| 1 Chiamati a sè i suoi dodici discepoli, diede loro il potere di scacciare gli spiriti immondi e di guarire ogni malattia ed infermità. | 1 And having called together his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to cure every sickness and every infirmity. |
| 2 I nomi dei dodici apostoli sono questi: primo, Simone detto Pietro, e Andrea suo fratello; Giacomo di Zebedeo e Giovanni suo fratello; | 2 Now the names of the twelve Apostles are these: the First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, |
| 3 Filippo e Bartolomeo; Tommaso e Matteo il pubblicano; Giacomo di Alfeo e Taddeo; | 3 James of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, and James of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, |
| 4 Simone il Cananeo e Giuda l’Iscariota, quello appunto che lo tradì. | 4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. |
| 5 Questi dodici Gesù inviò dopo aver loro dato le seguenti istruzioni: « Non prendete la via dei pagani e non entrate in una città di Samaritani. | 5 Jesus sent these twelve, instructing them, saying: “Do not travel by the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into the city of the Samaritans, |
| 6 Andate piuttosto alle pecore perdute della casa d’Israele. | 6 but instead go to the sheep who have fallen away from the house of Israel. |
| 7 Nel vostro cammino, poi, predicate dicendo: “ È vicino il regno dei cieli”. | 7 And going forth, preach, saying: ‘For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.’ |
| 8 Sanate infermi, risuscitate morti, mondate lebbrosi, scacciate demoni. Gratuitamente avete ricevuto, gratuitamente date. | 8 Cure the infirm, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You have received freely, so give freely. |
| 9 Non vi procurate oro, nè argento, nè rame per le vostre cinture, | 9 Do not choose to possess gold, nor silver, nor money in your belts, |
| 10 nè bisaccia da viaggio, nè due tuniche, nè sandali, nè bastone; perchè l’operaio ha diritto al suo nutrimento. | 10 nor provisions for the journey, nor two tunics, nor shoes, nor a staff. For the laborer deserves his portion. |
| 11 In qualunque città o borgata voi entriate, cercate in essa chi è degno e là restate fino alla vostra partenza. | 11 Now, into whatever city or town you will enter, inquire as to who is worthy within it. And stay there until you depart. |
| 12 Entrando nella casa, salutatela; | 12 Then, when you enter into the house, greet it, saying, ‘Peace to this house.’ |
| 13 e se la casa ne è degna, la vostra pace venga su di essa; se, invece, non è degna, la vostra pace a voi ritorni. | 13 And if, indeed, that house is worthy, your peace will rest upon it. But if it is not worthy, your peace will return to you. |
| 14 E se qualcuno non vi accoglie o non ascolta le vostre parole, uscite da quella casa o città scuotendo la polvere dai vostri piedi. | 14 And whoever has neither received you, nor listened to your words, departing from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. |
| 15 In verità vi dico: nel giorno del giudizio, la terra di Sodoma e Gomorra avrà una sorte più sopportabile che quella città. | 15 Amen I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city. |
| 16 Ecco, io vi mando come pecore in mezzo ai lupi; siate, dunque, prudenti come i serpenti e candidi come le colombe. | 16 Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be as prudent as serpents and as simple as doves. |
| 17 Guardatevi poi dagli uomini, perchè vi denunzieranno ai sinedri e vi flagelleranno nelle loro sinagoghe, | 17 But beware of men. For they will hand you over to councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. |
| 18 e sarete tradotti dinanzi a governatori e re per causa mia, per dar testimonianza ad essi e ai pagani. | 18 And you shall be led before both rulers and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. |
| 19 Quando, poi, vi avranno tradotti dinanzi a loro, non vi preoccupate del come e di ciò che dovrete dire; poichè vi sarà dato in quell’ora ciò che dovrete dire. | 19 But when they hand you over, do not choose to think about how or what to speak. For what to speak shall be given to you in that hour. |
| 20 Non siete voi, infatti, che parlate, ma lo Spirito del Padre vostro che parla in voi. | 20 For it is not you who will be speaking, but the Spirit of your Father, who will speak in you. |
| 21 Il fratello tradirà il fratello a morte, e il padre il figlio, e i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li faranno morire. | 21 And brother will hand over brother to death, and father will hand over son. And children will rise up against parents and bring about their deaths. |
