| 3 Proprio di lui era stato detto per mezzo del profeta Isaia: Voce d'uno che grida nel deserto: preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i suoi sentieri. | 3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'" |
| 4 Giovanni aveva un vestito di peli di cammello e una cintura di pelle intorno ai fianchi; e si nutriva di cavallette e di miele selvatico. | 4 John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. |
| 5 Allora accorrevano a lui Gerusalemme e tutta la Giudea e tutta la regione intorno al Giordano; | 5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him |
| 6 ed eran battezzati da lui nel fiume Giordano, mentre confessavano i loro peccati. | 6 and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. |
| 7 Veduti poi molti farisei e sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: « Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a sfuggire all’ira che sta per venire? | 7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? |
| 8 Fate, dunque, un frutto degno della penitenza, | 8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. |
| 9 e non crediate di poter dire dentro di voi: “ Noi abbiamo per ‘pacze Abramo ”, perchè io vi dico che Dio può da queste pietre far sorgere figli ad Abramo. | 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. |
| 10 Già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi: ogni albero, dunque, che non fa buon frutto si taglia e si getta al fuoco. | 10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. |
| 11 Io vi battezzo in acqua per la penitenza, ma colui che viene dopo di me è più potente di me; a lui io non sono degno di portare i sandali. Egli vi battezzerà in Spirito Santo e fuoco: | 11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire. |
| 12 nella sua mano tiene il ventilabro e purgherà la sua aia, e raccoglierà il suo grano nel granaio; brucerà, invece, la pula con un fuoco inestinguibile ». | 12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." |
| 13 Allora Gesù si reca dalla Galilea al Giordano da Giovanni per essere da lui battezzato. | 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. |
| 14 Giovanni, però, cercava di distoglierlo dicendo: « Sono io che ho bisogno di essere battezzato da te, e tu vieni a me?». | 14 John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" |
| 15 Ma, rispondendo, Gesù gli disse: « Lascia, adesso, così; infatti, ci conviene compiere ogni giustizia ». Allora lo lascia fare. | 15 Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. |
| 16 Subito dopo il battesimo, Gesù uscì dall’acqua; ed ecco che i cieli si apersero per lui, ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio discendere, come una colomba, e venire su di lui. | 16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. |
| 17 Ed ecco una voce dai cieli che diceva: « Questi è il mio Figlio diletto, nel quale mi son compiaciuto ». | 17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." |
