1 Wer seinen Sohn liebt, hält den Stock für ihn bereit, damit er später Freude erleben kann.	1 He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours.
2 Wer seinen Sohn in Zucht hält, wird Freude an ihm haben und kann sich bei Bekannten seiner rühmen.	2 He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household.
3 Wer seinen Sohn unterweist, erweckt den Neid des Feindes, bei seinen Freunden kann er auf ihn stolz sein.	3 He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him.
4 Stirbt der Vater, so ist es, als wäre er nicht tot; denn er hat sein Abbild hinterlassen.	4 His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself.
5 Solange er lebt, sieht er ihn und freut sich, wenn er stirbt, ist er nicht betrübt:	5 While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies.
6 Er hat seinen Feinden einen Rächer hinterlassen und seinen Freunden einen, der ihnen dankbar ist.	6 For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends.
7 Wer den Sohn verzärtelt, muss ihm einst die Wunden verbinden; dann zittert bei jedem Aufschrei sein Herz.	7 For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled.
8 Ein ungebändigtes Pferd wird störrisch, ein zügelloser Sohn wird unberechenbar.

10 Lach nicht mit ihm, sonst bekommst du Kummer und beißt dir am Ende die Zähne aus.	10 Give thy son his way, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he shall make thee sorrowful.
11 Lass ihn nicht den Herrn spielen in der Jugend; lass dir seine Bosheiten nicht gefallen!	11 Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow, and at the last thy teeth be set on edge.
12 Beug ihm den Kopf in Kindestagen; schlag ihn aufs Gesäß, solange er noch klein ist,sonst wird er störrisch und widerspenstig gegen dich und du hast Kummer mit ihm.	12 Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices.
13 Halte deinen Sohn in Zucht und mach ihm das Joch schwer, sonst überhebt er sich gegen dich in seiner Torheit.	13 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee.
14 Besser arm und gesunde Glieder als reich und mit Krankheit geschlagen.	14 Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee.
15 Ein Leben in Gesundheit ist mir lieber als Gold, ein frohes Herz lieber als Perlen.	15 Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils.
16 Kein Reichtum geht über den Reichtum gesunder Glieder, kein Gut über die Freude des Herzens.	16 Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues.
17 Besser sterben als ein unnützes Leben, besser Ruhe für immer als dauerndes Leid.	17 There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart.
18 Leckerbissen, einem verschlossenen Mund dargereicht, sind wie Opfergaben, die man vor ein Götzenbild hinstellt;	18 Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness.
19 was nützen sie den Götzen der Heiden, die nicht essen und nicht riechen können? Ihnen gleicht einer, der Reichtum besitzt, ihn aber nicht genießen kann.	19 Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave.
20 Mit den Augen erblickt er ihn und seufzt wie ein Entmannter, der ein Mädchen umarmt.	20 What good shall an offering do to an idol? for it can neither eat, nor smell:
21 Überlass dich nicht der Sorge, schade dir nicht selbst durch dein Grübeln!	21 So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity:
22 Herzensfreude ist Leben für den Menschen, Frohsinn verlängert ihm die Tage.	22 He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing.
23 Überrede dich selbst und beschwichtige dein Herz, halte Verdruss von dir fern! Denn viele tötet die Sorge und Verdruss hat keinen Wert.	23 Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel.
24 Neid und Ärger verkürzen das Leben, Kummer macht vorzeitig alt.	24 The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life.
25 Der Schlaf des Fröhlichen wirkt wie eine Mahlzeit, das Essen schlägt gut bei ihm an.	25 Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee.
	26 For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it.
	27 Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time.