| 22 È voi sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome, ma chi: avrà sopportato’ fino alla fine, questi sarà salvato. | 22 And you will be hated by all for the sake of my name. But whoever will have persevered, even to the end, the same shall be saved. |
| 23 Quando vi perseguiteranno in una città, fuggite in un’altra; perchè in verità vi dico: non avrete finito le città di Israele che il Figlio dell’uomo sarà venuto. | 23 Now when they persecute you in one city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you will not have exhausted all the cities of Israel, before the Son of man returns. |
| 24 Il discepolo non è da più del suo maestro, nè il servo da più del suo padrone. | 24 The disciple is not above the teacher, nor is the servant above his master. |
| 25 Il discepolo si contenti di essere come il maestro, e il servo di essere come il suo padrone. Se hanno chiamato Beelzebul il padrone di casa, quanto più chiameranno così i suoi familiari! | 25 It is sufficient for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant, like his master. If they have called the Father of the family, ‘Beelzebub,’ how much more those of his household? |
| 26 Non temeteli, dunque, perchè non c’è nulla di coperto che non sarà svelato, e nulla di nascosto che non sarà conosciuto. | 26 Therefore, do not fear them. For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed, nor hidden that shall not be known. |
| 27 Ciò che vi dico nella tenebra ditelo nella luce, e quel che udite all’orecchio predicatelo sui tetti. | 27 What I tell you in darkness, speak in the light. And what you hear whispered in the ear, preach above the rooftops. |
| 28 E non temete coloro che uccidono: il corpo ma non possono uccidere l’anima. Temete, piuttosto, colui che può far perire e anima e corpo nella Geenna. | 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. But instead fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell. |
| 29 Due passeri non si vendono forse per un asse? E non uno di essi cade a terra senza la permissione del Padre vostro. | 29 Are not two sparrows sold for one small coin? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father. |
| 30 Quanto a voi, anche i capelli del vostro capo son numerati. | 30 For even the hairs of your head have all been numbered. |
| 31 Non temete, dunque; voi valete ben più di molti passeri. | 31 Therefore, do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows. |
| 32 Chiunque si dichiarerà per me dinanzi agli uomini, anche io mi dichiarerò per lui dinanzi al Padre mio che è nei cieli; | 32 Therefore, everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father, who is in heaven. |
| 33 chiunque, invece, mi avrà rinnegato dinanzi agli uomini, anch'io lo rinnegherò dinanzi al Padre mio che è nei cieli. | 33 But whoever will have denied me before men, I also will deny before my Father, who is in heaven. |
| 34 Non crediate che io sia venuto a metter pace sulla terra; non son venuto a metter pace ma spada. | 34 Do not think that I came to send peace upon the earth. I came, not to send peace, but the sword. |
| 35 Son venuto, infatti, a metter divisione: l’uomo contro, suo padre, e la figlia contro sua madre, e la nuora contro sua suocera, | 35 For I came to divide a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. |
| 36 e nemici dell’uomo saran quelli della sua casa. | 36 And the enemies of a man will be those of his own household. |
| 37 Chi ama il padre e la madre più di me non è degno di me; chi ama suo figlio o sua figlia più di me non è degno di me; | 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever loves son or daughter above me is not worthy of me. |
| 38 e chi non prende la sua croce e mi segue non è degno di me. | 38 And whoever does not take up his cross, and follow me is not worthy of me. |
| 39 Chi avrà trovato la sua vita la perderà, e chi avrà perduto la sua vita per causa mia la troverà. | 39 Whoever finds his life, will lose it. And whoever will have lost his life because of me, shall find it. |
| 40 Chi accoglie voi accoglie me, e chi accoglie me accoglie colui che mi ha mandato. | 40 Whoever receives you, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. |
| 41 Chi accoglie un profeta nella sua qualità di profeta riceverà ricompensa di profeta; e chi accoglie un giusto nelle sua qualità di giusto, riceverà ricompensa di giusto. | 41 Whoever receives a prophet, in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet. And whoever receives the just in the name of the just shall receive the reward of the just. |
| 42 E chiunque darà a bere ad uno di questi piccoli nella loro qualità di discepoli, anche solo un bicchiere d’acqua fresca, in verità vi dico: non perderà la sua ricompensa ». | 42 And whoever shall give, even to one of the least of these, a cup of cold water to drink, solely in the name of a disciple: Amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” |
