Many have died of gluttony, but he who is careful to avoid it prolongs his life.
